I loved startropics when I was a kid. I never finished the game because there is a part where you need a code in the physical game manual to move forward, but we had lost it. my siblings and I loved the game so much that we would just consider that the end and just start over haha. Thinking about it now, maybe that was the world's first DRM.

I still want a picture of a map that social justice warriors would use that says BIGOTRY in the middle with a bunch of little army cubes on the sides so the leader can point to it and declare, "We're attacking at dawn!"

This is actually how a lot of games back then fought pirating. I know a ton of games would say "What is the Xth word on Yth page of the instruction booklet" And, a lot of D and D games had these decoder rings you had to manipulate to figure out what text you needed to enter to play the game, since you could just copy a manual.

Here's one deconstructed, but I think I still have mine somewhere. You'd have to align two of the symbols together and you'd get a code and that would be the code you needed that time to play the game. It was always a different pairing of symbols:

Also, I had this Ninja Turtles game, and in that one, you had these giant pages of codes and the game would ask you to put in a certain code to play the game. The codes were on an 80x8 grid that spanned two pages and each time you wanted to play it, it would give you the coordinates and you'd have to find the right code.
