Is Descent worth it for the solo camping with the App? I liked what I saw of the system with the Vassal module, but it was too clunky to keep playing that way.

Also, after two years of buying the game, I'm finally playing Twilight Struggle regularly... on iPad :(

Leigh and Quinns did an article dissecting the idea of gamifying sex. They conclude you likely end up with a boring game or with boring sex.

Not quite what you're asking about but related, Naomi Watts of DeadPixel.co designed an art game about negotiating sexual consent with an alien who doesn't speak earth-languages. I can see it having a parallel purpose to video games like Radiator 2 or Consensual Torture Simulator, in that it explores ideas of consent, care, patience, and nonverbal communication. Which are all very important to a healthy bedroom (or gently caress-dungeon, whatever works for you).

James Wallis did a great talk on the history of sex board games that's super well-researched and well fun.

All this talk about Scythe is making my purchase hand tremble. I think I will hold off until a meetup and hope someone already took the plunge.

I got to try Arkham Horror this weekend and I didn't mind it. It went by quickly and even though we hosed up a few of the rules it wasn't as terrible as I was expecting it to be. I think my main problem with it wasn't necessarily the dice chucking but more the swingyness between the monsters that showed up and the lack of gradual amp up. It felt like poo poo just gets out of hand instantly and unless you know what you're doing or get very lucky with the Other World event cards it could be super frustrating. I was thinking that maybe a better way for monsters to arrive is to have them in stacks of various difficulties and that as more and more gates open or horror climbs that the difficulty of the monster increases, as opposed to getting butt-hosed right away by something insane. But anyway, it wasn't bad and the guy who owned it got it and the expansion for :10bux: so... not bad?

On the plus side I get to try Omega Centauri this week. Sinewave, any advice on the first play through?

I wonder if there's a good way to homerule this, as I've felt the same way about the monster in Eldritch Horror. One moment you're fighting cultists, the next you're fighting Starspawn, the next you're fighting a simple vampire.

Free to roam the heavens in man's noble quest to investigate the weirdness of the universe!

It's less of a concern in Eldritch, since most of the monsters don't do anything to the game state besides guarding a gate. And there's always Tokyo encounters to get rid of/do damage to monsters.

If you get a chance, try it with the most recent expansion. Something something blood (I honestly can't remember).

I liked the game at first but soured on it quickly once it became clear that the arena combat has a lot of fiddly mechanics and really unthematic strategies. The first expansion introduced a 2v2 primus that was fun but basically never triggered. The newest expansion kept the primus but added festival intrigue cards that force the 2v2 with special rules such as 'only slaves', '2vs1', 'slave and gladiator' etc.

The variance due to festivals means that a lot of the old standby bullshit doesn't work as well, and combat stops being the worst part of the game.

Yeah, I have the festivals expansion (and the promo gladiators), I just need the actual expansion that has the Primus, which I'll probably pick up this week. We're enjoying the game, but yeah, I can see doing "2v2" working a lot better, especially when one person has a great gladiator and everyone else is still working with their starting guys.

My girlfriend and I are looking for good co-op games that can be played with just two people. Something fairly challenging and with some longevity but not too tedious to set up. So far we think Dead Men Tell No Tales and Ghost Stories look promising. Would these be good choices, or are there others that might be better? Neither of us have that much exposure to board games.

...and then, we held hands. is a great choice. 2 players only, co-op, and is actually about relationships.

Pandemic is pretty good on its own, and the expansions throw in a bit of variety when you start to get bored of the base game.

Alternatively you could get pandemic legacy and have the most fun losing over 12-24 games.

If you can, I suggest playing the "short" game first which has simplified rules & still highlights many of the facets of the game while still being thinky. Depending on players and experience you can probably just play the short game once then play advanced thereafter.

You can dive straight into advanced but I think the short game was great for learning while still being a legit Gane game experience. (loving phone for some ungodly reason insists on capital-G "Gane" instead of "game" whenever I type )

Besides that: your reserves are your "fleet tokens bank". Destroyed fleets go back to your reserve, built fleets come from the reserve. The ONLY way more tokens enter the reserve is via Mobilize. So keep the extra fleet tokens separate. Accidentally taking fleets from the stock (ie the spare not in play tokens) when building, or discarding to the stock when destroyed is a big no no.

Rutibex, ignoring the points that people make and trying to bring forward the same arguments over and over again is not going to work.

Let me give you an example: I'm a big fan of Oglaf, the webcomic series. It's not perfect but it is a funny webcomic that features a lot of nudity, but is fairly egalitarian in terms of that nudity. I don't have an issue with the nudity present within Oglaf. Is nudity appropriate within Oglaf? Yes, because I specifically go to that website to see those comics. Is nudity appropriate to the statue you posted? Yes, because the art is the totality of it, and there is nothing else apart from that, and it would be diminished if it was different. The reason why in EXCEED the art is inappropriate is because I didn't buy EXCEED to titillate me: I bought it because I loved the rules and mechanisms of the game. The game would be in no way diminished if you removed the objectionable art: it would remain fundamentally the same game.

It's the same reason why I don't have issues with Tanto Cuore (I do have issues with Barbarossa because sexualising WWII is loving gross). I wouldn't buy Tanto Cuore myself, but if you bought in the game it's pretty clear why you would buy into it.

We can keep slamming against this wall but until you understand that context is important, there's nothing else that can be done. At which point we dip into Poe's Law so many times that the entire conversation is essentially pointless.

I don't agree with Rutibex's points, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong about sexualization in media. In my opinion, porn existing in whatever form is not definitively immoral. My issue with this kind of artwork is how pervasive it is throughout the medium and, as in cases like this, where it seems so out of place.

I think Taunto Core or whatever isn't as bad because it's up front about it. It doesn't hide from what it is. Having the rest of the game "normal" and then the females inexplicably dressed like extras in Dominion Does Dallas will obviously upset people and the publisher deserves poo poo for it.

edit: tekopo basically just said the same thing but better. Also Oglaf is great.
