Mad Men, while not necessarily being satirical, definitely does not portray most of it's male cast as good ol' "Men were men" types except on an extreme surface level. Don Draper is a deeply broken man, and the bulk of the episodes are about that.

He loving steals another guy's identity in the Korean War! Oh, yea, "men were men back then." :jerkbag:

I had to go back and ask my mom if it was really like that in the workplace back then. She said, "honey you don't know the half" then proceeded to tell me about all the times she was sexually assaulted by coworkers and bosses in the 60s with no recourse except to leave and try to find another job where it would be just as bad.

What kills me is Don Draper is basically my dad minus the material success part.

The revisionist idea that at one point in time women just sat around and ate bon bons while their husbands worked hit the big time in American culture thanks to Phyllis Schlafly and it's been sticking around ever since.

This is, of course, absurd, since women were also expected to be full-time chefs/nannies/maids/social secretaries/sex-providers (and absolutely nothing else) for life, and the massive spike in the divorce rate is both men and women realizing that model is bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. Not to mention all the racial and class factors that made that model impossible for anyone other than the white upper-middle class.

It's a sick fantasy for a world that barely existed for some and did and still degrades everyone involved. I get to hear all about it from my mom, who repeats it back completely oblivious to the needs of other women and how the breadwinner-housewife model played a major role in causing an incredibly toxic divorce. :smith:

Realizing The Handmaiden's Tale is American policy porn for some men and women out there continues to be the most depressing thing I know in politics.

I can understand the opposition to extrajudicial lists and restrictions in the abstract, but don't see an alternative. If I'm on ISIS recruitment websites, chatting them up, I expect that I'm going to be put on a list, just like I would be on a list for doing the same thing on snuff porn boards. What's the alternative? Not watch people who could be actively joining a known terrorist organization, and waiting until they succeed in killing folks to respond? That seems stupid if we have the means to otherwise head it off.

Now, if they're only applying this sort of scrutiny to Arabs, that's a different problem entirely.

How many times have you heard "Innocent Muslim put on government list for having a similar name to a terrorist" since 2001? Wasnt Ted Kennedy on it at some point? The government suppressing the rights of citizens for national security is pretty much the original worst-case-scenario for the united states, and we've known that for hundreds of years.

Women also always had jobs. Real jobs, for money. Being a full-time housewife has always been as rare as any other kind of idle rich. I know you allude to that a bit, but it frustrates me how many people think that the majority of, say, Victorian women were housewives. It wasn't men dying in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, it wasn't men painting watches with radium, it wasn't men staffing the department stores and the accounting departments and the computer labs. Not for the most part. Any time you've got a job you don't want to pay much for but you're too racist to let anyone non-white do it, women are your workforce. In history same as now. All you need to do is flip the gender of the workforce to see the prestige and pay magically change - men become film editors and suddenly it's high art worthy of millions. Women become biologists and it's a "soft science" for people who can't hack the real stuff.
