But it really pisses off racist Southerners when you mention burning Atlanta and General Sherman, so it's a nice instigator when you want to rile up the racists.

Ironically Sherman was not as despised after the war. It wasn't until Jefferson Davis' autobiography that Sherman was portrayed as the ultimate enemy of the South.

Sherman was rather fond of the South and it's institutions and was apparently very hurt when public opinion turned against him.

Sherman likely didn't cause much destruction, either.

It seems that every southern town in his wake has a story that "Sherman had a girlfriend there/thought it was pretty/saw the word Union on a sign" and left them alone. He didn't even burn the state capital, just destroyed some papers in its library.

The point of him rampaging through the South was to draw off reinforcements that could have gone to Lee's troops in his fight against Grant, and at the same time show the Confederacy that the Union could go wherever it wanted -- and there was nothing they could do to stop them.

He also burnt Atlanta and Columbia. Grant beat Lee fair and square, but Sherman's March was a humiliation.

Depends on what you mean by "drafted." Everybody was registered for the draft and a lot of draftees were called but, really, there wasn't much draft dodging and the military didn't have a shortage of volunteers. Given that everybody was registered anyway it's kind of hard to draw the line where volunteers end and conscripts begin. You had people getting drafted and going in thinking "whatever, I was going to volunteer anyway" and volunteers whose draft numbers ended up getting called.

poo poo loads of people were eager to go fight WW2 after Pearl Harbor; the draft was started before then but U.S. leadership knew we were getting involved in the war eventually whether we liked it or not. Vietnam was different in that they were trying to draft people that didn't want to fight an increasingly unpopular, aggressive war.

chitoryu12
Apr 24, 2014

From my understanding, the draft wasn't really viewed as a totally negative thing except for the pre-entry period (where draftees were being recruited without having a real cause to fight for before Pearl Harbor) and 1944-1945 (when it was starting to look like a real meat grinder and the possibility of a costly Japanese invasion was still on the table, and life at home was getting better so the military benefits weren't that special). There was a ton of volunteering after Pearl Harbor incited a fire in the men for revenge, with recruiting stations having lines going around the block. Some people volunteered because they figured that they'd be drafted if they didn't and wanted to at least have some say in their preference.

My reading has also found that soldiers actually appreciated their conditions early in the war, as they got more food in greater variety than at home and decent sleeping conditions while stateside, when they just as likely would have been living off hog and hominy at the farm. Opinions started to turn when the wartime economic boom made life on the base less desirable than life at the house.

By not beating me, he has beaten me.

From the other side, a lot of soldiers enlisted specifically to avoid the draft, since they'd be able to choose their MOS instead of mostly getting pushed into infantry.

She is legitimately the dumbest person I have ever met and every idiotic question is 100% sincere. I still enjoy hanging out with her though.

As a zoo employee I get faced with this often and I've given up trying to respond when I see stuff like this on my feed. People seem to forget things like environmental destruction, critically endangered species, etc have honestly very little hope anymore. Some species only exist in captivity now because their habitats are destroyed and they're considered highly valuable dead. My zoo raises millions of dollars a year through admission and donations that is then donated to international conservation and species reintroduction programs and we're part of global endangered species breeding programs, but apparently that money will just materialize from some other source if we just shut the zoo down! Right? All of those people who paid to get into the zoo will immediately donate all of the same amount of cash to conservation initiatives as soon as we shut the zoo down, I'm bloody loving sure of it.

I'd like to live in a world where we don't need zoos, but that world does not exist so I'll work to making a good one a good place to be.
