It's not concern-trolling. I have an autistic relative who I personally had to talk out of suicide. A good part of it was that he believed he was incurably 'lesser' and would be unable to improve his life beyond its then-pretty-lovely state - and that since being autistic made him a bad person, he deserved to fail. This wasn't stuff he'd come up with on his own. This was a result of being exposed to years of anti-autistic prejudice on the Internet, and reacting poorly when he himself was diagnosed. Suicide watch is basically the worst possible way to spend your time, and I'd prefer if as few people as possible had to engage in it. Because it's fair to dogpile on someone if they've earned it: I'm also autistic, and using that as an insult is, believe it or not, kind of bigoted, and defending it and attacking anyone who calls you out makes you an rear end in a top hat. Fake edit for content: Our future technocratic overlords will save us with cold logic. Racist cold logic. It turns out Skynet is okay with white people posted:Borden and her friend were arrested and charged with burglary and petty theft for the items, which were valued at a total of $80. Compare their crime with a similar one: The previous summer, 41-year-old Vernon Prater was picked up for shoplifting $86.35 worth of tools from a nearby Home Depot store. Prater was the more seasoned criminal. He had already been convicted of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery, for which he served five years in prison, in addition to another armed robbery charge. Borden had a record, too, but it was for misdemeanors committed when she was a juvenile. So how racist will Roko's Basilisk be? I'm not trolling with that question; this is a legitimate problem. An "objective" rating system for criminals is exactly the sort of rationalist dystopian policy you'd expect to be dreamed up by starry-eyed techno-libertarians.

This is a spot-on observation but I'd like to bring something up and hopefully do it in a way which will lead to something useful and not more noise, and as a related follow up to the Uncle Tom/quisling/useful idiot discussion. I have a pretty strongly divergent neurology myself, although not on the autistic spectrum, so I understand that I may be coming at this from a bad direction. If I step in it, assume I misstepped in an attempt to start an honest and productive dialogue and wasn't trying to stir any poo poo. That said: I really, really dislike the way that the word "neurotypical" is used by some (much?) of the autistic spectrum community, including people I consider friends and allies. I fully understand the intent of the term, in the same way that "cis" is merely a way to say "not trans", but in my experience it's being used very commonly (but not exclusively) as a pejorative and not merely a descriptor. It reminds me uncomfortably of the way that SF and related fandoms often refer to non-fans as "mundanes" or "normies" or something as a way to feel superior to those people who had typically mistreated them. You probably didn't intend to use it this way in your post, but in the larger context it can easily be misinterpreted that way by somebody who's seen how the term is often used. My personal, immediate reaction to your use of the term was strongly negative and I had to step back and parse out exactly why. I feel like the term has been unintentionally damaged, that it is now loaded with unintended negative connotations and may need to be discarded in favor of something else, preferably something that doesn't contain an inherent value judgement like the word "typical" embedded in it. But since I am not actually part of the spectrum community, and have only been able to observe this use of language from the outside, I'd like to hear peoples' thoughts on this.

Welp, that's quite the meltdown. re: neurotypical I'd never considered the term before, but Heresiarch makes some p. good points; even leaving aside the insulting use in some circles, I think it's also not great in that it implies that there's only one way to be neuro-atypical (autism), when that's really obviously not the case. I have some autistic acquaintances that use "allistic" to describe people who don't have autism.
