haven't had a chance to sit down and play my own copy yet but after playing some games on a friend's xbox last night, it's fascinating how much less frustrating PC open beta was. not even a kb+m versus controller thing, it's purely down to the extremely minor ability to dash off a message that says "hey maybe two widows and a hanzo isn't the best comp here." you can't even spam voice emotes or anything, it's horrifying.

I've been trying to get better as Genji so I can counter Bastion and get some assassination in, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around how he plays. I slink around and plink people with my ninja stars. When I'm ready to take on Bastion or when someone is shooting me at medium range, I hit e and charge. After my e wears off, they kill me while I desperately try to eke out a little more damage.

When you're reflecting, the bullets actually get reflected in the direction of your crosshair, and if your crosshair is over someone then they will hit them. So run in front of a Bastion, point your crosshair directly at him, and press E. You'll bounce all his bullets right back into his own dumb robot gun face and he'll die. I wouldn't recommend starting your fight with it unless you think you're going to come out of it with a reflect kill, though - just like with Zarya, good players will just stop shooting you when you use Deflect, and then as soon as it stops they'll unload on you while they know you're on cooldown. Just like with Wraith Form, I like to try to hold it in reserve and use those few seconds of protection to make my escape if things go poorly. Genji doesn't really have the bulk to charge in for a frontal attack; he's better off using his mobility to attack from unexpected angles. Shuriken do nice damage, especially if your target is standing still and you hit their head, and his charge is a good quick finisher on weakened foes.

practice shooting the dartboard in the waiting area on Anubis. Really though, the only way to get better at aiming is by lots of determined practice. The other thread had a discussion about mouse sensitivity. I lowered mine on that advice and I've been much more accurate in general.

If you're having trouble, try aiming with your feet - rather than trying to move your crosshair and your character at the same time, leave the crosshair in one place and maneuver your feet to put the crosshair over the enemy. For example, strafing left and right and clicking whenever your crosshair passes over the enemy. This is especially good for bursty characters who fight in close range and use their mobility to stay alive, like Tracer and Reaper.

Stay in the back. Take advantage of other heroes for cover. Aggressively focus on targets who are being pushed by other people using Discord and Destruction orbs. Know where the enemy Widowmakers are and stay the gently caress out of their way. Take the time to let your shields get back up. Stay in the back.

You gotta stay near the back and take advantage of your excellent range. Discord the tanks and melt them. The right click is good for corners and such but just holding down left gives you more dps afaik. Remember your orbs work on Line of Sight.

- if your orbs aren't both out you're messing up
- you don't have the same healing throughput as a mercy or lucio, but your burst capabilities are way higher to compensate.
- maybe don't play him in pub games
- definitely do not play against a good widow
- don't put the heal orb on reinhardt

what specifically is giving you problems?

sorry, here's another, lesser known example of negation

lucio's sound barrier gives ~500 shields, with -80 every second, rip-tire does ~600 damage at its center, with falloff the further out you get; a resonably timed sound barrier can stop the damage from killing most people

alternatively shoot the tire, its not hard to hear "fire in the hole" and start looking for an entry point

Reaper is actually pretty decent as a brawler if you just walk into their face with your team. I had assumed he was mostly for flanking but he's honestly quite good for deathballing and he'll shred reinhardt and winston shields for your team.

Help people by giving them the cool heal orb when they are hurt and do things by shooting people with the purple orb then the clicky orbs. Purple orb will tell you where they are through walls. If you're asking how to stay ALIVE, that's the hard part, and if your team isn't watching your back and the other guys have good flankers or snipers, it's honestly really hard to as Zen. I know you don't want suggestions saying switch heroes but in that case it's really the best way to go. Hero switching is what the game is all about.

I mean at this point it's difficult to offer anything beyond "melt important targets with discord and your own solid DPS, heal people with harmony, pass through the iris to sustain a push/hold a point/heal through a DOT ult, Always Be Orbing" unless you can articulate how it is that you are failing to be useful

e: as someone said earlier, charging is useful if you expect someone around a corner or are peeking yourself, but left click is better for sustained dps

I don't really like it except against tanks (basically Reins honestly.) Hitting a fully-charged headshot is fun and all but you're way more effective pounding them with regular orbs.

Yessir. It does brutal damage against slow or stationary people and if you can meatshot it onto the fast squishies who come hunting you you can delete them. But really only around corners and situations like that because otherwise m1 is better.

Put Discord on someone, anyone, then shoot at them and look at how much damage you do. A lot of new Zenyattas fail to realize just how loving fast he can kill people.

"Helping People" is something you do almost absent-mindedly, don't bother chasing idiots pushing past your line or way out of line of sight to heal them, it's not your job.

If you have Lucio, he can hold a point decently well. You can deal out a lot of damage and clear out low health heroes from the point, do a lot of damage to a tank, and then go into shadowform to disengage a bit and let your teammates crash the point, and then dive back in.

For some reason I have a ton of success with this on Nepal.

The general advice is "put them in places people won't expect", but I think a better take is "put them in places people don't look at as often." This isn't TF2, the sentry doesn't actually do THAT much damage (something to the tune of 50 dps at level 2) and isn't particularly durable either.

You want the sentry near the fight, it isn't going to accomplish much if you try to set up sneaky ambush sentries if the other team is at all decent (and I mean at all decent, not like when people say "mei will never do anything if people aren't awful" which is a huge over-exaggeration). Try to put your sentry on high ground since people tend to look down or forward when moving around and in firefights. If there's no good high ground try to find bushes or nooks which are overlooking the area where your team will be fighting and aren't directly in the line of fire, but also won't reveal themselves before the fighting happens since then they can just be spammed down.

Another tip: walk up to the junkrat ult and tank it as zarya. Thanks to the lag compensation design, your shield probably won't show up on their screen when you pop it just before its in kill range but you won't die, the tire will be gone, and you'll have half a tank to start chucking laser bombs
