eu4 has never clicked for me like eu3 did. i feel like the combat results are way more erratic and unexpectedly punishing than their other games. ck2 and vic2 are way more fun, imo. not a fan of the hoi series, though i will buy 4 to check it out. stellaris has a lot of promise, but lacks bugfixes/depth.

but the holy grail of games for me would be something like civilization sporeiversalis: total war kings so...

Well thanks to that link for CK2 on sale for cheap I'm gonna go with it for now and pick up EU4 when it goes on sale and Stellaris when its had a little time to iron out the rough edges.

Any recommendations for must have DLC for CK2 or is the base game good enough that I should just wait till they go on sale?

The base game is pretty good but a few of the DLCs add a lot to the experience and are worth getting right away -

Must have:
-Way of Life: adds a bunch of flavour events, lets you pick a character focus to emphasize particular aspects of your rule.
-Conclave: significantly enhances the vassal management element, and even when playing as a vassal gives you a bunch of options to gently caress with your liege.

Optional but very good:
-Legacy of Rome: mainly for access to retinues, but also adds a bunch of stuff for the Byzantines like event chains and decisions to reform the Roman Empire.
-Old Gods: Allows you to play pagans, but even if you don't care about that also comes with an earlier start date.
-Sons of Abraham: Adds a bunch of extra stuff for Christians, especially Catholics, who you will probably spend a bit of time playing anyway.
-Charlemagne: Another even earlier start date, and a bunch of little things like viceroyalties or being able to create new kingdoms/empires if you're a big realm but don't meet the requirements for any de jure titles.

More Specialized, only get if you're interested:
-Horse Lords: allows you to play as nomads. Nomads are cool but you probably don't want to play them for your first game.
-The Republic: Allows you to play merchant republics. See the above comment about nomads.
-Sword of Islam: Allows you to play Muslims, but doesn't add anything for non-Muslims so only really worthwhile if you plan to play them specifically.
-Rajas of India: Ditto the above, except Indian religions instead of Muslims. It also gives you the ability to convert to the religion/culture of your capital, which is useful but not worth buying a whole DLC just for that.

The other stuff is all cosmetic so you can take it or leave it. I find the portrait packs are generally good but the unit packs are kind of pointless. There's also sunset invasion which adds a western equivalent to the Mongols - it balances the game out a bit but is also kind of a pain if you aren't prepared for it.

Koramei

I have three regrets
The first is to be born in Joseon.
Conclave is insanely divisive, I dunno if I would say it's necessary. And did they ever fix the thing everyone was complaining about from Way of Life? Some of the choices in that were meant to be broken I thought.

From my perspective it's a game where you're staring at portraits all day so the portrait packs are borderline necessary, they add an enormous amount of variety and it really makes the world feel bigger when not everyone outside of Europe looks Arab. The unit packs are a similar deal but if you're one of those players who just plays zoomed out all the time I can understand them not being so appealing.

It'd be nice to have a diary about (or at least some nice renders of) the 3D unit sprites? The other art diaries have all been interesting, and Paradox unit models have gotten really good looking in the days since vanilla EU3's block men.

EDIT: Also there's been so much discussion of counters it'd be nice to see the other side of the coin. :v:

They did show us Norway becoming a Socialist republic in one diary, and we saw the dumb Fascist USA flag in another, but yeah, an entire dev diary about how hosed up things can get would be cool.

Also, are the fascist flags made stupid by default so there's no incentive to actually become fascist ingame? Because holy hell a bundle of stick looks stupid.

Well, compared to the Communist/Socialist emblem, it's a lot harder to convey in a small image, ie, why the symbol takes up half the flag. Hell, Italy didn't even use it. It almost seems like each Fascist country used their own national symbol.

Easy on the name calling, Jesus Christ.
