I am in a pickle. For my Nexus 6p, I love running the phone with frequent updates from Google (until they randomly decide to stop doing it) but I want to know if there is a way to install an some applications as root, then remove the root while leaving the application behind still running as root. Mainly, the first thing will be an adblocker because Chrome is so abusable by millions of alerts and popups when I go to sites I normally visit that have never given me issues before. The reason I don't want to keep SuperSU or whatever just to prevent me from a fat finger giving some malware permission to just utterly gently caress up my poo poo.

Running an application as root is always going to require the mechanism for privilege escalation, which is to say, no, you cannot do what you want. You could use firefox and an adblocking addon instead, which doesn't require root. Your fear of accidentally giving away root permissions seems wildly unlikely unless you enjoy downloading and installing semi-random .apks, followed by not paying attention whatsoever.

If you were rooted you could set SuperSU to accept privilege escalation for AdAway then set it to auto-deny anything that asks with no prompt. No risk of fat-fingering a prompt that never shows.

1) Technically everyone's Gmail is part of the deep web. But sure, scare and shame tactics, rad as hell. (I don't actually care what you were trying to say, because I can only evaluate what you said based on what you said.) 2) Even sites like CNN serve up virus-laden ads these days. Tons of porn and warez there.

One alternative that I considered (before figuring out mobile Firefox could adblock) was setting up a VPN or proxy server at my house which would handle the blocking. That's accessible if you're even the least bit technical.

I need a phone recommendation for a ridiculous fringe-use scenario. I have a 4 year old that wants to be able to play Pokemon Go. I'm on TMobile, so my plan is to get him a phone without service, use my phone as a hotspot and let him play that way. The only things I want from this phone are: - as cheap as possible - has to run Marshmallow, because Doze was a gamechanger for battery life I have an old HTC One M7 that I dug out of a drawer, and I've been trying to get Cyanogenmod (which I think is only going to update it to Lollipop anyway) to run on it for several days, but I keep getting stuck in a reboot loop and I'm at the point where I'm tired of wasting time on it and I'm ready to just buy him something. I was thinking one of the last-gen Motorola's are probably the best bang for the buck, but figured you guys might know if there were any awesome deals on other phones. Refurbs are fine too.

While cheap phone recommendations are being mentioned: What's my best option in the $100-200 range for something cost-effective that should last for awhile. Mostly just looking for a decent camera, unlocked or t-mobile compatible, and can play something like Ingress or Go without the battery life instantly vanishing.

Well, $100-200 and "should last for a while" are sorta contradictory, but anything halfway decent is going to be at $200, no cheaper. The Asus ZenFone (2?) is apparently not bad, and it sounds like the new Moto G is an alright phone as well. Edit: Also you could wait 'til the new round of Nexus phones come out and see what the 5x drops to, it's I think $280 retail right now.

Through the rest of my time in school + relocating after. I'll take a look at the zenfone though. I also have prime so I can get the deals there for the Moto g, but wasn't sure if there were any better options than that.

I ended up placing an order just now for the BLU R1 HD that Amazon is running a deal on right now. It's probably not a great phone, but $50 is a reasonable price point for a phone I'm going to hand to a 4 year old.

I'm new to using Android, having recently acquired a Galaxy tablet. What do I need to know regarding security permissions when downloading apps? I've been checking the permission requirements each time I find an app that looks useful, and 90%+ of them require, among other suspicious things, "access to my SD card, with the ability to change/delete files". Why in the world would I want to allow a basic TV remote control app to have access to my SD card files? It doesn't seem to be a matter of simply needing to store the app's program files on the SD card, as several apps (including a notepad-like app that actually needs to store user-created data) don't have that requirement--or any special requirements at all. Many of the permission requirements seem unnecessary to me, with the SD card one being the most notable security risk. Why do so many simplistic apps need a whole list of special permissions, when it's obvious that they can get by with none? Am I being paranoid in avoiding these apps?

You're wise to avoid anything with permissions that don't match its function e.g. a torch app that wants your contacts and Internet access. Do bear in mind that some of the groups cover more than the name implies at first glance. Apps with settings will need read/write permission to make/use their config file.

People have freaked out on previous versions of Android because permissions like "access your contacts" were needed for things like showing who is calling when a phone call interrupts the app (or something like that). Worrying about SD card read/write privileges on any app is really unnecessary, though, as apps basically cannot be malicious to your SD card on modern Android (right?!).

After dropping my Nexus 5 onto some lovely soft concrete, the screen is finished. Bits of it have already started coming off so I'm really needing either a new phone or new screen. New screens run about £90, I could be getting a 5X for about £200 so I'm thinking it's probably worth just going for a wholly new phone. Of course then that started me off thinking about whether I really want a 5X basic phone that is probably going to be superseded by a new model in a few months. So I'm fishing for thoughts and opinions. I've been pretty happy with the 5, although even basic games like CoC get it pretty hot and I haven't been very impressed with battery life for any kind of non-phone usage. Phone gets used mostly for podcasts, sometimes Clash of Clanning or browsing forums so I don't feel like I need a bleeding edge model. More battery life would be really good. My only other thing is I've only ever had stock android on Nexus devices for phones, I'm not hard core against manufacturer specific models (and now that Google are compartmentalising things for faster OS updates it's even less of a concern) but feel like I need a reason to go for something outside that. Budget wise kind of flexible, UK based, won't go much over £400 (but would prefer the lower budget end).

I'm kind of in a bind. I need a good type c charger for my nexus 6p (mine broke) but I know that there have been issues with type-c cables not being standard. So thus far I have only trusted the chargers on the google store but I need a charger now, looking locally I seem to be unable to find any type c chargers at the moment. Does anyone know where I can pick up a type c charger for my nexus 6p at a brick and mortar?

The Nexus 5 and 5X are pretty easy to disassemble, especially since there isn't much adhesive to deal with. I'd probably go that route since the dropped phone probably acquired some scuffs when dropped.
