They did it. They actually went ahead and did it. May god have mercy on our souls. NHL awards an expansion franchise to to Las Vegas, set to start playing in the 2017-2018 season. This will be the 31st club in the NHL, and the first expansion franchise since good ol' Y2K. We all know the league should have stopped expanding in the 1920s, but here we are.. Discuss all your clever potential names here. some kinda jackal fucked around with this message at 22:48 on Jun 22, 2016 |

So what are the odds they name themselves the Knights and wear T-Mobile purple or magenta or whatever.

One of the things I like best about expansion is how it sometimes gives guys a new lease on life. Should be interesting who this applies to in this case.

Local news people built up the press conference by saying by Black Knights over and over again and trying to make it seem less awkward. Then Foley got to the podium and deliberately said "[we] have no name yet." ABC affiliate just now says Foley will submit a list of names to the BoG and they'll select some. He wants to sell jerseys by the start of the coming season.

Some potential talking points: - Why Vegas owns. - Why Vegas is bad. - How you spent a weekend here poo poo-faced years ago so you definitely know the team will fail and no one will like it. - How we're going to take bad players and aging vets and make them good and stomp all over your bad teams. - How Seattle and QC loving suck and don't deserve anything good. I've been living here since I was 4 and I turn 28 next week. I've literally waited my whole life for a pro sports team to call my own

I didn't see anything in the rules that said you can't bribe/threaten the new GM to prevent him from taking your guys like the last expansions so I'm assuming that's how it will go down for most of the guys who are too painful to part with. "You can have a 4th or we'll never trade with you again and I'll get all my friends to blackball you" What I'm saying is enjoy your captain Dustin Brown and the MacDonald - Sbisa pairing

If you would like to, you can play around on General Fanager's expansion tool. Decent way to guess who will be unprotected, what the expansion team might look like, etc. It's set up to automatically protect players who have to be protected because of NMC so you don't even need to worry about that. http://www.generalfanager.com/teams/expansion Edit: Las Vegas will be bad, but it looks like they'll be able to ice a roster that's at least sort of competitive, there will likely be some pretty decent players and prospects left unprotected. For example: one of Vatanen, Fowler, or Lindholm will be unprotected assuming the Ducks can't find a way to jettison Bieksa Jamwad Hilder fucked around with this message at 23:38 on Jun 22, 2016 |

It makes me worried that the annual Frozen Fury will probably end. Like congrats to everyone in Vegas, but drat. Guess we'll have to try and play an exhibition game in a different hockey-less desert. Like Arizona.

JawKnee posted:goodbye afternoon I lied about the Ducks, I forgot you can choose to protect 8 skaters total instead of 7 forwards, 3 defense. However, that means if the Ducks protect all three of Lindholm, Vatanen, and Fowler (plus Bieksa), they can only protect 1 more forward since Perry, Getzlaf, and Kesler all have NMC. So they'd lose a good young player like Silfverberg, Rakell, or Pirri. There are a few other teams in similar positions due to the NMC they've got like Chicago, Columbus, Minnesota, and Pittsburgh. Going with another desert team instead of a Canadian city for expansion is the biggest Bettman move imaginable. Though Vegas has a much better ownership and arena situation than Phoenix and I'll watch a game there for sure.

Shame that in 20-30 years Vegas will be an empty husk of a city after they use up all the fresh groundwater/lake mead for lawns and golf courses. Yeah the water rights for the Colorado river are totally hosed. I don't know where I'll be in 20-30 years but I know where I'll be opening day 2017 motherfuckers!!
