On the bright side, the Vegas team will probably still be better than the Leafs and Oilers.

My hot take is that its possible Vegas doesn't work out but its a huge victory for the NHL to get into that market before the NBA did, because if it does work out it'll be a massive success.

Contract all teams south of the 49th. They don't truly understand hockey anyway. Rebuild the league the way Gord intended.

they'd be sharing a name with both an AHL and OHL club; guess there's nothing wrong with that, but I figured they'd try to distinguish the brand

Kinda curious how bad the Vegas team will end up being in their first season. With the expansion rules the way they are, they're pretty much guaranteed to get a halfway decent goalie, and there might be some other teams that are willing to try to offload players that are still good but are vastly overpaid.

Vegas will be in a conference with Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Anaheim. They'll be really bad but probably end up with more points than you'd otherwise expect.

As a Pens fan I really want to say "of course don't be an idiot" but truthfully it's hard to give an emphatic yes. They were broke and about to move when they got Mario, and they were broke and about to move when they got Crosby. Of course they went bankrupt WHILE THEY HAD JAGR AND SOMETIMES LEMIEUX and were still a high seed every year, and Lemieux ended up with a big stake in the team because when it filed for bankruptcy he was a major creditor from years of unpaid salary. So a lot of it was just that previous ownership was spectacularly incompetent. They were selling seats those years. I think in Pittsburgh there's always going to be a problem where when the team is bad things will get real bad because most of the city doesn't really begin to pay attention to hockey until after football season is over, and if the Penguins are out of serious contention by then, no one but the real diehards will even give them a glance.

An expansion draft is going to be pretty different than the last one for two reasons: -The salary cap and floor. The new team needs to spend 55m, and competitive teams might want out of the later years of a big, long contract (i.e. Rick Nash) -Teams are deeper than two lines now. Bottom six are no longer just "checking lines" where guys who aren't good get put, and the decline of the goon has led to more opportunity for the second/third line tweeners who were once top-six-or-bust.

all the fans of cap strapped teams with bad contracts are going to be really disappointed when vegas picks a player who is actually decent instead of the lovely guy on a $5 million multiyear contract and on top of that causes the salary cap to stagnate or even drop as hockey related revenue is now split 31 ways instead of 30
