The Benghazi conspiracy step-off point appears to be when Susan Rice (?) gave the initial report that the attack was caused by anger created by some guy making a movie depicting Mohammad/Islam in a bad light. That sparked some controversy in Egypt, and the general area.

This was so soon after the event that the dust hadn't cleared yet. When things got figured out, it turned out to be unrelated to the movie.

If you're willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the mis-read caused by Fog of War type misinformation, you're likely to not be a Benghazi conspiracy theory person. Everyone else thinks that the State Dept (HRC herself, and no one else) knew the whole story from the get-go and purposefully LIED to everyone about this movie for ??? reason, conveniently forgetting that there was a revised statement on in the incident later.

It is willful ignorance and witchhunting that leads people down the conspiracy path, and nothing more.

And we literally have people running around referencing a loving Michael Bay movie like there were some commandos watching it go down from a nearby rooftop while Hillary and Obama screaming STAND DOWN into a red phone and jerking off with fetal blood.

The best part is that there is no why. Why would Hillary and Obama do this? Oh, because they're evil - evil for evil's sake.

It's like right wingers believe they live in a world where people behave like cartoon supervillains. I think it's the one thing that really confuses me on a functional level. If you ask them why Hillary and Obama would do something like this, they replay with "Because they hate America and they shred the Constitution. Oh and they lie" No benefit, no reason, just BECAUSE.

It's pretty insane that Susan Rice doing her job with the information she had at that moment was apparently conspiratorial to some people, and later cost her being Secretary of State.

The typical reason I heard was that somebody that died (it varies depending on who you ask) knew something that Oblammo and/or Hitlery wanted silenced for some reason or another. The most insane one was when somebody was trying to convince me that Vile Rat was literally minutes away from leaking documents that would cause the entire Democratic party to be implicated in awful, terrible crimes (what those were he wouldn't say but just know that every Democrat is Satanstalinhitlermusollini!) and would all be arrested and put in jail forever. Obviously Obama and Hillary had to act fast by mobilizing their Muslim allies to shut him up!

The other side relates to their views on Islam; they perceive the entire religion as a gigantic monolith that is trying to take over the world, ignoring that a lot of the Muslim terrorism and violence in the world is directed at other Muslims. But no, Oblammo is a Muslim so he absolutely must be in on the conspiracy to destroy America and Christianity! It gets tied up into that a lot, really; they believe that all Muslims in the world want nothing more than to destroy America so anything bad that happens is probably related to that somehow.

The only explanation that makes the tiniest bit of sense is that a terrorist attack that close to the election would have been bad for Obama so he purposely tried to make it out to be something else. However the GOP decided to ghoulishly make it political before the bodies were cold which blew up in his face and when that didn't make Obama look bad they had to save face by obfuscating Romney's speech by muddying the water. Instead of just letting it go after the election though they decided to keep going I guess since they were in too deep to let go without something and thought they might find anything if they dug enough. Now it's a monster they don't know how to stop, much like the Tea Party in general.

Yeah there's been a major increase in spite-based policy from the Republicans lately. A few posters keep referring to them as Team Rocket and it really does feel accurate, although they have nothing as cute as Meowth.

The GOP is full of real fuckers now and I'm straining to think of any that aren't just terrible people. They believe in this "liberals-EVIL/conservatives-always persecuted" view so much that they'll believe anything that supports it, no matter how little sense it makes. Reasons, facts, really anything else is irrelevant so long as it makes them noble heroes and people who disagree with them monsters. I don't think they can even imagine that idea that spiting their good, traditional values is not the reason anybody left of Fox News gets out of bed in the morning. They will eagerly lap up whatever anybody who claims to support their views demands of them.

Looking at it this way, it makes sense: they need a great evil to surround them so they can feel heroic and important. The truth, that they are growing increasingly irrelevant and letting themselves become willing dupes due to their own stubbornness, is too frightening to bear.

It isn't just that; conservatives believe that they are America and that everybody that disagrees with them is attacking them and by extension America. They might not say it out loud but they believe that "America" is white guys that are at least middle class; everybody else is infiltrating America's borders to take all of their stuff. It's why "socialism = bad" is such a strong argument to that sector of the populace; "you have a good life that you earned and people want to have that life without earning it" sounds scary.

Trump's blatant racism, egotistical hatred of diplomacy, and current investigation for his scam university is already excused as being quaintly "unconventional." If anything, he's doing the GOP a massive favor by not only lowering political discourse and normalizing bigotry more tha ever, but when he fails, the republicans will be able to use him as a scapegoat for all the things they pushed for decades that he said aloud.

I've literally had people argue on Twitter that foreign lives have no value compared to American lives.

Like, I asked why he had no problem with all the US Embassy attacks (with foreign casualties) or 100k Iraqi civilians being killed in a pointless war under Bush, but was completely up-in-arms and unreasonable about 4 Americans at Benghazi, whose deaths were not the direct responsibility or Clinton.

It is a bizarre dementia.

They decided to go on a dirt digging expedition to hurt Obama and then took a shot at torpedoing Hillary. Nothing in particular came of it, so they're finally reaching the point when they have to wrap it up and release a report detailing findings. I expect the final report in September-October.

If there's one the RWM machine is good at, it's repetition. Like a lovely song getting stuck in your head, when you repeat the lie enough, it becomes rote - almost an inevitability.

I notice it a LOT now since I read this thread - you see the same phrases over and over from RWM people, specific terms and phrases like "shred the constitution" "Hillary is a liar" "____ hates America" offered up with little or no backing evidence. I'm sure there's a RWM Bingo card out there for following this that you could fill out in about 15 seconds by reading a single page of EPORW posts on Facebook.

It's like an entire media strategy based on memes. It's the best way to make an idea with no basis in reality get accepted as "truth" since it's always around and requires no effort to understand.

A bomb went off inside a Target Women's bathroom

quote:

A small bomb exploded in the women’s bathroom at a Target store in Evanston on Wednesday, and officials are investigating whether it’s connected to the company’s policy allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice. Commander Joe Dugan says no one was inside the bathroom when the small explosion happened a little after 4 o’clock. It caused minor damage and no one was injured. Early indications are that a plastic bottle was used but no projectiles like nails or tacks were inside it. Investigators are gathering evidence including examining store security camera video.
