In this case I think it's that he's holding up consistency in a value, albeit in a somewhat absurd way: that is, some people on the left dislike neoliberalism, but also dislike Brexit; because neoliberals dislike Brexit, these lefties are inconsistent - because, I suppose, if you dislike one thing you should like anything that is different from it in any way. I will promptly use this principle to imply that St_Rev is a full-on vulgar Stormfront Nazi, rather than the sophisticated Nazi he plays at.

Ironically, I just read a massive article supporting Brexit from a left-wing perspective: http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/03/11/exit-left-the-socialist-case-for-britain-leaving-the-eu The main argument is that the EU is a neoliberal project.

But it's a neoliberal project among first world nations with relatively decent standards of living and regulatory environments. It doesn't really push a race to the bottom the same way as free trade with your Chinas or your Bangladeshes out there, nor an overconsumptive neocolonial raw material extraction like elsewhere in the third world. Faulting something merely for being neoliberal is kinda a genetic fallacy.

The UK is/was neoliberal as gently caress without the EU, and shows no signs of wanting to head in intelligent directions socially or economically. You have to be a certain kind of fool to view Brexit as an escape from neoliberalism. Possibly the equivalent of someone who didn't believe there were WMDs in Iraq but thought it would be a wise thing to invade anyway.

For next time a rationalist claims absolutely nobody believes in Roko's Basilisk, and especially anything to do with basilisks and donations to MIRI. It's self-reported therefore poo poo for survey or percentage purposes, but does constitute multiple people from LessWrong and diaspora standing up and saying "Yes, I believe in and am worried by the Basilisk" and "I have donated money to MIRI because of it."

One of the replies to nostalgebraist's post about opting out of the latest mini-drama on Rationalist Tumblr was this gem defending theunitofcaring: divabot's brought this up elsewhere, but Rationalist Tumblr often uses the same bad social justice strawman logic they accuse SJWs of. (Viz aggressively deploying membership within an oppressed group as a shield to negate or turnabout all possible criticism.) And for the record, I'm Jewish, and I still think picking a username in direct reference to the idea that money is the sum of all priorities doesn't cast her in a particularly good light. But don't mind me, just a self-hating autistic Jew here.

are we allowed to post from That Place because https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2k2o0s/why_do_so_many_prominent_sa_goons_adhere_to_the/ quote:SJW ideology fills a religion-shaped hole, in a world where religion (with thanks to scientific advancement and education) is less and less relevant. It has the same "chosen one" feeling as religion (you are one of the select few who truly 'sees' the world as it is (false consciousness etc)) but it also massages the ego, in that it's wrapped up in a thin veneer of intellectualism. It's not intellectual in any way, of course, but since academia as a whole is considered to be an intellectual arena, and humanities departments are the breeding-ground of SJW ideology - if you are particularly vulnerable to the cognitive bias that is the Dunning-Kruger effect (as many of these people seem to be) then SJW ideology can make you feel very important and intelligent indeed. theres simply not enough irony in this post BornAPoorBlkChild has a new favorite as of 01:04 on Jun 26, 2016 |
