I have to shamefully admit I loved that book when I was a teenager. Not for the libertarian ideologies, I never even noticed them until I was much older. Just that it was a cool and edgy fantasy book, much more violent and dark than boring old Lord of the Rings. I think the best part is I was recommended to read it in high school by a friend who is also very left-wing and anti-libertarian. I guess teens are just bad at being critical, who knew?

I've been a huge reader all my life, but my best friend never had much use for books. However, he told me freshman year of high school that he loving loved the Sword of Truth, that he'd read all the books in middle school. I didn't think about because I knew nothing about them, but a decade later I bought the first one for the Kindle on a whim. I was expecting better-than-average genre fiction. When I called him to ask him what the gently caress, he was very chagrined. Apparently he had liked them originally because they had a message he had never heard before, and as an idiot middle-schooler that was edgy and interesting enough to make him completely dispense with critical thought. He had figured out how terrible they were shortly after our HS conversation, but never bothered to tell me because that's not really a natural or important conversation topic. He had no idea what libertarianism was when he read them in 7th grade, and the hormone surges from stabbings and hot chicks washed pretty much everything else away. Thank god, because I love the dude and would hate to drop him, because who the gently caress wants to be friends with an adult fan of the Sword of Truth.

It's just that, perhaps by an accident of history, the universe concept feels like exactly the kind of thing a Gamergater or one of those Return of Kings people would come up with.

Which, incidentally, I have blocked my entire Newsfeed using Facebook Purity (extension?). This was while being fully cooperative. It doesn't say anything about good guy or bad guy with a gun, it just says you're not allowed to be a black man with a gun.

The Black Panthers made it famous, but it still happens today. And unlike white rednecks walking into Chipotle with a Tapco-covered SKS to pose, they have a political purpose more realistic than "Scare pansy liberals by waving guns at them." White guys open carrying is usually an extended "I'm not touching you". Black guys doing it is "Stop loving killing us for no reason."

In the first book of the series the First Wizard gives the hero a lecture about how evil is a matter of perspective and that if you're not careful you can be as evil as those you fight. I always thought the series would have been interesting if at the end they looked back and realised they were villains they were just fighting men even eviler than they were. Sadly that is not what happens. All of the horrible things they do often for little to no reason is always treated as justified as the libertarian superman just fighting the good fight against communists.

That's on like page 3 of that let's read thread; it's what happens the first time they meet one of their universe's orcs (only it's that they're getting bit on the neck by flies but they can't move or swat them because then they'll be seen) So I guess what you're saying is that this happens a lot in that series, which I guess means Goodkind's way-too-specific fetish is about immobilization

And I even enjoyed Wheel of Time if it is a ton long winded with some books having nothing going on and the entire misogyny thing. After that I picked up The Malazan Book of the Fallen series for my next float and really enjoyed it. It had strong characters, great world building, and no weird fetish poo poo in it. It's easily my favorite of the 5+ book fantasy genre and has more to do with politics and war strategy than rape and torture. Well, except for the fallen god. But seriously, all that rape and torture poo poo, no wonder military poo poo people recommended it to me.
