Maxie Zeus, as long as you don't mess up and imply that he's not a God, is going to be a pretty chill boss. Black Mask is definitely out, as is Joker, Zsasz or any of the serial killer guys. Poison Ivy might be alright if you were a woman. Harley has that Gang of Harleys now, they seem to be doing alright.

Scarecrow is definitely going to test new kinds of gas on you. That's a given. Riddler would probably be the best balance of a high profile name and least likely to murder you.

Riddler would have the risk of him deciding to totally screw up a job because he had to give Batman a fair chance to solve a riddle to stop him. Like you can't just in and out rob a bank in 30 seconds, you have to set up elaborate traps and pray the world's greatest detective can't solve Riddler's riddle.

Calendarman would be okay but he'll have you working holidays all the time.

Selina recently took over the mob to stop a violent gang war. I think she'd be pretty good to work for especially if Batman maybe goes easy on you because he's schtupping the Don.

Clayface seems like a decent bet since you could just hang out in public while Clayface commits crimes looking like you. You'd get paid for simply being an alibi.

I think Anarky would be a pretty cool boss. He's not violently crazy, he's ideologically focused on benefiting the proletariat so he's going to look after you and not sacrifice you for a goal, and he's probably open to byocostume.

Depends on the version of Anarky. I haven't read much with Anarky but I remember reading that his creator, Alan Grant became a free-market fetishist (Libertarian) and so Anarky also turned into one, while earlier he was more of a leftist anarchist-socialist. The former would be unbearable, the latter would be the best option.

Earth 2 Anarky from what I've seen of him is decent.

You would also get a lot of extra holidays to make up for the ones you lose working, in that you'd get to take off any day that doesn't have a major holiday Calendarman is trying to do something on. So I'd say even if he paid retail you might still end up with more vacation days :v:.

That Penguin mini-series from the start of the New 52 shows that he's the sort of boss that if you accidentally bump into him (literally) in his club, even if you apologize profusely for the error he will still hack into computers to frame you as an embezzler and child pornographer and then commit arson to your apartment building to burn your family and friends alive and cut your parents' brakes so they drive off of a cliff and die and have someone stab your little sister with an AIDS infected needle. Because you bumped into him and may have apologized, but he still doesn't appreciate being bumped into.

I don't know if this is an indictment on working for the Penguin or for the New 52.

Penguin Pain & Prejudice by Gregg Hurwitz. I got the "child porn" part wrong, but everything else was in this book. I think the "planting child porn" thing was from some other 'he's not a crazy person, but IF U CROSS HIM...' story about Kingpin or Lex Luthor or someone else where the writer doesn't seem to understand that no, if a criminal mastermind just punches their underling in the face for a minor screw-up they're like 100% less psychotic than the one who spends a full workweek ruining the lives of everyone the underling knows, even if they're not "a violent person".

That was from a one-shot by Jason Aaron and Jason Pearson a few years before the mini-series. I totally thought it was from that Hurwitz mini too until double-checking a second ago but I guess they were just very similar stories.

The Aaron story was subtle in that take on Penguin as being completely unbalanced in his own way despite outwardly being a rather sane mob boss, but Hurwitz made it fairly caricatural.
