It's fun in a holodeck-Paintball sort of way. I totally get what everyone says about the graphics, but when all the Vive tracks are your hands and head, portraying everyone as a vertical cylinder with a helmet actually works great for hitboxes. It's not like they could really represent you leaning your head out from behind cover while your body stays in place, anyways.

Switched my VR box to WiFi, discovered that I get packet loss when I launch SteamVR. I figure this is because of Bluetooth, so I switch over to 5GHz, and still, launching SteamVR immediately causes packet loss and massive jitter. Nothing on the Vive uses 5GHz does it? Windows 10, up to date drivers and OS and graphics drivers. IPV4 literally the only protocol enabled on the adapter.

I mean, battledome probably isn't OP material right now, but the project as a whole is like 2-3 weeks old I think? Pretty sure all the guns are just random poo poo off of unity asset store or something, and the maps a bunch of cubes and rectangles thrown around. But the gameplay is genuinely epic, it's just so good it's silly. When/if the guy starts adding more content, this will probably be the best thing on vive outside simulators for me.

Low spec pc runs project cars on the vive wonderfully. I've got my whole little simulator / wheel setup going and it's amazing. Low rez is apparent on the long straights but it's still a blast to play. After half an hour on the ring I hit a stretch where the sun was in my eyes and tried to block it with my hand. We need gloves with ir trackers on them asap.

I had a friend playing Budget Cuts and at one point he was in a hurry to take out a bot, and he fumbled and dropped a throwing knife. It worked so well. (He never bumped his head against the floor, though- he'd just teleport straight down from the ceiling without scouting.)

So my interference investigation leads me to believe that the Vive Bluetooth transmitter is saturating the receiver of the WiFi adapter, which shares antennas between the 2.4 and 5GHz bands. Increasing separation between the devices helped, but not entirely. I'll have to find a better place to stick the breakout box. Either that or run an Ethernet cable to the router or get some cables to move the WiFi antennas.

It basically feels like im playin' legos standing over my toys as a kid I just found today that in Pool Nation VR you can raise the table height. Arrow keys on the keyboard? What is a keeeey-board? I was having serious problems making shots of any modicum of difficulty because I'd either have to hold a deep bow while trying to shoot or half squat. I'm 6'1" and my legs pretty much go all the way up. Now that I can just stand erect like a homo sapien I've finally been able to beat the Level 1 AI I watched someone Twitch stream Out of Ammo and after 15 minutes I thought, well this game sure looks cool but I'd hate to be looking at my feet the whole time. Heading to steam to buy now! I'll tell you, I might pick up a game or two each steam summer / winter sale and maybe buy one other game a year but I have been on a steam spending spree since I got the Vive. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is also a great game to play with friends over, even without VR. Highly recommend that for people who would normally play board games with friends.

The great thing about the vive wands as guns is you can rest the upper ring part on your wrist to give yourself a lot of stability. Slap the laser sight on top of that and I'm headshotting stuff as soon as it spawns. I'm looking forward to what the full game adds.

Just spent another 2 hours in Battle Dome. It really is just super fun. I snuck in behind the enemy lines by going around the outside and then just started shotgunning fools in the head (and also died a bunch, but my teammates used the sneak area to keep jumping forward so I still helped!) I also spent a while redecorating. It's probably silly, but my favorite thing to do so far is just sitting back and going through all the personal space scenes building the perfect combination of playspace/background/controller/camera objects.

I use the portal environment with the upper atmosphere type background, it's pretty nice. I feel sorta inspired putting it on now, the default environment was kind of depressing.

I got the rift-portal-thing background and the sword-in-ground-with-pillars environment. They work quite well together, but the environment isn't actually that great and I want something else that works better. Most of the environments are pretty bad. The portal one is rather nice though.

Nah it's a PCIx card. Receiver saturation is essentially when the input signal causes clipping. Any signal that gets past the front end filter can cause saturation, and because WiFi cards use both 2.4 and 5GHz, the filter permits both of those bands. Vive's Bluetooth is essentially deafening my card. The easiest solution to this problem is to add separation between the antennas. (Other solutions really aren't applicable here unless you want to shell out a couple thousand for a cavity filter.) I'll bring a spectrum analyzer home tonight just to make sure it's not USB3. If it is, cables to extend the WiFi antennas will help.

I was using that portal.sky combo for a while too but wasn't a huge fan as the raised platform bits were right at head height when I was sitting at my desk outside of the roomscale play area. I now use the mario 64 castle, it's fantastic. also fitting as I am of the opinion the vive is the most next-level gaming has been since mario 64.

Storytime: A few years back I had a group project for one of my classes that amounted to "develop a product and project plan utilizing the given technology (a pico projector in this case)". Being the nerds that we were my group decided to focus on a modular in-place upgradable game console/PC; missing the point entirely that the focus should be on the project plan. Continuing down the nerd hole, we decided to contact a group that was rumored to be developing a console; VALVe software (this was a bit before Steamboxes/machines were announced). I sent ol' Gabe a email pleading for him to assist some poor undergrads and surprisingly he hooked us up with an engineer with the company. One who worked on and specialized in pico projectors and optics; literally the most qualified person in existence for what we were doing. We ended up getting a C on that project. So while "working" yesterday I read through this article that had a picture of an early prototype that utilized pico projector tech. So I reach out to the fellow we talked to before and turns out he is actively involved in the Vive's hardware development and apparently designed the lenses used in the headset. Ain't that some poo poo?

Since I didn't "really have any specific questions that don't include the number 3" for him I asked for some anecdotes on developing/prototyping headsets. Apparently most if not all existing research from back in the day was useless due to standards of quality at the time. Such as the difference between 250 and 150 MS being fairly unimportant. I'd be lying if I said I understood half of what he said, but it was interesting to say the absolute least. Quoth the engineer, "No, we haven’t announced anything about Ricochet 2." Yes, I totally asked him about a Ricochet sequel during a phone interview with him. Thankfully he found it amusing.

This is probably a touchy subject but I think it's worth asking anyway, because I'm sure a fair few people at least either openly or secretly care about this: what's the VR porn situation like? Is there a certain "must buy" title out there? What does it offer that regular porn doesn't?

There seems to be an influx of content to some degree, but damned if I could get one of the proprietary recommended players to work or figure out how to get Bigscreen to work with it. Then again I've had poor luck getting anything non steam launched to work so far.

Is there a certain "must buy" title out there? What does it offer that regular porn doesn't? I think the most common used porn is stuff like badoinkvr or virtualrealporn. But its just 180° 3D video usually filmed from the viewpoint of the man (obviously). So you get some 3D tits in your face and can look around but theres no positional tracking or anything. At least virtualrealporn has one free full video you can just download to give it a try. And Pornhub obviously has a VR category now which is mostly trailers for longer videos. Virtual Desktop is an easy video player for that sort of stuff as long as you dont mind your steam friends noticing that you only use it for five minutes before playing something else... I dont know whats the situation on interactive stuff. Seems to be mostly anime and i dont care about that.

I think there's an anime game or two that support VR, and outside Japanese stuff I haven't really heard anything at all yet. As for porn... It's still boobs, but this time they're in your face. That's about the only thing I can say to describe the difference.

QuiVr Demo Trip Report Name: 1/10. Generally it's super buggy and nowhere near playable but it's a nice proof of concept. Instead of controllers you see virtual hands which is interesting in concept but visually hideous in execution. You place your quiver wherever you want on your body which again is an interesting decision, however since it's actually attached to the headset there aren't many good places to put it. For example, if you attach it to your waist and then lean forward over a wall it's not actually on your waist where you left it – it's suspended a foot in the air behind your back. Suddenly you can't find your arrows and you're not sure why. I had the best luck attaching it to the side of my head on the very edge of my peripheral vision so I could see where to get a new arrow. Pulling out an arrow, nocking and shooting feels pretty good but a little strange if you're used to playing Longbow. I accidentally switched hands with the bow dozens of times when I'd try to nock with no arrow in my hand. Unfortunately past that it's just a bunch of bugs. Before you place the quiver on your body you can only grab it using the grip buttons, however once you've placed it you can grab it with both the grip buttons and the trigger (which is what you use to grab an arrow), so about half the time you try to get an arrow you actually get the quiver. Opening the menu to spawn a mob crashes the game, so I can't really comment on the gameplay. Shai-Hulud posted:Its pretty much just a techdemo. As far as i can tell all you can do is stand around and shoot some arrows at balls or spawn in some stationary enemys to shoot. This is accurate.
