For anyone who wants to send Kevin Frank a nice note, try here.

I'm going to miss HLTS a lot, especially as someone who grew up around Christians who weren't nearly as nice. Reminds me that there's good still left there.

I did send him a note, and he responded almost immediately. He seemed honestly touched that I contacted him to tell him I liked his work.

Writing a message to Kev myself. It was a good comic, and even though I'm not a Christian, it promoted a good, honest message.

Aren't they playing a high school dance? How many t-shirts and CDs can they expect to sell? When did they record CDs and design t-shirts anyways?

Also I'm pretty bummed about HLTS like everyone else.
I always like that Monty lives on Richardweed Ln. I used to think it was a slam on Chickweed lane but it's probably not. It's most likely just a way for the writer to pseudo-sneak "Dickweed" into the newspaper comics section here and there.

Welp. It looks like HLTS will be leaving Comics Kingdom soon.

I emailed Kevin Frank at kevin@kevinfrank.net to let him know how I would miss the strip and he replied.

Kevin Frank posted:

Your message was so kind, thank you very much for writing. My goal was indeed to be some kind of light in a sea of toxic Christianity, and of course I fell short all too often, but it's encouraging to know that a few people did appreciate it over the years. I've heard from nine or ten today --unprecedented for me--so I am feeling the love.

I've had great fun making this thing over the past decade and wish it had sold enough for the syndicate to renew my contract, but I still count myself lucky to have had the years I did.
Thanks for your note and for helping me celebrate the run I had with HLTS.

Yours,
Kevin

Not sure whether that's Lu Ann, but that looks like one of the special military air mail stationeries - there was a time when you would write the message on one side, and then fold it and address the other side. The paper was really, really thin and lightweight. Soldiers serving in combat zones could send mail home for free. (They would just write "free" in WWII, but I thought that by this time you had to have some sort of indicia to do it. I could be wrong. I have a couple of family letters that were written on that stationery, though, so it looks familiar.)

Maybe this is supposed to be a letter from Lu Ann's husband, and this takes place before he was killed in Vietnam.

That was very eloquent! And exactly articulates what irritates me about a lot of modern comic strips-- they don't necessarily have to be funny, per se, but they do have to address their topics with tact. MdJ fails at this consistently

He's definitely aware of it, since he put a reference into one of his strips. It was about how people in this thread posted nice things about the comic as contrasted with self-identified Christians who sent him hate mail.
