Is it the time he wrote a novel about the tech industry and purposefully didn't research it? His charities that help expose inner city kids to writing? The many terrible pieces published by McSweeney's?

eggers is not terribly special. i don't find him unreadable like some people, but i'm not thrilled by anything he does either. actually enjoyed his dialogue-only book And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? more than his other stuff

The opening chapter is good. There is enough subterfuge and murder and other excitement to make reading it a fun experience. Andreas Wolf is a fascinating character. It's not perfect and Franzen thinks he knows more than he does about young people, but it's a solid book. Nowhere close to as good as Freedom or Corrections. My favorite is Freedom.

What does interest me about Franzen is that the younger his characters are, the more unrealistic and parodic their life situations. The son in Freedom. Pip and her roommates. His older characters are the most fully human, whereas his younger ones are always defined by strange characterterisitcs and find themselves in highly strange businesses/situations

It started off okay, but i found the book horribly muddled, like on one hand he's trying to make this point by drawing comparisons between socialism and social media or whatever which i don't feel was very well fleshed out or overshadowed by wolf's character, on the other he's telling this slow reveal story about the breakdown of puritys parents relationship which he NEVER loving FINISHES. Where was anabelles chapter? Every character gets a voice except for anabelle. That really made me mad

Franzen can't write women. The main character in freedom was like a cardboard cutout she was so lifeless. Same with Purity and he completely gave up on Anabelle cuz he knew he wasnt up to the task

He's godawful, although that should have been pretty obvious if he's writing articles about Donald Trump for the guardian.

Hey guys
Any thoughts on the works of Sarah Kane? Just read through her collected works, and 4.48 Psychosis has to be the one of the most depressing things I've ever read.

I don't think Crave or 4.48 stand up today as plays. I saw a few productions of them and they are pretty joyless experiences especially if you compare them to shorter Beckett. It could've been the production though, I'm not sure. There are a couple gems in Crave's script at least when the one characters talks about having one of her mother's memories while she was in the womb.

Her early work is a great resurgence of Angry Young (Wo)Men plays. Blasted and Cleansed I think have a totally distinct style and voice. Phaedra's Love is silly. Also she is really out of fashion which is a shame because I've never seen Blasted or Cleansed live.

Personally, I love Kane. I've only seen Cleansed live (it was a pretty bad production) but I've read most of her plays. Blasted is pure genius from start to finish. I think a big problem with her plays is because, as was par for the course of In-Yer-Face Theatre, the plays have a lot of spectacle and memorable visual horrors, directors tend to ignore the really brilliant brutal poetry in the dialogue and the ludicrously strong thematic and character work that is constantly under the surface of her plays. Directors end up playing the big moments and so all those little moments just get lost in the shuffle.

On Dave Eggers—some people got together to start an entire literary magazine because they despise Dave Eggers and keep returning to mock him. I love McSweeney's, but they've got a point about The Believer's style of book reviews and Eggers's large personal following among immature morons. Eggers's genial anti-elitism, which I find charming in his ordinary nonfiction writing, morphs in the hands of many, many lesser writers into a cloying, syrupy literary criticism that I can't stand.

Actually I think you'll find the most weighted criticism is the fact that his name is 'eggers.' say that a few times. Egg. Egger. Eggor. Eggar. Eggman.

I've only ever read A Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius and the only memory I have of it is that I really wanted to sympathise with Eggers over what happened to him and his family, but I still thought he was a massive tit and I just wanted to slap him after every few paragraphs.

Reading this thread is like that feel u get when you meet a new person, are struggling for things 2 talk about, and let slip that you like to read books. That is something you should def never do. Do not tell ppl in contemporary america that you like to read, because then they'll spend 20 minutes explaining the plot of the divergent young adult series for children or say other GBS things.
