I've always found it kind of strange for bands to be "inspired" by other bands who are still relevant and still honing their own sound. No offense to the poster above me or anything, but I feel like if you're just trying to emulate something that is new and cool, your creative endeavors will likely fail. Not to say that there isn't influence being taken from other sources, as well, it just seems odd to cite a very current, popular band as an influence.

I disagree. It's totally understandable to hear a band and think, "I really like their sound, but would like to put my own spin on it." Does this lead to a lot of carbon copies of bands? Yeah, definitely. But, typically, those bands never make it very far. The ones that take an existing sound and make it their own will usually evolve so much during their early years that, by the time anyone really hears about them, they'll have developed their own style.

I totally get what you mean, and definitely agree, although there are a shitload of different influences on the album that this is taken from (speaking reeasonably objectively as I didn't write any of it).

I say TAIM because at one point the track has a similar triplet chug breakdown to Shadow of Eternal Sin, which TAIM took from Decapitated, who probably got it from Slayer.

Stoked for a new album since I really enjoyed the EP and previous album. This new one is pretty dull, though. Disappointing :/

Orchid, Hourglass and the last 3 songs are all loving ace imo. Their best choruses by far, and also best production job (bass tone is audible! the soundscape isn't compressed!)

I don't much care for Sleeper or Drift, but man the rest just rips. I like the increased focus on melody and de-emphasis of djent parts - they're still there, the rhythm of Hourglass is very Meshuggah, but they're not the dominant thing.

I just feel like the entire album is very milquetoast. Nothing stands out. No really sweeping melodies or crushing breakdowns or anything. I'm not a huge fan of the dude who took over for Texas in July, either.

I absolutely love Moments of Clarity so this full length is a let down.

Listened to the 3 prerelease tracks that are up on Apple Music so far. Certainly enjoyable, but on the level a bit too airy/dreamlike/ambient/whatever for me. I don't care much for that hummy ethereal guitar tone, and I've never been a big fan of triggered drums either. I will say that I enjoyed the track "Scar Queen" a good deal more than the others and I think this band would be more exciting if they made more of their songs sound more like that.

Worth listening to though. I'll play the full album at least once through next week.

Before you start wearing their t-shirt around be sure to take note of what label they're on and make sure you're cool with advertising their beliefs. :haw: "Christian metal" is an amusing oxymoron though.

Christian lyrics have been a thing in metal since Black Sabbath and unless you're a member of the original Norwegian black metal scene or a huge fedora they shouldn't really bother you.

Yeah, I'm an atheist, but I regularly jam to some Christian (or Christian influenced) bands. August Burns Red, Haste the Day, The Chariot, etc. I mean, I probably listen to, at least, twice as many bands that poo poo on religion, but good tunes are good tunes, so gently caress it.

Oh no, they don't bother me, it's just interesting to see how the thematic makeup of metalcore is different from what most would consider "METAL."

And I will concede that power metal is not very devilish either, that is a good point.
