So I'm building a trap fence. Dug the first pit, then started on a second... and literally 10 minutes later a goddamn stag runs into the first trap while I'm standing right there. I guess I found a good place.

It's nice to see all the updates too, I haven't played URW in several years. Still my favourite survival type game by a mile.

Do fences slow down robbers, etc? I've never had an issue climbing a fence but does being on a fence square affect combat at all? If they kick the fence and then move into the square and I'm next to both squares how many attacks will I get in? I'm busy hunting for winter stockpiling and building an enormous compound to keep out the government njerpaz/robbers.

If I fill a choke point with fence is it an effective defense?

Sadly fences are basically useless except as animal pens and against neutral humans and creatures.

Aggressive humans and beasts will just jump or kick them down, which will take 1 turn at most so unless you're behind a triple layer of fences with a bow, it won't buy you much time.

Counterpoint, they will still funnel what would normally be hostile animals (bears, wolves) into pits if you're not in view. I've caught several bears by staking out the local watering hole.

Yeah of course, I was talking in a defensive situation with someone bent to get your blood, no fence will save you :v:

A lynx jumped my fences once to eat one of my pigs though

Does any domesticated animal other than Dogs defend themselves if attacked by wild animals? If I decide to get a few cows I would expect them to gang stomp most predators, especially if I throw in a Bull as well. Actually, would be fun to build a moat around my future mansion which would be full of angry bulls to gore anything foolish enough to enter.

My long term 100 days+ game where I had accomplished so much finally ended, thanks to a Bear, naturally. I thought I could take it as I had 75% Dodge, 2 companions with great weapon skills and I guess I got arrogant from my first Bear kill which was certainly nothing more than extreme. Needless to say, I managed to shoot once with my bow, then it ran up and clawed my face off in a single turn, dead. My companions probably shat themselves and ran after that.

Now atleast I can play a bit recklessly again with new characters, I just now slaughtered the men women and children of an entire village and sold off their belongings to the nearby Driik one for some masterwork tools. Once my minor wounds have recovered I am gonna do the same thing to another village. Starting with 85% spear skill turns out to be pretty good.

Fair point, but as long as there's a free version and folks know about it, a lot will go for it. I know I did when I had less money to waste :v:

Thread is accurate to the real sauna experience, you start out telling your hunting stories and work stories and fighting stories over and over until everyone realizes they've been telling the same stories about different days and everyone just shuts up and stares at a wall until the next new guy comes in to eagerly explain about the reindeer that got away.

Except here the new guy tells you about how he was dismembered by a lynx, or murdered a bunch of kids with a woodsman axe and then disappeared in the woods.

in craziness-related news, URW got in the Guinness World Records Gamers edition for being actively and constantly developed since 1992.

quote:

GWR Gamer’s Edition 2017 was published today and what do we find there?
UnReal World gets a world record with “Longest update support for a game” title. Basically, that means that since the first version release there has been a constant stream of updates, for a record-setting 24 years in a row.

Those guys are dedicated.

In game-related news, apparently the next version is being finalized this month, and probably released in October with quests. Should be enough to get me back into the game for a while, sense of purpose and quantity of things to do is what feels most lacking after the early "oh God I need food and tools" scramble

quote:

We have around 15 quests ready by now, and I've decided to spend September for finalizing the upcoming version, with a release possibility following in October. The last quests being worked on now are the escort type ones, and when they are done I...just...gotta...stop even thinking of any more quests at all. We'll start with a fistful, and have all the future to add more later on.

the future will also bring more magic to the game:

quote:

During the next month it's also time to start writing down the list of new features, and in case of quest there's a bookful of stuff to pinpoint. I'll be dropping entries for you as I proceed. And gotta say that it's interesting times ahead not only with quests, but with new spells also.

See, about a year ago I posted being inspired by certain spellbooks:http://z3.invisionfree.com/UrW_forum/index.php?showtopic=6512

And oh yes, we're going to have lots of new spells, although featured in a little different way than the current ones. Actually, there will be more new spells added than there are current spells now. But more about that when I get down to write a few chapters about news spells as quest rewards.

Nice!

Actually there's better, straight from the linked dev post above:

quote:

most amusing hunting spell I found found is a magic mean to better succeed in finding bird eggs. You should crawl into a cowshed backwards and eyes closed, then grope testicles of a bull there, and crawl back out. After that the spell is done, and you should find bird eggs easily

Nah it's going to be low magic like what is already in game

quote:

No high magic stuff, that's not our cup of tea, but ordinary things that have magical meaning behind them. For example, to make fishing equipment that pleases the water spirits you would need to do it in certain weather, during certain time of the year, or out of a tree that is growing at certain location.

Or, you know, grabbing a bull's testicles to improve your egg finding skill

The magic elements being subtle and mysterious and not of the MAGIC MISSILE variety are one of the things I really like about this game. It's ritualistic and interesting and it's cool that more stuff is being added. Crafting equipment under specific circumstances to appease spirits and such sounds really interesting, and it if that's what they're doing then they're getting a twofer. It not only adds to the magic system already in the game but it adds to the crafting.

In preparation for the new patch, I want to start a new game and remembered there's a real nice graphics mod which I highly recommend to everyone. Some of this was already included in the latest version, but the mod still has a great deal of new tiles and imo improves the game tenfold. Also replaces the terrible Finnish cosplay pics with cool drawings.

So what scenario should I play? I am pretty bored with my usual hunting trip gone wrong and I don't want the easy fisherman or cottage. Should I go all in and try my luck at hurt helpless and afraid?

here's one that apparently works with 3.30 - it's supposed to be a collection/refinement of the older clothing, ironworking and self sufficiency mods. I have no idea how well it works because I never bothered much with this kind of mod, too many menus and thousand-steps crafting patterns scare me.

Also if I need iron weapons or armor it's easier to wander around and stab a Njerpez or two in the eye like every civilized iron-age Finn would, then either pry it off their cold dead hands or barter for it with their stuff

Anyway, I downloaded it and will give it a spin when I get around to starting my new game!

Edit: I see a couple of Rain's mods are also updated to 3.3x version, and since they're not a giant mega pack you have more granularity, and apparently are a bit less detailed so you don't have to craft 5 different tools to start working: clothing and cookery

Edit 2: holy poo poo this guy LOVES his cooking, if you want to be an iron age master chef get this
