A few things about the grenade to keep in mind. 1) It had a cost (draft pick) 2) It can (in theory) be acquired by anyone willing to pay an accepted price by the current owner 3) Social engineering may aid in the selection of a target 4) The damage is relatively limited in scope. The loss of one player may derail some seasonal ambitions, but shouldn't result in a team's utter annihilation, especially since players are healed for the Gauntlet. So there are some mechanics to mitigate it. The white envelope was probably the single most cheap, bullshit way to end a team's season, and what was the end result? A one season delay for Beet as he curbstomped his way to the championship. This is far less awful than that.

Personally I think an item that'd be great fun would be an envelope that changes the age of any player to any desired age that player was in the majors. The catch is you must use it on a different team. So you essentially can either permanently enfeeble a star player permanently if you're a spiteful asshat, or you can accept a trade to make someone else' player prime. I mean, how much would Yaya pay to have his Ruth change from 40 years old to 25?

Sometimes people sell the farm to get an Eddie Collins and he's hit by plague and rendered worthless, and sometimes a team wins a magic grenade and every Ted Williams in the league is rendered worthless. I guess technically it's a Let's Play and we are all just participating in someone else's game anyway, but if you view bad stuff happening to you or others as just part of the story, you begin to take them less personally. The current grenade is likely going to be traded for by a powerhouse team and, one imagines, used on a magic shortstop (unless the Bombers or Panderers get it, in which case it's possible they use it on each other). Something like "if you have two copies of the same player, you can average their ages, but the transaction comes to a 20 point hit to their health scores" or something like that. I have lots of fun but bad ideas. A pity I can't use any of them in the EC.

If the grenade gets used and the victim is allowed to reset his /her lineup before the gauntlet round starts, no big deal. The Space Fish went whole seasons with the obvious solution to this weak point, and while it wasn't great, neither was it calamitous.
