Actual katanas are so drat fragile that they actually require special training to use so you don't just break them when you cut something (the folding doesn't actually make them durable against shear forces against the grain).

I think the fragility of the katana is a bit overstated, but swords can and do break in normal use, not to mention when you slam them into the equivalent of an oversized, upright elephant at 50 miles per hour.

Due to their large size, shooting them with bullets or cannonballs to be the equivalent of tossing a pebble or sand at someone, a minor bruise at best. The blades let you cut through a crucial weak point and kill them. The skin is still quite thick though and the blades have to be designed to be light weight in order to be easy to use in the air while you're zipping around all Spider-Man-like, meaning you always carry around multiples. Why yes, the military in Attack on Titan has a high death rate. They burned through usable adults a while ago and decided to start using teenagers instead! The ridiculous part of all this is they have the technology to produce things like chainshot (which could in theory cut through the vulnerable part) or just straight up explosive shot to blow the monsters to pieces. Instead they invest in swords and gas powered mobility gear.

The monsters also have regenerative powers. So if they aren't killed outright by a cannon shot, they just keep on trucking. I'm sure that the official reasoning is that the swords and 3D maneuver gear allows them to be much more precise, but this is manga/anime. It's all about what looks cool and would make for a sweet action sequence.

The exacto-swords are basically replaced with explosive spears, for example. Anyways, post fanart while you talk about anime, ok
