So what you're saying is a while ago you made some stupid comment that's hypocritical that you regret, then?

Anyway, Gawker is a mixed bag but I still stand by my One Of The Good Ones status for them. Their owner/boss/whatever is a shithead who makes a lot of bad decisions and should be replaced, but many of their reporters are pretty good people who do good stories that are not "hey guys a celebrity had a sex let's all watch!"

I meant that more as a dumb snarky joke than anything but good job showing your "it's just ~ironic~ racism!" hand

I guess my core point is Gawker as a whole is hugely varied; they encourage their reporters to be opinionated in whatever weird way they want and they own a lot of very different outfits. A bunch of these people are shitheads who get off on stirring up poo poo and destroying lives. Quite a few of the other people are good reporters who break important stories, and the rest are just pretty good reporters who make fun of lovely people. Do I wish I could separate the first group from the rest? Absolutely. I'm not saying the first group isn't unrepentantly lovely or doesn't deserve to be sued in court for all their money, I'm just saying the first group isn't the whole story and much, if not all, of their staff is good.

GE made the majority of our nuclear weapons, but they also make most of our advanced medical imaging equipment and a bunch of other important life-saving stuff. I can both be appalled at GE's defense contractor side and simultaneously think GE is good for making medical equipment because GE is not a single person.

I believe you have addressed the 'fallacy of composition' - where a part is not necessarily representative of the whole, or inversely where a part is not necessarily able to be considered in isolation. While Gawker has shitbags in the company, that doesn't mean it's a company of shitbags. Conversely, Breitbart is a company of shitbags, and it... hmm wait no it doesn't have individual non-shitbags oh well.

Jezebel isn't Gawker. Sure, they're owned by Gawker, but they're very different outfits. I'm sure the Jezebel staff was forbidden from commenting on the Hulk Hogan thing, but iirc, there have been some hints that they weren't very happy about it.

Please stop engaging with the shitposter tia.

Ignoring the fallacy of composition, the company that pays employees that do Bad poo poo is still directly and wholly responsible for the actions of its employees. Companies are not some monolithic entity, they're organizations of people. When some low-level peon does A Bad Thing, it's rarely at their own instigation. Definitely less so in journalism, but companies still wink-wink-nudge-nudge journalists into doing quasi-illegal poo poo to get a good story before their competition (eg the phone hacking scandal from a few years ago).

Yeah and I said that, Gawker had some people in high-level positions doing incredibly bad poo poo and the guy that runs the whole thing is an unrepentant rear end in a top hat, I think he should be fired and Gawker (and him personally) should lose a bunch of money in damages. I don't think they should be driven out of business however, since even though the poo poo-stirrers were pretty high up, the poo poo-stirring department was overall pretty small (if loud) compared to all the other things they did.

I think it's fair for Gawker to go out of business over this. Posting porn of people without their consent is never OK, even if it's someone you hate.

But it's ridiculous for the DE/alt-right shitlords to call people hypocrites for supporting Jezebel's condemnation of "the fappening" when Jezebel is owned by Gawker. I can agree with one thing a company does while condemning another. I can enjoy a website without any implication of loyalty to every single decision made by its management. The way these guys have treated the Gawker thing makes about as much sense as someone saying PYF goons are hypocrites because some dude in D&D supports gun control while TFR is all about guns.

Anyway, semi-on-topic but is anybody in this thread going for the $10 reward for the NaB KS? If so, what other books are you going to request? I know I want Guided by the Beauty of their Weapons, but I'm not sure what else to request. What are you guys thinking about?

Literature is not exhaustible, for the sufficient and simple reason that no single book is. A book is not an isolated being: it is a relationship, an axis of innumerable relationships.

A quote from this blogpost

quote:

I'm feeling remorseful about my treatment of Matt Forney after an exchange with a gal on "Jezebel" who knew him in high school.

She wrote:

This guy went to my high school. It actually makes me laugh when I read this stuff because the image he creates for himself is SO HILARIOUSLY FAR from reality. I remember him as an overweight, pants up to his boobs, trombone player who ran to class like a duck and couldn't look any attractive girl in the eye.

and also this:

It is pretty sad when I think about it. I'm not sure he was ever categorically bullied but he was certainly socially excluded in school. I'd be surprised to learn he had any friends. If he actually believes any of what he writes, it will be because for years he recognized what other people saw him as, a band geek that looked 12 when he was 17. A weirdo who could never get a girl's attention, an outsider. Even calling himself "the most hated man on the internet" is telling, everything he writes is a cry for acknowledgment. He doesn't care if you hate him as long as you see him! It's a way for him to collect some personal power that he hasn't owned his whole life. I'd be curious to know what his family life was like...

My heart cracks a little to know that at seventeen, he looked twelve. And now at 25, he looks forty. Has this guy ever caught a break in the looks department? The only compensation for premature balding is that when he actually is forty, he probably won't look much different.this blogpost
