Dragon Quest 7 is a very episodic game, moreso than any other game in the series, and the streamlining for the 3DS version really helps make that more... workable, I guess? Like, if you put down the game for a month and come back to it, it makes it easier to figure out what you were supposed to be doing.

One Nation, Under God.
They did shorten the points requirements for most jobs, in some cases quite heavily.

The major change to the job system is that they redistributed all the skills and made it so the advanced class skills are exclusive to those classes and can't be freely swapped around, so you gotta specialise. They also gave the monster classes way more poo poo, including advanced skills that can be accessed from any class once unlocked.

I hope so because you could easily beat the game before mastering GodHand and long before unlocking the tier 3 caster class.

I reported the broken link and they gave me $10 in credit. You should report it again and maybe they'll do the same. Still not fixed as of right now, though.

Edit: Weird, under features and details it's clearly talking about Zelda: Twilight Princess.

It looks like the pre-order page for the physical version isn't quite up yet, even though the digital version for VII is and both versions of VIII are on display even though it's presumably coming quite a bit later. I would want a physical copy of VII even without the 20% prime discount, but that certainly doesn't hurt. I want to pre-order a cartridge of VII as soon as I can also, mostly because I am worried that there is going to be a very limited production and they will sell out.

In the ongoing saga of this broken page, I got in touch with Amazon again and they are aware of the problem. The guy I talked to this time actually added the physical version to my cart because he could reach the page even though I couldn't. So I pre-ordered both physical games.

I'm with you on wanting to get them ASAP. I just don't think SE has enough faith in the US market to make tons of these carts.

I beat Dragon Quest 4 today on my "catching up with the last 20 years of the series" campaign I've been on over the last several months.
I know Toriyama does all the character art for these games but I didn't know I was going to literally be fighting Cell as the final boss.
After like the 4th or 5th time I wailed on the dude and some new poo poo grew out of him I was just like "Really? When are you going to die already?"

Yeah. Is Healie the Healslime a recurring character in this trilogy or something? I've heard him mentioned so much over the years but he was just a sidekick character in like half a chapter, and I think maybe he appeared once later in human form? I thought there would be more.

If you're playing on the DS there's a bonus chapter where you get another character and a new final boss (who is basically the same as the original IIRC) and if I remember right it's pretty fun because the new character is very powerful.

Honestly Psaro continually anatomizing himself was probably one of the more unnerving final boss things I can remember and basically made the fight for me.

I have the mobile version, which is a port of the DS version. How do you get to the bonus chapter? It just asked if I wanted to save my clear data after the credits, and when I loaded the clear save I was at the church in Endor.

Don't get me wrong, it was great from a final boss standpoint, it was just like

"all right, I've cut his head off, now he's finally dea- NO WHAT IS GOING ON"
"okay, now I killed the face that came out of his stomach- WHY ARE NEW ARMS AND HEAD COMING OUT OF HIS ARM AND HEAD HOLES"

I think that's it, but you have you go on a quest to get some yggdrasil flowers or something to bring someone back to life, who you then take to the final boss and have things go down differently.

Anyone have a specific Power Saves device or Pro Action Replay they can point me to in order for me to unlock the online stuff for DQ9?

There's so many, and when I find one that I think works I read a review and see it only works on certain games. I figured someone here has done this, so just looking for what works.

It seems like the best way to go about that would be watching a speedrun and adapting the strats to be less risky, since I think the WR is single-digit hours?

That's not super helpful since I haven't looked at a leaderboard ever, but I know Highspirits over on Twitch runs it every so often (and every other DQ, which is why every so often) so if nothing else you could find an old run of his for inspiration.

e: to the above poster: If you have a flashcart or something you can download a save with all the content unlocked then use the two DSes to have your legitimate copy streetpass (it's not streetpass, I forget the name of the in-game feature that mimics it) the flashcart save and that unlocks the content on the legitimate copy. There may also be a way to trick your DS into connecting to a local wifi network that mimics NFC?

e2 to below: That might be! I was thinking of specifically the quests and not the patrons and the shop items, that's my bad.

In retrospect it's a really bad idea to have an immense amount of your single-player game's content tied to timed DLC.

I seem to recall that even when the servers were live you'd miss inn guests if you weren't checking DQVC constantly.

It looks like Amazon has their wires crossed regarding DQ VII and VIII. The digital version of VII is up for pre-order but the release date says 31 December 2016, which is what the always put when they don't have a semi-firm release date, and clicking on the link for the physical version still leads to the "Sorry!" page with pictures of large dogs on it. Meanwhile, both versions of VII are available for pre-order with the release date of 16 September. I honestly think that they confused one for the other.

I'm getting really tired of social/multiplayer aspects being shoehorned into single-player games, and making it so that content will be inaccessible later due to natural obsolescence is just twisting the knife.

I know many of you probably don't care about speedruns, but within four hours last night nescardinality broke his own DQ1 NES world record (down to 45 minutes), then broke it again down to 42:21, where it may sit for a while.

Highlights: It uses the RNG manipulation from the TAS in real time to beat the Dragonlord at level 7 (real runs can maybe do it at 17 in ~5:15ish) by attacking for 1 and casting a bunch of Hurts while the Dragonlord stays asleep the entire fight. The entire drat thing is a highlight, honestly. It's marvelous to see the game be so broken.
