Just got around to watching this week's Top Gear USA episode and I gotta say, it was one of their best episodes yet. Really captured the 'ambitious but rubbish' spirit.

This is truth. And to expand on that a little further. I think the current true successor of the former So-Called Top Gear is Top Gear USA. Harris and Reid were great, but could select alternate vehicles for the mail truck? And make me laugh myself silly in the process?

I don't know if it was Harris' way of talking or the cinematography but that Ferrari F12TDF piece felt like something from the old Top Gear. I really liked his video. Overall it was a pretty good episode.

Yeah that was by far the best segment so far this series. Rory's with the hot hatches was good too.

They still have virtually the same creative team so it's no wonder it's still as pretty as it ever was, the neon throbbing track was a cool touch that is definitely very Top Gear. If they keep Harris for doing the stupid cars I'm all for it.

^^ Also Rory's accent slipping a little and revealing a little 'street' every now and again in that segment made me smile.

What do you think costs more to film, an on-location shoot of an expensive car with full camera crew, technical crew, safety crew, and several hours of setting up shots and capturing footage, or sitting a B-list celebrity on a couch for them to plug whatever project they're working on at the moment?

That was me.

I can honestly imagine an emergency production meeting after the first broadcast that went:

'Look at the ratings, everyone hates the ginger's studio sections. He's killing us.
Hack out as much of him as you can and make up the time by padding up the interview bit with a couple of those "hilarious anecdotes" we previously cut out.'

Fifth Gear was cancelled a few weeks ago, IIRC right before TG2016 premiered.

I wonder if the execs behind that decision are kicking themselves now.

Chris Evans is Mandatory Fun personified and it's the wrong tone for this show. Old New Top Gear worked because of the sarcasm and undertones of self deprecation, it had layers.

So glad Rory and Harris are getting more air time on the main show. Even my other half, who doesn't really give a poo poo about cars, likes their segments better.

It rekindled my idiotic idea of buying a used LLV and throwing some stupid motor in it to build a gimmick drag car. They're basically S-10s underneath so all the standard GM drivetrain swaps should be viable.

All the jokes feel so forced. Like that bit between Harris and LeBlanc after the F12tdf film where he asks Harris if he'd date the Ferrari and Harris says, "I'd marry it!". No one in the audience laughs, and there's just this awkward silence. That's how pretty much all the in studio stuff goes and it's just painful to watch. Same with that Sabine bit doing the "some say.." in german and Matt is laughing hysterically. I know that was the joke but christ I'm pretty sure I heard somebody cough in the back of the audience.

This dude just doesn't get that most people don't have a problem with new TGUK as a whole - just Evans. I get the feeling, from here and elsewhere, that everyone would enjoy the show if they just ditched Evans. I know that's how I feel.

Evans is loving insufferable, but I enjoy all of the other presenters.

If Jordan wants to defend Evans based on the performance he's seen from Evans in upcoming Top Gear footage that hasn't aired yet that's fine. But it seems like the majority of the criticism towards Evans has been that he's a spastic, shouty, panderer, which seems quite fair and justified.

Caught the most recent Top Gear US, thought it was a bit of a miss. Concept sounded ok on paper; "500ish HP AWD convertibles in the winter" but the execution of the challenges just fell flat, especially the final rodeo challenge. Episode 10 looks really promising "Tanner, Adam and Rutledge head to Cuba, where they test and modify three classic American cars; the guys attempt to make history by competing in a government-sanctioned drag race." Really hope that one isn't a let-down
