The more I read on the quest system the more anxious I get

I like my RPG content to be akin to a checklist. A system in which I am just continuously locked out of content as I spend time elsewhere is going to make it way more stressful than it should be. How can you enjoy a quest if you know that others are being automatically failed as a punishment?

e: on second thought, a system that essentially punishes people for playing the game is a very poetic and relevant to Barkley 2's overall goal of punishing people who want to enjoy it
I was about to write up a more detailed explanation, but it's better if you all experience the game by playing it. But in summary, it's literally impossible to experience the entire game in one playthrough, and that's kind of the point. Everyone who plays the game will have a unique experience. If you really want to experience the entire game (as in all quests), or to find better/different outcomes for quests you weren't satisfied with, you'll need to play through the game several times. Some might call this 'replay value', but personally I call it 'just a depressingly bad game'.

yes, in fact the recommended way to play is to bury it miles away from your house and encourage someone else to dig it up

It made me a little sad to find out that most people didn't bother to play through all the starting options on Dragon Age: Origins and the most popular choice was human noble.

that one was advertised as being "like game of thrones" so of course it'd be more popular

I can only hope Barkley 2 handles romance with the same grace as game of thrones and dragon age did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNRaTejGNps

Looking at it now, it really is disgusting. The flesh is transparent. From the start, I had no idea if it would even make a clapping sound. So I diligently reproduced everything about human hands, the bones, joints, and muscles, and then made them slap each other pretty hard.
I still can't believe they promised more regular updates with a regular schedule and then immediately stopped after two.

This pretty much sums up the game's development, tbh

Every time i see an update for this game it sounds like when Tom Arnold kept saying True Lies 2 was in production and it was gonna be some crazy poo poo. Now Arnold is old and James Cameron is making 4 sequels to his lovely 3D blue cat movie and also 9/11 happened.

Basically this game is gonna be cool as poo poo and also kickstart Tom Arnolds career

I know it's been like a year since CBoyardee posted in this thread, but I was wondering about this game 'The Screamer', a Japanese Dungeon crawler for the PC-88. There's some text in there that caught my eye:

Also, what elements of this cyberpunk adventure will be incorporated into Barkley 2?

At some point they decided to just keep working on the game until they couldn't work on it anymore.

That and they have no actual release schedule or publisher pressure so they're just working on stuff instead of cutting features and content to make a deadline.

Here's an update.

bballbisse posted:

So there’s a memory leak with enemies at the moment which causes the game to crash after playing it for around an hour depending on how much combat you encounter and how much RAM your computer has.
Memory leaks are normal and tracking them down is standard dev work. With Game Maker though, finding these memory leaks is a nightmare.
Finding leaks in any language is tough, but what makes it harder with GM is that there is no tooling whatsoever to help. There are no tools to show what is allocating your memory, or metrics on allocation/deallocation, etc. The only number you have is current memory usage in MB.
So tracking down memory leaks is very much manual work, moreso than usual. Turn on the game, enter/exit a room, watch memory go up and down. Track the difference and see how much you’re leaking. Inspect every part of your code and look for obvious issues. After that, turn on/off features you think are leaking, and check the difference in leaked MB’s. Repeat until it’s down to zero.
Not glamourous work, but finding and plugging a leak after a long time is pretty satisfying, and you learn a lot in the process.

I think there are a bunch of people who can create trailing images. I know some who could do this as if they were just going out for a stroll.
So wait, GameMaker makes you do your own memory management, but has no debugging tools for when you inevitably make a mistake somewhere? Geez, that sounds awful.
