Years ago I stumbled on some forum for ex-Mormons. I wish I'd bookmarked it, the stories people were telling were pretty interesting. Stuff like Stake Leaders pressuring them into tithing and calling it "fire-insurance" or how apparently Mormons will track you down the same way Scientologists do for the rest of your life. The people there said it was pretty common for the local Stake to get your information and send out a member with baked goods in an attempt to talk you back into the faith and the only way to stop this was to send a formal letter of resignation to the head list keeping office in Utah.

Anything like that ever happen to you or are those cases unique?

This has happened to me and my sister, they pressure my mom to give our current phone numbers so they can invite us to activities. The only way we've come to a peace is we've agreed not to resign if she gives them fake numbers. I would've resigned years ago but it would cause my mom to be mocked for being a failed parent, which for whatever reason would make her sad instead of realizing that this whole thing is bullshit

So do modern day Mormons actively talk about how Native Americans are actually Jewish people who canoed to America 2500 years ago and black people are angels who were conscientious objectors in the war in heaven, and Abraham wrote the Book of the Dead? Or is that stuff usually just ignored?

In my experience they don't talk about that stuff, but it isn't denied. If you specifically ask about crazy belief X the general response is 'That's a lot less important now, have we talked about this cool stuff we've done lately?" and if you keep pressing they'll eventually admit that yeah it's true. Generally that's when they'll gently caress off though, because you're not actually looking to convert and are being actively hostile etc.

No. Mormon temples are generally closed to the public, and they're known for having decorated, themed rooms that are used ceremonially, but as far as people report they're symbolic, and photo evidence suggests they're pretty underwhelming by modern standards.

I used to live right by their Celebrity Center here in Los Angeles doing a job that would sometimes let me out at 11 PM or later. I'd have to drive by the Center to get home.

You know how when someone is trying to cross the street they'll put one fut down in front of the curb as they wait for cars to pass? Well the Church owns the apartment buildings across the street from the Center, and the Center is always open (to Scientologists at least), so Scientologists would scurry back and forth at all hours. They looked like waiters without the apron they keep the order pad in.

Anyway, whenever I was driving down one of them would be trying to cross the street, doing that one foot off the curb thing, but unlike normal pedestrians they would stare at me. Like really intensely. It just stuck out and it felt so damned odd. Until after doing this for a few years I saw a documentary where Scientologists are taking classes sitting down at repurposed phone bank desks with an object placed before them. They'd give instructions to the object, telling it to move left, right, etc. before being instructed to thank the object for being whatever it was. After watching it I realized that those cultists were trying to use their mind powers to stop my car. So from then on I always sped up whenever I caught one trying to stare me down.

Just a few years ago the Church bribed the city into putting crosswalks and yield signs on the road between the Center and the apartments. I guess someone got run down or they realized that having a constant reminder that Thetan powers are bullshit wasn't a good idea.

Apparently non-believers are allowed to see those rooms, but only on the opening day of a new church. I remember hearing one was opening here some years back and they mentioned it on the news.

It's actually some masonic-knockoff ceremony poo poo symbolizing being together after death. Also outside the Temple there's a patriarchal blessing you can only have once, you get to find out which lost tribe of israel you are and get some steaming improv divine inspiration for your life.

The main LDS church gave up polygamy in the 1890s. The people who practice it today are fundamentalist offshoots. So even if that scene was based on something real, it wouldn't have anything to do with the main church.

Mormon Temples are real boring, even when they're doing all the fancy stuff.

Re: weird mormon doctrine. Mormonism got a ton more concerned about what the world thought about them in the 70's with L. Tom Perry. There was this giant temple building push in the 60's and 70's because the apocalypse WAS COMING and people needed their temple work and then the church nearly went bankrupt and welp.

They introduced this thing called correlation which basically streamlined a whole bunch of doctrine and gave the church its sort of seriously corporate feeling inside. The ultimate result was "unified" doctrine that looked a lot more "protestant." They still believe most of the wild bs, but its not talked about because of how wild it is.

This push has been amplified recently as well. Things like FARMS have been shut down and placed completely under the auspices of the much more mainline BYU studies publishing. All the weird mormon doctrinal stuff comes out of Signature Press and Kofford books these days, and those are both not really church sanctioned.

Probably.

There's some question internally about Lorenzo Snow's famous statement: "As man now is, God once was; as God now is, man may be" and the first presidency has generally shied away from making direct proclamations about that sort of thing. Hinckley suggested that Snow was wrong about the whole God being like man thing, but didn't really take too much aim at the other part. Progression theology is pretty important to Mormon christology.
