In the days before BBSes, we had this book: which was a catalog of shareware floppy disks, and then I guess dad sent off a form to them and they posted back some floppies like this in exchange for a nominal fee: I probably have a bunch of these somewhere including the game Willy the Worm, did anyone else play that? It was a platformer, but it was monochrome with pretty basic graphics, but I think it was fun.

I also hacked LIST itself because it didn't want you to be able to view stuff on network drives unless you registered it, but it was pretty easy to find the "is this a network drive" check in the disassembly in McAfee ProView and NOP it out. I was a kid with no money at the time, and I can't make up for my crime by registering it now because the guy who wrote it died a few years ago

GTA 3 was my first real first foray into modding. You could use a hex editor to change some of the text in the world. You could also use notepad to edit the map.

I would guess that a large number of people were first introduced to modding/hex editing through Game Genie. When i first realized what it was actually doing and was able to modify stock codes myself (IIRC my first 2 were figuring out how to change the X value for both the "start with X lives" and "jump X height" codes for Super Mario Bros.) RPGs are great fodder for Game Genie/hex edits; I remember doing some pretty absurd stuff in Final Fantasy VI (beyond just stat mods/items, crazy poo poo like changing encounter rates, character sprites, etc.) There was a Final Fantasy Tactics save editor too, and the game simply did not know how to react when you put the final boss of the game in your party for the first mission (mostly because that boss takes up several spaces on the battlefield instead of just 1 like all other characters). Messing around with that editor made me appreciate the time that went into the game, since 90% of the enemy characters are fully playable when modded into your party, with unique jobs, abilities, dialogue, etc. I know the nature of the game meant that those things had to be programmed in anyway, but it was still kind of cool.

My first (and I think to this day only?) use of hex editing was for Eye of the Beholder 2. I had the game in the mid/late 90's, but got very stuck. I tried to find a guide online (good lord was searching lovely back then...) and I dsid find one, but it was terrible. It glossed over HUGE parts. It was like 1) From the starting forest, go into the castle. 2) From there, go down to the basement. Get the 4 horns. 3) Once you're in the Slime Level, do XYZ. Well, where the gently caress was the entrance to the Slime level!? I never did find that...probably some secret door I never found. But I did find a guide to using a hex editor to change the items in your inventory, so I gave myself the keys I needed, but it only worked so much. At some point, it invariably got messed up and switched a lot of my items over to some garbage items, including ones I never edited in the first place. Edit: Ha, no lie, I think this was the exact walkthrough I was trying to use in high school: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/564792-eye-of-the-beholder-ii-the-legend-of-darkmoon/faqs/2002

Combat is tough. Talon's tongue : You'll find it soon or later. Portal : This is near the Talon's tongue. Use the stone dagger to get out of this level. Pits : Watch carefully. If you fall, you'll be a few level down.

I didn't have a Game Genie or anything like that but on my PC I used this program with the highly creative name "gametools", which was a TSR that let you search RAM to find a value that had gone up or down since the last time you popped it up, so you could find out where health or ammo was stored: I didn't always manage to achieve what I wanted but it did work for me sometimes!
