I have a K100 which needs nothing and is in fact fully serviced to every procedure in the manual and I can't get rid of it for $1800. Also it depends what "some work" that old airhead needs. They do have weak transmissions and charging systems. Those can be like $1000+ and $500+ to fix, respectively, depending who you pay to do it and how bad it is. But the 90/6 is one of the better ones to get. It's the biggest engine they made on the first bike that had disc brakes. Well except for the R90S which is rare and much more expensive.

"I ride about 5-10 a year" I think, "5,000 to 10,000 miles a year? That's pretty good for a bike -- he must be a serious rider." Odometer: 275 What even is the point at that stage? It's no longer a motorcycle, it's a tacky airbrushed porn painting with wheels.

What do you guys think of this? https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/mcy/5631878310.html It's pretty pricy for a TB, but he might knock down the price if I skip on the street fairings. It's even got AK20s in the forks.

It's probably actually worth about 3k. 11 year old trackbike bottoms out about there. If it has a good set of spares, a bit more. I'd want it for 3k with everything, but I'm a bit of a low baller.
|
# ? Jun 12, 2016 20:49 |

I'd agree on the ~$3k assessment for a pretty good deal. I bought my 2003 R6 for $1800 and I will end up having about $2800 in it all said and done. That covers rearsets, clipons, race fairings + stay, steering damper, tuned PC3, quickshifter, fork internals, shock internals, all case covers replaced with ones with sliders, etc etc. That would separate mine and that bike by a slipper clutch and Brembo master which are another $1k at new prices or maybe $500-600 if you're patient. Go look at it, say you don't want the street poo poo and ask to do $3k. Figure $3200. I'm not great at negotiating because I don't have patience over a couple hundred dollars versus dealing with everyone that flakes or tries to list poo poo that is terrible.

Pmuch this. a good guide to buying things that are over 10 years old... does it run? if so > $1000 is it fuel injected? if so > $1500 is it well maintained? (regularly serviced, and doesn't need poo poo like tires and chain, maybe an oil change and air filter) if so > $2000 Then you start adding the brand, engine, and desirability tax... Which in this case, isn't much. I don't usually add points for aftermarket poo poo unless I also get the stock poo poo along with it. It's pretty hard to sell a bike without the things it needs to run. That particular bike is not street legal, and considering that mileage, it probably never was. If it was... then it wasn't ridden very often, which is also a bad sign. I'm willing to bet it was 'ridden hard and put away wet' for the majority of those miles, then sat idle for long periods of time. If it's got a title, $3200 MAX I'd shoot for $3000
|
# ? Jun 13, 2016 19:10 |

He says it can be streetable so I'd assume it has a title. If it doesn't I wouldn't even buy the thing for $2000. Arizona made it so you can only get a title if you register a vehicle for the street, and registration requires insurance verification. My R6 has an open title because I don't want to pay the registration + insurance + title transfer fee for something that will never see the road. Pain in the balls. That really seems rather pricey for a 12 year old, unmaintained air cooled monster. I almost bought a Monster S4 that was in great shape for the wife at around that price but she didn't really care for how it rode. Now if it was an S4RS model... The work isn't bad to do though, just different from your usual valve adjustment. Oh and you tension the belts with a guitar tuner.

Belts I could do in the parking lot in 15 minutes with just a set of allen wrenches.(Tip on setting tension: a 5mm wrench will pass between the belt and tensioner with some slight effort, but a 6mm should't pass through easily at all) Valves are annoying because you need to gap two shims on each valve and do math to figure out the lifter gap. If that challenge is too intimidating cool, cheaper bikes for me.
