How does it compare to Firewatch or Life Is Strange? I've played through the former & enjoyed it, my girlfriend wants to get the latter. I'm unfamiliar with Gone Home.

It shares a lot of DNA with Firewatch. Both of those games were created (in part) by various members/ex-members of the Idle Thumbs podcast, and Chris Remo is the composer for both games. There are a few Gone Home references in Firewatch, too - Good Ol' Christmas Duck appears in Firewatch, and some of the books you can find in Firewatch were written by one of the characters in Gone Home.

And another thing about the story is like, most of the intrigue of "what happened to these people?" dies out because within the first two rooms you find out that oh, the parents are just on vacation, but then the rest of the story doesn't elaborate on anything further other than telling you about the lovely sister until the very end, where it reveals that she's gone home

I played Gone Home, and it is probably one of the most pretentious games I've ever played. Walking around was oh so slow, the narration was just constant droning in the same monotone voice, the one "puzzle" i can think of was just ridiculously trivial (Oh look a safe, in the father's basement. i guessed that the combo on it is 1963 because that's the year JFK got assassinated. it was correct.)

The worst offense of the game was that there were these long, meaningless notes written in the smallest chicken scratch everywhere. The best part of the game was when my mother said "This isn't a game" while I was playing it. She plays Farmville.

The game was just such a boring, prolonged drone of worthless information about the character's sister that doesn't add to her in a meaningful way, nothing about the father was interesting in any way, it was all just a gray mess of boring and twee garbage. If I were to recommend a game LIKE gone home, I would suggest the Stanely Parable. It too, is a game where the gameplay is walking around and inspecting things, but where Gone Home has the narration as objects whose purpose is to say "This character has problems", the Stanely Parable uses narration as the driving mechanic of the game, with it changing depending how badly you intentionally gently caress things up, but Gone Home can't do that. Gone Home just has the narration in places, it doesn't matter if you find it or not, and hell, it doesn't matter so much that there were times when I just kept cancelling one audio log to play another, just by walking over and inspecting the triggers for that audio log. Does the game just expect me to pick up an audio log, and stand still while listening to the minutes of meaningless droning?

Gone Home is a game that I am glad I did not pay money to play, because the story is diarryhea, and I'm very glad that the other game for PS Plus this month was a basketball game with the most ridiculous story to be told.

If you wanted your "criticism" to be in any way valuable, you would have had to elaborate a bit more on why exactly you considered the information on the sister "worthless" and why it didn't add to her "in any meaningful way". Now your post basically boils down to "I didn't find the game or its story interesting", which is perfectly fine of course, but not really the fruitful critical piece you're advertising it as.

Ones enjoyment of Gone Home really depends on how interested you are uncovering stuff through exploration and really just taking in every bit of information you find. If you're the type that, let's say, doesn't bother reading a single note in the game then I think it's safe to say it's not for you because that is the game.

I haven't played Gone Home but if it's short and to the point I think I'll enjoy that more than Stanley Parable, which features a ton of different "routes" to take that all basically say the same thing for a purpose that I can only imagine amounts to "content."

I will say that I think that games like Gone Home, good or bad, are probably what benefit most from the idea of games as a service. The only way we'll really be able to experience things in a way we can divorce from notions of value is when we're paying for them as part of a package deal. I imagine an arthouse game that lasts an hour and makes you feel some interesting things is much more satisfying an experience when you're not judging it based on how many afternoons you can spend with it (which is an unfortunate but completely understandable metric). I think this recent trend of major distributors going with game subscription services will end up being responsible for the exposure of some really interesting ideas.

Oh yeah, surprising no one, Andrew "Who's in Da" House on interview with Gamasutra mentioned how the Neo is based on the smartphone cycle, and also that it won't be shown on E3 because no games currently take advantage of it.

Smartphone companies come out with new models pretty much every year, but it's a bad comparison since people actually need phones to some extent and buy and pay for them in a different way than consoles, which is a flat $400 for another black slab every time.

The fact that consoles take up a lot more space is a good point, not to mention that the most demanding mobile apps (i.e. games) target the lowest spec phones they can for the sake of reaching a wider market. New phones can't really rely on App Store software to push their sale and instead tend to focus on perks the manufacturer can guarantee (e.g. a better camera or 3D touch), whereas the PS4K will seemingly be entirely reliant on third-party software to demonstrate its value.

I think if anything pushes the PS4K for people who just got PS4s 1-2 years ago, it'll be some kind of backwards compatibility exclusively available to the PS4K. Or maybe people really are into the idea of more incremental console upgrades and I am just totally out of touch, I dunno.

Not to mention that there's zero actual reason to upgrade your phone more than once every couple of years, and constant iteration has totally hosed backwards and forwards compatibility for phone apps forever. Its not really a model to aspire to.

I'm half-convinced that the reason why mobile games are so wretched despite a huge market and years of progression is because (aside from the whole "no one will pay for it" thing) anything remotely complicated will break every update.

Well technically they're on a couple's retreat because they're having marriage problems as they're living in the house the father was molested in in 1963 and the mother is possibly cheating. The safe you find isn't the father's, it was the uncle's. The father keeps writing JFK fanfiction in which someone goes back in time to stop a terrible event because of what happened to him the same year Kennedy died.

I mean on a surface level sure that's right, but I thought it was great with its storytelling without being explicit about anything.
