I like the song Into the Nightmare the most, but they do have some other good ones like Life on the Wire. Now, this basically brings my list of metal bands that I enjoy and listen to regularly/semi-regularly up to three: Dio, Demon and Saxon. WASP for the shock rock stuff. If you like Dio and Saxon maybe try: Rainbow (also with Dio) Judas Priest Angel Witch Raven Also try to avoid using the term "screamo metal."

War of Kings from last year is honestly, no hyperbole, one of the best hard rock albums I've ever heard. They don't do the 80s sound anymore though, they reach more into the 70s blues rock style of Deep Purple etc. It's glorious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6WNhHV_GLQ

(Also thanks for telling me about Rock Candy Records, Wheat Loaf - looked at their site and found another couple of bands there, too)

I've been listening to this Tupac song on repeat for the last couple of months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VL2ZkK7rSI I must have listened to it literally tens of thousands of times by this point. I love the beat, the rhythm of the lyrics, and the lyrics themselves. I would love to find something similar, but I haven't yet found a song I like more than this one.

(then again good/bad with the fall is sort of an arbitrary distinction, the old "always different, always the same" john peel aphorism or w/e) i haven't listened to the last few since ersatz gb but i'm sure they're fine there was a comp released in the early 00s called 50000 fall fans can't be wrong that was a lot of peoples entry point back then and is a pretty well curated selection of material if you don't feel like wading through a bunch of these albums.

Can I get some recommendations for more stuff along the lines of Fear of Men, Pixx, and Florence and the Machine? Particular favorites of each linked. Hopefully the sufficient condition of being music I dig involves more than just a female depressive with a maritime obsession on lead vocals but I'm starting to doubt.

What are some good synth-pop or synth-rock songs like "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" by Talking Heads? Or something like "Rip It Up" by Orange Juice, "Making Plans for Nigel" by XTC? I'm open to any era, but I'm also interested in any new bands/songs that have this sound.

I'd like some recommendations for... I'm not sure how to describe. Songs that tell stories? Especially ones with some sort of emotional impact. Like, as an example (the first thing that pops into me head) there's Some Kind of Hero, I'm not looking specifically for songs in that genre or with that subject matter, but just the sort of 'story as a song' thing in that style? Like, it's better as a song but you could totally just read it as a story and it would totally work. It would also be nice to know if there's a name for that sort of thing to make this question easier in the future, hah. I know it's probably something stupid I should already know but I've got no idea. GlyphGryph fucked around with this message at 18:08 on Jun 2, 2016 |

OK, I'm looking for cover songs with a weird set of criteria. I want to hear covers that are genre-swapped and/or gender-swapped and preferably not weak acoustic guitar covers. I've been listening pretty heavily to In the Air by Alex MIDI, Sex by Cheat Codes, and Look Good in Leather by Ceci Bastida. Anything like these would be great, thanks!

The Hold Steady tell mini stories in a bigger narrative framework, I'd start with Boys and Girls in America as the most accessible. A ton of Mountain Goats songs are also narrative, with All Hail West Texas telling a bigger story. It probably goes without saying a ton of rap music is narrative, definitely Kendrick Lamar.

GlyphGryph posted:I'd like some recommendations for... I'm not sure how to describe. Songs that tell stories? Especially ones with some sort of emotional impact. This is a pretty big tradition in folk music. A lot of Bob Dylan songs work for this, especially during his political era and his early 70's output. Hurricane, Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again and "Went to See The Gypsy" are good examples, but you can pick anything from "Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" all the way to "Desire" and find gold. The Band is also fantastic for this: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, When I Paint My Masterpiece, The Weight, Acadian Driftwood Paul Simon: Gumboots, Graceland (do yourself a favor and listen to that whole album), Still Crazy After All These Years Pretty much every single The Mountain Goats song: Jenny The Fruit Bats: Singing Joy To The World To go into "Rock" or other genres: Tom Waits is great for this as well: Shore Leave, Ol' 55 Leonard Cohen: So Long, Marianne, Memories Randy Newman writes stories with unreliable narrators: Last Night I Had A Dream, Old Man They Might Be Giants also do unreliable narrators, in a much weirder way: Museum of Idiots, Kiss Me, Son of God, Dead How about some funnies? Flight of the Conchords were great at this before they became HBO stars: Jenny, Bus Driver's Song,
