it's a sad day when even CIG's video editing is in pre-alpha. That's basically all they're set up to do in the first place.

The whole obvious lack of forethought with basic spacemens ships and cargo was my first serious 'waidaminit" moment. Sometime in 2013 I think. Every asset will need to be redesigned or scrapped if the game was to function beyond simple numbers going up and down in the UI. Then I remembered all too late Roberts was an idiot, and it all became clear I'd wasted my money.

Then I just held out for mod tools. Now that was a real pipe dream...

Looks like they just have a bunch of production staff and some line leads inefficiently spread around several studios.

That's like having a manufacturing company that is literally just a factory with a few production lines. How could you expect that to produce a highly complex product whose production processes will need to be developed and refined during production? They are completely missing a whole bunch of specialised staff you need to do that. You can't just promote some of you production line staff to leads and expect that to work as an alternative to doing it properly.

But those aren't just production lines, they are production PIPELINES! Better, faster, strong. They have the technology, they can rebuild i....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Also gravity generators. Hanger doors. Planets. Seamless transitions. Guns. AI. Drones. Internal programming.

Tons of awesome stuff in fact, and it's only around $25. What's Star Citizen got on that?

Seriously though why isn't cargo in the game, make a volume that is "cargo" that can dynamically fill using small, medium, and large boxes depending on a widgets' size except the boxes aren't actual representative boxes (not fidelitious I know) and are just extrapolated from how much poo poo you have in your inventory. gently caress loading and unloading nonsense. Make 3 different models of generic crate and task a few guys to knock it out by the end of the month.

Why isn't mining in the game, have a flag on certain materials' properties like mineable, ore types, etc so if a procedural asteroid has a certain material property you can mine it to produce ore widgets which are just numbers in a database etc etc like it's been four loving years and they don't have this stuff prototyped? Shoot a laser beam that returns a line trace and if the material is of a certain type it adds X widgets per second to your inventory. You could have a rough prototype done in an hour. AsteroidRockMaterial1 is flagged as mineable and PlatinumOre, my laser does a line trace by channel and the material returns mineable and PlatinumOre, 5 PlatinumOre is added to my ship's inventory per second which is a weapon attribute of the MiningLaser item. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Maybe UE4 has spoiled me with how simple it is and Cryengine is just that bad but I seriously am at a loss.

It boggles the mind, like, seriously, WHAT THE gently caress DO THEY EVEN DO THERE. They have 300 employees and they can't have a few dudes make what is essentially just a bunch of database entry types? Why do the people who unironically say "you don't understand game development" ask these questions? I understand game development just fine and what they are (not) doing is just mindblowing.

How can you develop the mining/cargo/whatever system without a good design document?
How can you have a good design document if your goals are ever-changing?
How can you not have ever-changing goals when the guy in charge is Chris Roberts?
How can you not have Chris Roberts without a never-ending one-upmanship war against all them evil publishers?

In short, it is the evil big publishers fault.

It's yet another day in the wasteland.

Ugh.

I was reading the FDev forums' SC thread and came across the latest shill's attempts at using refactoring as an excuse or explanation for something. Since I can't be arsed to register and post there just to get into a slapfight, can those of you who do please convey this bit of copypasta the next time it pops up:

quote:

You’re confusing “refactor” with “reprogram” or “redesign”. Refactoring means altering the structure — or hell, just the look — of the code without changing the functionality or behaviour. You do this for any number of reasons: you’ve been going so long that the code is an unmaintainable mess, so you refactor it to break it up in more logical chunks and add some goddamn comments this time(!); some dependent module has been fixed up so the abstractions aren’t so leaky any more or has been given more efficient calls, so you refactor you code as well to clean it up and make it more neat by calling those new interfaces instead; or you’ve discovered that a bunch of your modules really should be generalised as a shared common object so you refactor your code to implement a new general template design and to make it adhere to the conventional interfaces that come with that design.

You do not fix bugs with refactoring. Refactoring solves programmer problems, not problems on the programming level. It makes the code easier to work with, not bug-free. In fact, in a bit of a funny twist, if you remove bugs through your refactoring efforts, those efforts have fundamentally failed — the code no longer behaves the same so you haven’t refactored it properly. You’ve made a critical mistake somewhere that means your refactoring is unreliable and cannot be trusted. You may make the code more robust – refactoring it may make it harder to make erroneous calls or get lost in pointer hell – but that only affects future bugs that are avoided, and may make the bugs you’ve faithfully migrated from the old design to the new a lot easier to spot and stamp out. But that’s a completely separate step and has nothing to do with the refactoring itself — that’s just regular reprogramming. It’s a completely different level than refactoring.

Similarly, you do not fix design problems — module and object inheritance and interaction and all that noise — by refactoring. You fix design problems by… well… redesigning the hierarchy of those objects, most commonly to change the overarching logic of what bit code does what. This includes adding completely new functionality that isn’t or even can’t be covered by existing modules. The result of this redesign may indeed be a need to refactor some of the code to make old modules adhere to the new standards imposed by the redesign, but again, those are a two completely different levels.

You do not refactor assets. You redesign them or you simply optimise the ones you have to reduce pointless polygons and imbalanced densities in the texture mapping. At a stretch, some alterations in the asset pipeline — better metadata tagging and more logical storage structures — may obliquely count as some kind of “refactoring”; i.e. things that make the assets easier to find and work with.

So:
- Reprogram: alter the behaviour.
- Refactor: alter structure without changing the behaviour.
- Redesign: alter overarching logic.

Now, I will not blame you for confusing these terms. You’re just parrotting what Chris is saying (sometimes indirectly via Sandi, Ben and Lando). But that’s just it: you are confused because Chris has no idea what the term means. Neither do the other three. Chris hasn’t done any programming in two decades (and the others have no experience at all) and has never managed any kind of modern software development project. Whatever coding know-how he may have had at some point is now several generations out of date (and based on how his actual code worked back in the day, he was never exactly a top-tier programmer to begin with).

Instead, he just seems to parrot the term because it sounds like what kids these days call what he did back in his day, when in fact it means something radically different. The constant misuse of the term “refactor” is a huge red flag to anyone who has even the slightest shred of insight into software development — it just screams “incompetent boss spouting buzzwords he does not understand.” You see the same thing with all the other meaningless and pointless jargon he keeps inventing to make everything old new again. Like “physicalised EVA”, as if ragdolls and IK systems haven’t been around since the turn of the century. Or like “local physics grids”, as if different sectors with different physics weren’t a standard part in UnrealEngine 1. Or like any of the myriad of things that Chris tries to flaunt as innovative, when all they demonstrate is that he hasn’t kept up with the industry since he got thrown out of it (actually, in many cases, even before that). Again, it just screams of someone who hasn’t touched a computer game since the ‘90s.
