So what's the right lineup if you're going up against 5 Toblerones and a Mercy? They just burn through Reinhardt's shield so fast and their ults make them and their turrets unkillable.

Speaking of jumping and Volskaya, can you make the flank on the far left side from the attacker's spawn with anyone but D.Va or Pharah? I managed a few times in practice with Lucio but it was iffy and Winston's jump is just like a yard short.

A ton of characters can do it, way more than just those 2:

Doesn't think, just types.
So Reinhardt's charge seems to have some sort of AoE at the end. One charged into my turret as Torb while I was standing behind it, and it killed me. The charge visibly stopped at the turret.

you don't actually need to jump for the widowmaker one - jumping makes it a lot more risky and reveals that you're trying to flank if you fail. If you hug the corner you can just get a grappling hook to latch from where you're standing

this is pretty practical as long as you're not under pressure on that corner (and if you are they'll know about the flank anyway) since if you don't latch it refunds the cooldown

I've been seeing a lot of crappy Symmetras out there and it makes me mad because I think she's my favorite. Don't just jam all your sentries in one place to guard the teleporter! Sure they'll kill someone that comes around the wrong corner but then that person can just come back and plink at them and there's a decent chance you'll never kill anyone at all if you just hole up in one place. Crap sentries everywhere, all the time. Try to never not fight under one. Use them as actual sentries -- one on every flank ingress then watch for them going off so you can greet people when they come around a corner with a fully charged ball. If you think you're going to fight someone in a couple seconds poop a sentry nearby. Put sentries on the roof! And on the bottom of moving platforms! Sentries! In the corners! Not just all around the point, Junkrat will kill them. Space 'em out! Also stick one or two in the little side rooms that have health packs so low HP people looking to top up get zorched.

Had someone bitch at me about picking Sym on a KOTH match and I got 30 eliminations, 20 from turrets. Eat it.

Still working on good teleport placement sometimes. Run into a problem where it funnels your whole team through one chokepoint then Reaper kills everyone. Derp.

Last night a Reaper I killed 4 times on Numbani A complimented me in all chat, which I don't think has ever happened to me in a multiplayer shooter.

Putting sentries on the street signs on Numbani is p. funny. putting them on the payload can also be hilarious but they get shot fast.

oh and reinharts never seem to know the ball goes through the shield.

anyway I like symmetra.

Agree with all of this. Symmetra is one of my favorite characters to play but she takes good situational awareness and an understanding of the map. It also helps to understand which characters she's strong against and not bumrush Genji or something. You kind of want to hang around the outside of the firefight trying not to take sustained fire and then dogpile onto anyone that's injured or engaged with someone else.

HotS has some good examples of ways to make healing characters interesting. Like Uther: He gets a skillshot that heals allies and damages enemies in a line. So there's actual gameplay behind it. Or the monk: You heal nearby allies when you punch enemies. You can push a button to punch faster, so you heal more and smash more faces.

Offense classes would be boring too if all you did was lock a beam on someone and try to stay out of the fight.

I think you're missing the point here - healers are difficult to play against players who know how to focus them, their core gameplay is simple because you are going to be focusing on keeping yourself and whichever teammate you choose alive.

It is also a good thing (for the game's population and market penetration) to have characters that you don't need to have good aim to use well, although accuracy is pretty relevant on lucio since building your ult faster is in fact a good thing.

I've never used it personally, but double reins and bastion. You need more shields to get through some dumb turret filled choke, get a 2nd rein. Probably want one junkrat/76/pharah sticking with them too. Some healer and some sniper as standard roles.

Dayam. I've actually found most people are pretty happy I'm there and don't make a lot of demands. Maybe its b/c its on PS4 and fewer mic'ed people to bitch.

For a while I thought the "correct" way to play the class is just hold shield and trudge forward, but now I only do that when I've got goons/friends or a particularly effective pubbie or two. Otherwise, its just a big target that makes playing the game miserable for me and basically makes it 5 on 6.

These days I try to stay near objectives and look to intervene when support or weakened characters need help, shielding or hammering as necessary. My favorite moments are shielding a Dva explosion or charging a Roadhog away from our healer. Hero stuff.

On Symmetra: I don't play her but the worst Symmetras to deal with plant 1 or two turrets in a million loving places so you're always taking chip damage but can't really clear them or predict them. Plus good teleports and shielding etc. I love the "Death rooms" because I play winston a lot and just sweep them out.

certainly, the game should offer both simple (Mercy, Reaper) and involved (Genji, Widowmaker) options. Right now, the healing classes are way out in the shallow end, which makes them unappealing to a lot of players, and tedious when you're forced to pick one. But this could be improved with a more interactive design, like in the examples I gave.

Being a priority target doesn't inherently make the game interesting, unless your kit creates depth out of that scenario. (Sometimes Lucio's does this, but most of his role is automatic.)

This is pretty much a "problem" with every game with healing. From MOBAS to TF2 or whatever.

I don't think it's really that much of a problem tho, at least Lucio is fun and Mercy ain't bad for when you're drinking, aim is getting sloppy and kind of just loving around half paying attention.

I like to put the turrets near points of interest like the escort vehicle but vary their positions like high/low, behind shrubs, just around corners. You can be very creative. I love it also when the turrets attack Pharah as she's flying over.

Serioustalk: Playing healers and supports is fun to me. One of the things that attracted me to TF2 and to Overwatch is the presence of roles in the game that are not various flavors of Shoot Man In Face because that is more enjoyable to me. Every other class in the game revolves around Shoot Man In Face, there's plenty of room for Not Shoot Man In Face.

If you're complaining that it fills an important role in team comp, so does every class type. If you're just looking to play Sniper 24/7 well, you're the Widowmaker everyone hates.

Personally I'd love a more complex healer character to be added. I played healers at a relatively high level in wow arenas and am used to games that are very much reliant on positioning and situational awareness. If I can handle playing my keyboard like a piano while dancing around a pillar, I'm sure a more involved healer hero could be managed.
