Looking back at that frame-by-frame*, it looks like he didn't actually collide with the explosive barrel when it detonated. This also isn't a case of anything about hitboxes, because DS2 apparently had unusually tight hitboxes unlike its contemporaries. (I'm of the opinion that the difference is basically just Something Different to Get Used To and thus neither bad nor good, but we can table that.) Anyway, my evidence for such is that by the same frame-by-frame analysis he'd only broken the standard barrels when he was less than a foot away, yet the exploding barrel went off 3 frames later (at 30 fps, so after .1 seconds) when he was three feet away. Instead, some fragment of a standard barrel went flying into the explosive barrel and thereby set it off, since those disintegrate into physics projectiles rather than the implosion of dust from explosive barrels.

Just to be sure (especially given Fister Roboto's comment), I went back and tested this on Scholar. Rolling into that barrel head-on, with nothing else in the way, destroyed it without incident. But rolling into it from the side like Geop did (first hitting/bursting standard barrels between me and the explosive barrel) triggered the explosion. So yes, rolling into explosive barrels will not innately make them explode. But instead, certain physics interactions (such as weapon sparks or pieces of a just-burst standard barrel) will make them explode.

*This isn't hard to do, actually, even without downloading the source file. Set the YouTube video to x.25 speed, then pause the video just before the part you'd want to analyze. To advance frame-by-frame, rapidly double-click the play/pause button as needed to proceed to each new frame. (Of course this is easier with a source file, given that a number of video players will natively accomplish this!)

I think Geop displayed commendable survival instinct there. With the huge amount of bloodstains there and a thing swooping overhead it totally looked like a Hellkite Dragon bridge moment. :colbert:

Agreed, I want to say I would have done the same thing, but when I played at that point, I must have missed whatever was swooping overhead because I don't remember it at all :saddowns: I also didn't know you could blow up the wall. It's actually really fun seeing just how much crap I missed despite thinking I was thorough :v:

Ha, yeah, I did exactly the same thing: climb up preparing to rush down our firebomb friend, see the thing swoosh past overhead and then NOPE NOPE NOPE. Then I went back up and got repeatedly murdered by the gank squad up there.
I also saw the turtleman blow himself up three times before I made the connection between barrels and explosions, up until then I thought that they had some kind of suicide attack or that it was the unseen swoopy enemy dropping some kind of crazy AoE on me. I am bad at this game, but one thing this game does (mostly) right is that it makes it easy to laugh when you do stupid stuff like that.

You said in the video you thought you had a handle on the difference betwen barrels, but I do want to share a visual shorthand thing that helped me. The explodey barrels are not only much darker in color, but they also look like they've been dipped in gunpowder from a quick glance.

Alternatively just roll through them and you should almost never* blow up.

Rolling into explosive barrels is just not safe since anything else that might be in the way could make them explode for some reason. This game isn't very consistent when a wooden shard from a destroyed crate will set them off, but a wooden arrow doesn't even break them.

I'm fairly certain only fire will set off the gunpowder in DS3 instead of arbitrary projectiles/sparks... as it really should.

The barrel shards were physics objects and the barrels can be set off by physics which is actually situationally useful.

I tried this after this session thinking "HEH, I'VE GOT A PLAN" and yeah. The fact that normal arrows don't set 'em off really frazzled me :( I'm sure special arrows are likely able to do the job, but I was banking on an easier solution for the time being.

Oh well, there are other solutions, but that's for another session.

Heavy arrows (and bolts) will do the job.

They should just break explosive barrels, though, not explode them.

I think fall damage is based on your unhollowed max HP. Geop survived following the very first firebomber off the wall, but when I tried it I was hollowed down to half HP, it was a lethal drop.

In DaS1 falling damage took of a percentage of your max HP. In DaS2 falling damage is a fixed amount, so jumps tend to be more dangerous for low level players. Your equip load does still affect it though: The heavier your are, the more damage you take from falling damage.

Yeah, it's complicated and non-relative. 1600 damage from distance and chuftiness is the "chunky salsa" threshold where no mitigating factors can save you (Fall Control, the ultimate parachute technique, reduces it by 1599).

I always kill the guy up top throwing firebombs by climbing up the ladder and then the encounter with the 2 guys down the stairs is easier if you rush the halberd one so I never hang around those barrels long enough for them to be hit.

It's an incredibly tough encounter if you don't do the smart thing (gj Geop) and pull them slowly to fight one by one; the two-handed sword wielders can be quite fast, have devastating combos and deal a surprisingly large amount of damage with a lot of their attacks, which can also be uninterruptible. Meanwhile, there's a spear guy in the mix and those are always the biggest dicks around. Later in the area, I suspect it's already been found and if not it's not a huge spoiler, there's an encounter just with a bunch of sword dudes, and it's far easier because you can bunch them up and make them react in the same way. Here? No such luck.

This encounter also wasn't there in vanilla, if that hasn't been said already. But the Estus Shard also wasn't there. The swooper has always been, though. And yes, his SotFS buddies are hardcoded to only stand up after you're done with the mysterious encounter Geop didn't see - the changes are sometimes mean and make the game tougher, but they tend to be not completely unfair. Like in the oft-discussed Forest example with all the dudes lying on the floor, they're more, but it's the player's fault if he activates more than two at a time. The firebomb thrower at the top also used to be a bowman, who deals less damage but is more accurate, changing the dynamic a lot. It's actually really interesting.

The most bullshit thing about the "sword bastard" -type shambler is that charge where he braces that sword to his midsection and just runs you through. Even if Goönther hadn't been weak enough to die from a falling leaf, it would've procced damage like four times and probably insta-killed him anyway.

If I had to pick a best New Jersey movie it'd probably be "Atlantic City" by Louis Malle. Burt Lancaster is an aging ex-gangster smitten with a casino waitress played by Susan Sarandon, and they get involved in a drug deal that goes bad. Really understated film, superb editing.
