I feel like we quadruple hosed Scotland

1) persuaded them to stay in a referendum with a historically high turnout

2) vote brexit despite a remain Scottish vote (and a bad turnout which was their own drat fault)

3) disintegrate the EU in a chain reaction of EU referendums around the continent

4) westminster waits until EU shits itself completely before giving in to Scottish referendum demands. Scotland votes to stay again cos there's barely an EU left to join.

Undead Hippo posted:

I'm in shock. And I'm remembering all the little moments over the campaign, and thinking I should have done more.

"I read a story about a Romanian pedophile, came over here, nobody knew he was here until after he'd done it. No border controls. I can't risk that. I've got kids."
I heard that yesterday. And I shook my head, and didn't say anything. People's family's are an emotive topic and I didn't want to get into all the things that were wrong with that sentiment. A foreign pedophile, in the country without official oversight, raping a child? Sounds incredibly horrible. The likelihood of it happening? Basically non existent.

"Nobody listens to us, I'm voting out so that they finally have to take notice"
Is another one that I heard. A deep despair, because everything is so bad you just need to strike out. To do damage. It's a logic pattern that comes up in victims of abuse. I can sympathise... but it's also horrendous. I didn't say anything to that one either.

And then I just get sad. I think of my own life. Of the people I know from Europe who have been an enormous positive influence on my life. A boss at my last job. A lecturer at my university. And so many friends, acquaintances, colleagues. And I think that the vast blob of people voting remain didn't have this. They didn't have positive associations with people from Europe. They saw them as threats. As enemies to their happiness. And what that says about their lives and social circles is depressing. That they are insular, closed off groups without people coming in from outside.

don't worry about it there's nothing you could have done differently were just molecules caught up in the giant waves of public racialist feeling

Haha no, most people with a doctorate don't know poo poo, maybe you met too few or maybe you would change your mind if you got one yourself and met your peers in the field that you're interested in. BTW don't get your investment advice from your economist friend, holy poo poo.

The key part to getting a doctorate is realizing yourself how little you know about poo poo, IMO

If you have a doctorate and think you are hot poo poo who understands your whole field perfectly, you are a moron.

I wonder what would have happened if Scotland had left. Dave would have been The PM Who Killed The Union, maybe he would have resigned. Maybe the referendum could have been avoided?
