Ah, I didn't realize they were radar facilities. Congrats!

Also; I didn't get my voting login, or our representative ballots, because the union managed to not bother to record my address.

Today I was able to convince ZME that I'd shut them off regarding Midway landers by telling them to put them on their normal route instead of the playbook routes they were on since the weather moved out and the sector they were going into was getting worked. OM's got involved :wtc:

Thank you to whoever the Supervisor was on KZWY about 5 hrs ago, who when we lost Santa Maria and the only frequency we could find that worked was for NY gave us some actual working frequencies albeit for Shanwick when nothing at all was working.

Also, apologies from the Kestrel who was blocking NY when only 300 miles from Spain.

Happens drat near every day, especially with solar activity. They have a list of all the frequencies Gander/Shanwick/Santa Maria have access to and what they're currently using, and the ability to find out what frequency just about any facility across the globe is using. I'd had flights call us that should have been talking to Brisbane radio or Niamey!

Pretty rough right now but it looks like things should be getting better soon!

Anybody hear about the New York TRACON training MOU? They're getting 25% to train and every time they certify someone, every CPC in the area gets a $3000 cash award. It just came out last week and everyone involved is trying to keep it quiet.

Yeah I heard about that. I hear so many other rumors about NY that I don't even care anymore.

The sentiment here in Texas is that the NY controllers are addicted to their overtime pay and don't want anyone certified because they don't want to be adequately staffed. That would cut into their OT.

Quick clairfication. AIM 5-1-4 f. reads: "On pilot’s request, at a location having an active tower, the aircraft identification will be forwarded by the tower to the FSS for reporting the actual departure time. This procedure should be avoided at busy airports."

If you have a VFR flight plan on file, and tower is able to accommodate this request, would this automatically trigger the opening of said VFR flight plan thus negating a call to FSS? Also, it does not explicitly mention it that I know of (it's been a while since I've flown on a flight plan) but can a tower CLOSE a VFR flight plan as well; on request?

Yes and yes.

We call FSS on the phone and ask them to do it for you, basically.

FAA Press Release

quote:

In preparation for the future workforce, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced today that it will be accepting applications from entry-level candidates for air traffic controller positions from August 8-15, 2016.

“We provide the safest, most efficient airspace system in the world and we need exceptional people to support our mission,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

The FAA regulates the aviation industry to ensure that every person who travels through America’s skies arrives safely at their destination. The FAA employs more than 14,000 air traffic controllers who are largely responsible for carrying out this mission.

The job vacancy announcement for the position of Air Traffic Control Specialist-Trainee will be available on USAJobs.gov, the federal government's official job site. If you’re interested in applying, you can establish an online account today. This is a highly competitive position. The agency expects more than 25,000 applications for approximately 1,400 positions during the seven-day job opening. All applicants will need to meet basic qualifications and answer specific questions for this position once the job is announced.
Air Traffic Control Specialists (ATCS) are responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious movement of air traffic through the nation's airspace.

Developmental controllers receive a wide range of training in controlling and separating live air traffic within designated airspace at and around an air traffic control tower or radar approach control facility, or air route traffic control center. As a new ATCS, you will spend your first several months of employment in an intensive training program at the FAA Academy located in Oklahoma City, OK.

The FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016 affected the ATCS hiring process. As a result of this legislation, candidates who graduated from a Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI) program are required to submit proof of graduation and an appropriate recommendation from the CTI institution. Eligible veteran candidates are required to provide a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active duty within 120 days of the announcement closing. The FAA strongly encourages potential applicants to take the necessary measures to obtain this information as soon as possible to receive consideration for ATCS positons.

To learn more about the air traffic controller profession as well as an overview of the day-to-day work please view this link:

E: Only 1,400 openings though? I thought the hiring "crisis" had them needing more than that, or can they only accept so many at a time?

They say they can only accept so many at a time.

There definitely is a limit to how many academy classes can run simultaneously, but I don't see why they can't keep hiring until the job is done. That's been the FAA for the last 15 years though. Too little, too late.

Why does everything STILL smell like pussy?

I have an email address that people occasionally use in online forms that require a real email address to complete, because it starts with "not applicable" (more or less). This means I sometimes receive automated replies acknowledging receipt of a form I didn't fill out myself. Yesterday, I got this:

quote:

Dear John Doe,

Thank you for filing your aircraft noise complaint with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.

Along with the following information, your submitted details have been received and will be logged, analyzed, mapped and reported to Port Authority officials and shared with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Your Complaint Details

PANYNJ Complaint #: 162359
Airport: Don't Know/Not Sure

Noise Event: Aug 02 2016 10:40
Primary Concern: Too Frequent

Airplanes may be from Hackettstown Airport not sure.

*Please advise aircraft tends to fly low loud hovers and circles around Netcong Heights complex frequently and daily. Thank you for your time, hope the noise of aircraft gets resolved quickly.

I googled and checked out the nearby airports on FlightAware, and it appears he's under one of the main approach vectors for Newark Liberty (EWR). Sorry about your sleep, bro.

I recently found out that noise-sensitive airports have sensors that trigger if an aircraft goes through the area while being too noisy. Pilots get warned and then barred from accessing that airport if they violate the noise abatement rules too often.

I can't imagine being that up in arms about planes. I love hearing them fly over. I live right by the 18R final to DFW.

Lots of people are whiny, delicate little snowflakes that believe their every wish must be catered to at all times, and that any unwelcome intrusion into their lives must be eliminated. I think it comes from a failure to develop from a child into an adult in a normal fashion -- there should be a stage in your adolescence at which you realize you aren't the centre of the universe, and it's clearly a stage that many of these people missed.
