Freyja and Hayate are both completely useless for pretty much anything except big dramatic concert + dogfight situations. Good thing they are in a show where that is the primary method of conflict resolution, huh? I dunno how Mirage is gonna fit into their dynamic, though. She seems more of a third wheel than part of a potential love triangle so far.

The parts where Hayate and Mirage were leaning on each other to make it through Messer's tough love and then supporting each other during the space dogfight to compensate for their lack of skill were really good, but I agree that there's not a lot of love interest vibe there yet. Their relationship so far is pretty buddy buddy but that's it so far.

Even during training/rehearsals they both kind of suck, meaning they are only any good at the real thing and only while supporting each other. I don't really understand why seeing Hayate flying around makes Freyja so much better at singing the var away, but that is indeed the case.

Freyja's entire character weakness is that she's unsure of herself and doesn't really have a strong, specific drive of her own. In any situation where she doesn't have any real outside motivation besides "sing", she can't summon the magic space juju, so she's terrible in practice sessions and normal concerts. The thing that kicks her into gear is when her song might actually be able to help someone in extremis. It's not just Hayate that causes her to stop sucking, it's any time someone might need help that she feels she might be able to help by singing. She manifested magic space powers during the Walkure test in the train car with the fake var guy when Hayate was nowhere to be found, and the reason her singing got real in this episode was because she wanted to save the brainwashed catguy pilot. Her singing to Hayate while he was failing his test against Mirage was simply her trying to help him like she tries to help everyone. Hayate's the one who seems to only really kick into gear when Freyja's singing is involved.

The rush Hayate felt back in the first episode while he was flying to Freyja's song was pretty much lifechanging. It's not really that surprising he seems to only really be in the zone whenever she starts singing.

I wonder if there's actual plot relevance to the fact that Freyja only seems to have one heart-shaped rune instead of the two cross-shaped runes all of the other Windermerians we've seen have had, or if it's just a quirk of cutesy female lead design. Maybe a gender dimorphism thing?
