Yeah, I was actually satisfied with this month's issue. It's almost like things might actually happen or change in an interesting way. I wouldn't speculate if it's "going to be misery porn forever" though.

How would you feel about a serialized post-apocalyptic Pokemon story from Kieron Gillen?

Synthbuttrange
May 6, 2007

Its an anthology, so it depends on how much you get out of the individual stories. Moore does the title story, which revolves around a nightmarish cinema for all involved, viewers and actors. Ennis is doing a cops working spooky stuff beat, i.e. vampires and frankysteins. Kieron is mentioned. There's a kaiju attack one. The only one I'm not sold on is the american civil war but one side has giant mutant ants.

This wasn't bad. I don't have the Tales from the Darkside TV show as a reference, but it feels very twilight zone-y but with more of a horror tinge. The first issue was a stand-alone story, with the next two being a two parter.

Most exciting thing about it was the ad in the back:

Tokyo Ghost is gorgeous and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Remender is really good at pairing with amazing artists.

I love all the stuff you mention except Low - I have the first trade and I feel like it was gorgeous art but the worldbuilding and characters felt like it was a little too mise en scene and wound up feeling goofy and disconnected, like I didn't know / care about any relationships between characters/events/locations/etc.

UNDERGROUND DIONYSUS KISS STORY PARTY XXVIII After Party

Okay, that's a lie. There's no actual after party. It's more of a party in “We're playing World of Warcraft and we're off to beat up a dragon” way than anything anyone I'd actually enjoy doing in 2014.

Morrigan has just turned into Badb, and made a hissing noise at me for writing that. I didn't mean it like that. Now she's telling me to hurry up, but she's not exactly making me relax. I didn't know that Crows could hiss, but BREAKING NEWS! it is not a relaxing noise.

Cut to the chase. I need your help. Anyone on this mailing list around London and can get to Valhalla in the next half hour or so? This is to you. Everyone else, get back to bed or get back to whatever you were doing.

I've already got the XVIII crowd with me, except those who dropped out. More came than I thought which... I dunno. I'm humbled. Sometimes it feels like I'm giving too much, but this just shows that you give, and stuff comes back. Or maybe everyone just wants to feel like a superhero for once. I dunno.

I'm getting off point: we need to storm our way into Valhalla and need every hand we can get. And who has more hands than the dancefloor that marches like a man?

This could be dangerous. How dangerous? I don't know. But you have to believe me, this is life and death. If we don't pull this off, I'm pretty sure... okay, I don't want to write it. Writing makes it real, and making it real may stop me. I'm basically running on autopilot here, guys. Well, autopilot and energy drinks.

It's odd. It's like a state of grace. Every step I'm making feels right. We have to do this. That makes it easier? The choice has been removed. There's only action. It's like dancing, and step follows step follows step.

Okay, I'm getting spacey and Morrigan is doing growly beakface.

So – storming a place full of gods. I can't promise you'll be fine, but... we do have an edge. You know my parties? Ever noticed what doesn't happen there? Pain. No-one gets hurt. People fall over and there's no bruises. No sprains even. That's me. That's what I give you when you're in my crowd. I promise, I won't take it too far when we go in. If it looks like something is going to hurt any of you, and I'll pull out. You're all precious.

I'm not into violence. But i'm into life, and sometimes you got to fight for your right to party. We want the night to last forever and have something happy in it. If we don't do something quickly, this night ends for a little girl and there's nothing happy any more.

Hope to see some of you soon, and see everyone else soon after that. But if I don't? I love you all.
Peace out.

Dio.

I read through the first volume of Incorruptible on comixology unlimited. It felt kind of okay but didn't draw me in nearly as much as Irredeemable. Does it pick up or am I better off dropping it?

A large part of why I'm not big on it may be because the concept of Jailbait as a character sort of creeps me out.

Punkin Spunkin
Jan 1, 2010
I dropped it after the first issue myself. The thing is, I was never as high on Irredeemable as some people apparently maybe (or maybe not) were. It was decent cheesy fun, but I'm not sure why anyone would think I'd want to read a series about a dude from within the Irredeemable universe who I barely ever saw in Irredeemable. It's not like the universe you created is so vibrant and original that I'm like BOY HOWDY WOULD I LIKE A SERIES ABOUT THIS ONE GUY. Like I'd rather have a Mobius series if anything not that I'd read that either.

and yeahhhhhh Jailbait....

Incorruptible felt weirdly disjointed. On second it was an antihero story, then it ended up as a semi post apocalyptic thing. Maybe the broader universe explains it, but i didn't read anything else.

Yeah this jump became really weird to me as well.

I like Incorruptible better than Irredeemable. Both of them go off the rails and gently caress things up before they're done, though.

I think it's partly because he's writing less autobiographically than in his OGNs. This looks like at least the first part of the series is going to be a murder mystery story, with fewer of the magical realism elements he normally sprinkles into his wholly self-done stuff. He needs to be really careful, though. Lottie is already treading a very fine line between '"girly" fashionista girls actually act this way' and 'Hollywood stereotypical flawed-but-in-a-cute/vulnerable-way'.

Horizon looks good, definitely glad I picked it up. Loved the artwork in the new Prophet EW, sad there is only one more issue.

I haven't gotten Island yet, but good to hear there is at least one good story in it. Zooniverse inclusion sounds like it was definitely Brandon Graham's love letter to his childhood, he might not have held the same standards for it being stand-alone and accessible as he does the other stories. (Although even his multiple warheads stuff would be vaguely better served by reading the earlier work)

Picked up the second issue of Darkside, its a two parter, and a bit more mellow than the first issue. It's not bad if you like pulpy "lovely ironic twist" style horror.

But her name is her concept? She keeps trying to get him to gently caress her and his response is "Not unless you've turned legal since we last spoke." Which comes with her constantly talking about how they used to gently caress and yes that's pretty drat creepy I think as a character concept. I guess if everyone is saying it's better than Irredeemable I'll try another volume, but it really didn't sell me on the first 4 issues.

On the other hand, Black Science might be my new favorite comic. The writing is spectacular and the art is just as good. I love everything about it.

How is it, not knowing a thing? Being at someone's mercy? Do you think you ever truly know god's plan? Or the other guy's? If he is a guy, that is? Imagine an anthill. Where every ant carries a chessboard. With an anthill on top of each chessboard...and ants on each anthill...carrying chessboards. This is what you are to me. Do you understand? I am the lack. I am the hand. I am the eternal voyeur. I am the GREAT MANIPULATOR. You were bad. You are good. Do the thing. Don't do that thing. You should and you shouldn't and and and--I am the voice inside your head telling you what you are, and will be, for eternity. I am the ant. I am the anthill. I am the chessboard you have moved on since before your first move. I am the image of the chessboard they have carved from the first tree. I am your logic and I am your emotion. I am the words and I am the gaps between. A girl needed to die by the hand of her father, in the blood of her friend. Who cares if she was the Antichrist or not? Who cares about her howling? I am your system. No-one cares.

I have been anticipating this release for a good while and the inner monologue kept me interested throughout the issue. It is definitely remaining on my pull list and I know that so far we don't exactly seem to know what is going on, for only revealing as much information as it did and keeping the story interesting shows promise.
