Pittsburgh takes Matt Murray because he's a good young goalie who has won a cup already and has a strong AHL pedigree and so I'm pretty sure he's going to be at worst a solid starting goalie and he has the potential to be an elite one.

Don't see a problem with Murray there. His track record is incredible. People predicting his regression aren't predicating it on any kind of evidence, but just some kind of vague hope/feeling, eg Gaudreau is too small/slow.

There's other comparable ones but Murray has a Cup which doesn't really mean anything but I could have flipped a coin between him and the other two young goalies I'm thinking of so I might as well take the one I like and know

Murray is gonna be a very good goalie but I wouldn't pick him over someone else. And young goalies this early seems weird to me.

No, I am saying that I think it's wise to use the first few picks you have on developing a core of the best possible players. Saving money on Dumba instead of choosing several other D who are young and a lot better is a worse strategy than drafting a better D now for more money and going cheap on your role players because those skills are more abundant.

I hear you, but I think a better defenseman will only be incrementally beneficial, and cost 4-5 million more.

With the 101st pick the Chicago Blackhawks select Brandon Saad.

I need goal scoring and Saad was 12th in G/60 last year, on the Blue Jackets, with an only slightly-inflated shooting percentage. He's 23 and his contract covers most of his productive years. I know it broke his little heart going to Columbus last year so now that he's a Blackhawk again he'll be happy. Happy players keep their track suits dry.

Dumba isn't under contract though, so I'm confused. He's an RFA right now, his contract was up this season.

He's almost certainly going to cost substantially more than 850k.

All the truly elite goalies are gone except for one and Murray is likely to be comparable to the other older ones left.

Anyways Saad. Good pick that.
