I went on a Victoria Day hike today, it was a bit grey and cloudy in Vancouver but I did not expect conditions to be this rough up the mountain. I always hike pretty well prepared but I should've brought crampons this time, I couldn't quite make the summit of Mount Seymour as I lost the trail in the fog (couldn't see the trail at all due to the snow) Happy month before summer :|

Got out for a nice overnight this past weekend in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Man, it's been too long. Need to get out more often.

I don't. It's on my shoulder at all times unless it's too dangerous or wet, then it's just in the top of my pack wrapped in a shirt or fleece. I sling it over my shoulder because it's too heavy for my neck and gives me a headache.

Hi thread, I went for a hike today. It was kinda cloudy and wet for most of the morning here but the mountain looked and felt and smelled (wet forests smell incredible) amazing going up and the view at the end is always worth it

Just a random photo dump out of boredom. Look for the person in red. it's a golden mantled ground squirrel, not a chipmunk. I will literally fight you over this.

I don't trust moving ice. But I might see small baby glaciers next month in John Muir Wilderness. Will post pics.

I did a heavy portion of my geography minor studying glaciers and their long term impact on landscapes so I'm just in complete awe of their power, I think they're just magnificent Some more from my field trip on the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park. I also got to heli-hike Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand, and stuck both flights complete on Youtube. I got to sit in the front seat because I was travelling solo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFTlpG8Stdo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdiGkZVUbrE

Here's some boring Alaska scenery from a hike beyond the Eagle River Nature Center. This river comes from a glacier. There used to be a huge beaver pond here. The beavers have been slacking off lately. Not pictured: the black bear that walked across the trail 25 feet in front of me and then proceeded to swim across a lake. I also saw one with binoculars from my lunch spot and another on the side of the road after the hike. That's a lot of bear sightings in a day even for Alaska.

I like mountain critters big and small! In other news, I made a 360 degree panorama of a thing I climbed on Saturday. The little building is a 6' tall equipment shed that no one seems to know why it exists.

Back to glacier talk; it looks like we're hiking over McGee pass in John Muir Wilderness and the trail goes right next to a glacier. I'll def grab some pics.

Hiked out to the face of the local Mendenhall glacier with my dog. Click for huge Halfway point overlook. Getting closer The final ridge before descending to the face of the glacier, no more vegetation past here. Looking down that ridge No pictures of the descent, but you get to the bottom and are greeted with one of the few signs on the trail. Thanks. The first bit of ice Sometimes there's accessable ice caves. Not right now though. Where the glacier was just 5 years ago, there's a bunch behind me going back to 2000 or so, They've stopped putting signs up since. About as close as you can get without getting too risky or having a boat.

I was away on the weekend on a short trip to the middle part of the Rocky Mountain Trench in southeastern BC, and did a cool hike to see hoodoos in terrain that I was very much not used to it was super windy and the cliffs/hoodoos were super steep and scary

Did I mention that I moved to Chile? Because I did, in April, and its been mostly a good time. Its about to hit winter solstice here, but at the 33rd parallel, that isn't too much of a problem. It is a long way to anywhere that would be called nature. Chile has some wonderful wilderness, but I don't know how to get to it. So last Friday, I took a bus to the eastern edge of Santiago, and then started walking Eastwards, climbing the foothills of the Andes, until I got to this viewpoint: I hope to see more of Chile, and have better things to share! Soon enough!

San Jacinto Wilderness / State Park Morning on the Vivian Creek trail in the San Gorgonio Wilderness More early morning Vivian Creek trail San Jacinto Peak as seen from the San Gorgonio wilderness Got to love that afternoon light in a forest Sunset from Mill Creek. Fun fact, this is one of the very few places you can see evidence of past glaciation in Southern California!

It rained today for my hike in Lynn Valley in Vancouver, I nearly died to mud and torrential rain over the ~14km but it was real pretty. This cedar tree is one of only a handful of old-growth trees left around here, the area was clear-cut around 1890-1910. It's estimated at 600-700 years old
