If I had to guess the next reset point, it hasn't been set yet. Too much potential drama in everything that's happened so far to let it go out the window the first time Subaru gets decapitated for giving the girl a poisoned appa or whatever-the-heck does him in.

Eh with the potential fuckups he's doing already, he will have a reset point set some time here. My guess is right when receiving the bag of appas.

He's causing Emilia to massively distrust him by apparently aligning himself with princess tsundere pants, to the point that she makes him stay home after not explaining himself the first time only to have him stroll into the castle as part of her entourage. That's the big one, but I'm sure a lot of the little things will come back to bite him like antagonizing Sir Kissy Hands for no real reason.

Yeah this was a huge error and it'll be interesting if he doesn't get to roll this one back after dying.

Still, I have to respect Subaru's determination to force himself into the court scenario. Emilia does tend to treat him as a child or a pet, but it's not irrational on her part because she assumes he's pretty much well-meaning but useless. He knows that he is the ultimate shield for her and that he can afford to be reckless with his life but his tragedy is that he can't convey that to her.

It's more that He tries to insert himself in every facet of her life and decides she can't handle anything by herself while also acting like a kid around her, so she both can't trust him to do basic stuff and not betray her because he refuses to listen when she talks to him but also can't trust him about big things because he WILL try to be 'the man in her life' even when it comes to things like "I am currently being audited to be king".

So, yeah, I don't have much sympathy for him about that at all.

Speaking of, any literature goons good at symbolism?

Gotta be some deliberate cinematography here.

Only thing I got is that maybe the light is meant to illuminate them as good people. To Subaru's perspective Emilia might as well be heaven sent to be his muse and guide, ala Beatrice to Dante from the Divine Comedy. So Chosen Undead-kun being placed to her immediate right should imply symbolically that he is probably similarly "good" and can be trusted. Perhaps He's Virgil?

On the other hand they both seem to, while realistically shaded and is probably nothing I can't help but feel it suggests "The light leaves them shrouded in darkness" if that makes sense. Like what may appear good may in fact hide darkness inside; I only think this as knowing that the Witch is a half elf like Emilia and that since Subaru has a clear connection to the Witch and these things must be related.

But I only took 1 creative writing course and I don't remember anything from any of my previous literature courses so that's all I got.

Yeah while Subaru's antics make him sympathetic on putting a front from his pain and PTSD, it also kinds of shows that he's still an immature brat with not social mores. I seriously think he's going to try to hard head his way through some political event and cause a huge falling out between the candidates, and ultimately make Emilia just completely tired of his idiocy. His methods of trial and error work in a life or death situation, but he's too impulsive and short sighted when it comes to a very important event concerning becoming a literal head of a country.

I think though the point of Subaru's ability here is being able to absorb a lot of information to help Emilia navigate the political waters. Going by the theme so far, we can probably assume the four candidates are all likely good people after a fashion, but probably have itchy trigger fingers because maybe they all assume all the other candidates are out to get them? If the way Rem and Ram acted regarding him is any indication, a stranger, they gotta be generally more paranoid about their actual rivals right? Emilia in particular seemed like she was freaking out.

So maybe we have a Danganronpa sorta situation where they feel compelled to kill people because of miscommunications, the question is whether Subaru being an idiot precipitates this or if his idiocy and powers ultimately is what lets him keep them from killing each other?

Going by the fan theory that Subaru is the dragon and is compelled to protect the realm/royal family I think the plot maybe his goal is to keep the candidates from killing each other?

Subaru made a very typical male mistake in utterly breaking his promise to Emilia. I actually hope the save point is after this mistake so Subaru can learn to deal with this and understand how much it hurts to the one you've lied to. Would certainly make it interesting.

However, I hear rumbles that Re:Zero is going to be more despair and suffering for Subaru so maybe I should be hoping Subaru gets a break.

Having not read LN/Web novels, I don't have any context for this, but, according to a guy on reddit who went to a talk given by the producers , this cour will be dedicated entirely to the third arc.

To date, each arc has had a single reset point, so it'll be interesting to see how the show structures itself going forward.

Supposedly arc 3 takes up 6 volumes of the light novels, so we'll be going down to 2 episodes per book as opposed to the rate of 3 eps / vol we've had up to this point. Bit worried about how much they'll need to skip.

2 episodes/book is worrying, but they've done a good job so far and I was planning to read the books afterward anyway so this could work, hopefully.

Holy poo poo.

That was the most savage thing that has happened to Subaru the entire show And the worst thing is that he lived through it.

I'm gonna guess that he doesn't get to reset any of this.

That aside, I appreciate the realistically terrible political platforms most of these candidates are pushing. That Felt has some good ideas and I'm thinking I might join her party, but what if she's just a puppet for entrenched interests?

Emilia's are arguably the most altruistic are also the most likely to be undercut by whatever scheme Eminem is cooking with regards to the all powerful mythological creature that allegedly protects their Kingdom from harm.

Is this what they mean by Subaru suffering? I want out now. :(

So Subaru basically developed this idealized version of Emilia to the point that he increasingly disregarded Emilia's own agency and desires, breaking her trust due to his time leap shenanigans finally putting his one sided character interactions and development with everyone to it's breaking point? Is this what happened did I understand it correctly?

If so, it's interesting how this show seems to have a solid understanding of people and realistically what the breaking points for such a premise are and rolling with it.

madmac
Jun 22, 2010
I thought it was very well done. After a while the fun crazy person who knows things you never told them and is always obliquely referring to how close you are because of things that never happened slowly edges from endearing to creepy.

And while Subaru's an idiot, it's not entirely his fault that he's known everyone 6 times longer than they've known him and his sanity is fraying at the edges from all the resets and being physically unable to keep all the time loops mentally separated after a while.

It's probably true that this is only the tip of his suffering in this arc though, this is gonna be rough.

CrashScreen
Nov 11, 2012

That was actually kind of painful to watch, but I'm also glad that the show seems to be paying attention to the fact that he's spent more time and become more intimate with the others than they could have with him. I honestly didn't expect that would play a role at all, at least not anytime soon.

I still feel like he's an idiot for breaking the promise. I knew that'd come back to haunt him, but I can't really blame him after all the stuff he's been through to even survive to this point. The world has been six times more dangerous for him than it has been with them. I feel pretty bad for him. Not too sure if I can say I'm looking forward to more of this arc or not. It's really rough already.

That was probably my favourite episode yet! Proper good stuff, here. Getting increasingly curious as to where the reset point's going to be this arc. After all, put it reasonably early on and it won't be hard for him to gently caress up orders of magnitude less badly than he did here. If it's at some point after this episode though, I really struggle to see how he's going to sort things out. Additionally, I wonder if there's actually going to be much violence this arc, or if it's going to mostly be about Subaru learning to fumble his way through a political minefield he knows nothing about. Eager for more, in any case.

Also this episode: the most brutal use of a title card I've ever seen, so far as I remember.
