Well, poo poo, I have no idea what's causing my game to freeze on opening the soldier editor. But it freezes my game on any changes I make to any soldier in the soldier editor.

Longer Name has already been disabled, and I'm already dreading having to toggle every option off and on again one bit at a time to see what the culprit is.

Mind, this is after a fresh reinstall since I had some missing *.dll issues.

So how does Frostbite work on the serpent suit? Is it guaranteed freeze, then a percent chance to pull the target out of cover if humanoid? What's the percentage for?

My Spark has punch, bombard, and is going to get sacrifice, I think if I use them again I'm taking the heavy cover one, rainmaker, nova, and repair, just have it run around blowing things up all day. Overdrive to shoot multiple times is kind of lovely either way, but using it for a shot then anything else works out fine.

It's poo poo.

It takes a (admittedly free) shot on the enemy, and if that shot hits it does the freeze. I find the shot to be inaccurate, and the enemy benefits from cover when you're taking it as well. I've never seen a situation where the freeze has helped any more than a bullet, and if it wasn't a free action it would be the worst ability in the game. As it is, it's a slightly better spider suit.

Oh I've just been getting lucky? Well that sucks. I froze the archon king to get one last hit in.

Thinking about them more I think the Spark's actual role is a combo MEC-SHIV; either a backup unit if you need it when someone important's out, a scout at best, but not a leading role on its own. You only need one or two max (honestly I think two at once is pushing it for the price), they're too fragile to actually tank (more so than the MECS even, who went down fast if you weren't careful), and too inaccurate to rely on its gun. Instead it either scouts then falls back, explodes and repairs itself, or is slotted in for when the grenadiers are out or the specialist is down for the count.

I'm exaggerating a little bit - since it's a free action it doesn't actually hurt you. It has 1 more health than a skeleton suit, and all other benefits too. Thing is, since it's a regular AIM roll you might as well just kill the enemy. Hell, with defense taken into account you might not even be able to tag an exposed one. The "pulls humanoids out of cover" aspect is not a huge boon because you have to actually hit them when they're in cover. There are much better ways to negate cover than this one.

I'm mad because it's failed every time I tried to use it. But not too mad because, again, it's a freebie.

The freeze can be useful if you have two guys left and you can only kill one. Freeze (hopefully) one of them and kill the other. Denying the enemy unit's turns is a fine consolation prize if you can't kill them outright.

The most useless Alien Hunters suit power is the one that makes Mutons panic when they see you because without fail every single time I have equipped that suit, the first Muton I saw decided to panic and shoot a pod I hadn't engaged yet, which has invariably resulted in things like a codex cloning into my line of sight and engaging an extra pod or two.

It didn't really occur to me until now but the ruler armors are just a spider suit, warden armor, and war suit with a free perk on them huh? So I built waaay too much stuff in the proving grounds. :haw:

Not so much the icarus armor, which comes with what is basically a teleport, and rocket legs aka springy legs.

The other two though, yeah.

They get two free perks each (snake gets evasiveness and ice grapple, muton gets muton panic and melee attack), but yeah pretty much.

Snake gets snake panic too. Which worked great for me once, but I haven't seen snakes on any missions since.

Spider gets dodge too, right? Snake is just Spider with +1 health, snake panic (useless), and an inaccurate freeze whip.
Rage is EXO (or WAR) suit with +1 health, +1 mobility, muton panic and a melee.
Icarus is the one that actually seems good. It's got the extra health and mobility over warden, gets to actually keep both its item slots, gets springy legs and teleport. And the archon panic I suppose.

deep dish peat moss

Spider/Wraith Suit gives a +20/+25 dodge bonus, the snake suit gives +35/+40 dodge - I was confused because my soldier got the Long War Evasiveness perk at the same time he equipped the suit, which is a dodge bonus that persists until the first time you get hit. I thought it came from the suit.

e: for what it's worth I think the +15 dodge makes the snake suit worth using, the muton suit is basically just "do you want to get a melee attack but also maybe have muton panics set off extra pods?"

On the other hand it's really loving annoying that Icarus armor doesn't have a grappling hook. Yes, it's got the jet boots, but you can only use those twice a mission, and you can't use them to position your sniper during Concealment because apparently they're really loving loud and will pop Concealment.

Isn't the 2 per mission the big jump that basically teleports you anywhere? You should be able to just jump up to the top passively like a Spark can. Unless I'm remembering wrong.

Is the muton melee a free action? I like giving my ranger a war suit, so that'd be perfect. Throw an axe, throw a punch, shoot a shredstorm. :getin:

I actually use it on my heavies ... and I give my ranger the snakesuit, with the extra armour utility items.

The reason I give the berzerk suit to a grenadier is that the heavy weapon slot makes sense, considering they have so few uses for their existing projectiles. And the melee attack is that one extra bit of flexibility. Rangers already have a (powerful!) melee attack.

Well, my first run in with it I had to restart because half my team got frozen in its first move and then it choked a survivor. But then on the reload I was a little more careful triggering his appearance and took out two of his life bars in one go without losing anyone.

I finally got around to buying XCOM 2 because hey, $30, can't pass that up.

Is the DLC good/recommended? Any mods I should be looking at, or best to play it fresh? Are there any clueless newbie pitfalls I should avoid, or things I should be particularly going out of my way to do?

teethgrinder

I don't see why not starting with playing the DLC really ... you can ignore the missions for a while until they're easier (sorry I don't remember the exact trigger names).

For mods, I feel you can just start playing, and if something about the game rubs you the wrong way, you can then find and add a mod to fix it. The base game is FINE, but there's some interface stuff you might wish to improve.

Preemptively get Evac All, Stop Wasting My Time, and Overwatch Others / All. Those are the core three gameplay improvements without being gameplay changes, imo.

(Though be careful when evaccing VIPs. Have them / the soldier carrying them go individually, first. There's been a bad bug where the VIP randomly dies that seems to come up with Evac All.

While I'm here I also want to recommend Recovery Turn System to anyone who's played through the game a few times and wants a different experience. It vastly changes the way battles play out, instead of you and the aliens taking turns moving all of your units, each unit has a specific turn order and it's possible that their stun lancer might move after your assault, but before your sniper. You can't switch units anymore, so there's no more using a unit as a backup plan in case another soldier misses their shot. It adds a ton of depth to your battlefield decision making.

If you're using it make sure you download some kind of mod to adjust turn-based timers because it does weird things with them, also be prepared to lose soldiers to bullshit you probably didn't see coming because you're not used to the limitations the mod forces upon you.

Fair enough ... and I came to Evac All immediately when I first started. For what it's worth, it's never bugged out on me, but most of the time I get the VIP to the site and evac them separately anyway.

I was considering how XCOM would play with something like this! I'll have to do a run with it later.

Yeah, I still wouldn't recommend actually enabling ironman because of bugs, but if you're holding yourself to it, evac the vip first, THEN evac all.

Me llamo Sarah Brandolino, the eighth Castilian of this magnificent marriage.
I have to ask: is there a mod that prevents armor from being randomized every time something new is equipped? It eventually made me just uninstall all the armor mods save for a few I really liked because when I upgraded suddenly everyone looks dumb or are missing limbs. The sliders in the game options are all set at 0 and don't change anything, still have people popping up with mish mash. I also tried at some point using uniform manager but that was ultra tedious.

I really want to like this mod, but stunlancers break the hell out of it. Hope you like being stunned the entire missioN!

Meanwhile :negative: xcom2 is always crashing at the end of the mission. Could be trying to evac an X4 facility, could be shooting the last guy on an evac, but it very often gives me a 'GIrunning' virtual error. My work around has been redoing the mission while invincible, but its tedious as gently caress. Any known fixes?
