You're thinking Simplified (PRC) vs Traditional (Taiwan), which is more like a slightly more involved version of localizing for the UK vs the US. The standard Mandarin spoken in both Taiwan and most of the PRC is pretty much the same, with a handful of pronunciations and a number of words being different. The character sets used are way more different, but these are more akin to spelling differences than an entirely new language since the words and grammar are overwhelmingly the same. Imagine if the US spelled it "laff" where the UK kept "laugh", and then go through the whole language, not everything changes but a lot does. A localization for Traditional and Simplified Chinese is like 95% the same job since you only have to go in, change the characters that are different and fix up any words that might be different across the strait. Cantonese on the other hand is basically an entirely other language when spoken, and still pretty different when written. Where Simplified and Traditional are like a US/UK divide, those two and Cantonese are like English and French. It is politically loaded, and Cantonese is legitimately being targeted with mandatory Mandarin classes in school, and Cantonese language media in Guangdong being suppressed, but this feels more like a business move from Nintendo over anything. I normally consider my friends on fb to be moderate and as a result I lack any sort of content for the thread. This morning I woke up to an old buddy from art school having shared a couple of articles from Milo Yianoppolis (or however the gently caress it's spelled) and some woman named Lauren Southeren condemning false rape claims and I lost a significant amount of respect for him
