Version 11 of Android's default messaging app adds the ability to send video messages, but it removes the ability to display SMS and IM messages in a single conversation.

that's to prep users for removing SMS from it entirely.

We announced a new video messaging app at i/o an entire month ago, so we're about due for another completely different and mutually incompatible one. It only makes sense we'd add a video messaging feature to an existing sms app (of course while removing part of the sms functionality at the same time).

i don't get googs messaging poo poo. gchat circa 2k6 was needs-suiting. it was nice at the time because I think you could use aim with it, which meant everyone could finally uninstall aim or trillian or whatever. the names keep getting dumber and dumber too.

to be clear, if my current hangouts install still combines hangouts+sms, I should never upgrade it? e: i use google voice all the time so i'm avoiding leaving hangouts until another app integrates all three

I was trying to list all of them earlier and I learned about some new ones that I had only vaguely heard of. We got: Allo for text messaging over data Duo for 1:1 video calls Hangouts for text messages over data that don't work very well, many:many video calls that are really good, also sms but only in some versions, phone calls (but only from the web, right?), some other stuff Hangouts Dialer which does phone calls from Android Google voice which does phone calls from Android, and also sms but only in some versions Project Fi for phone calls and phone service and whatnot. Messenger for sms Spaces for... Link sharing? I'm actually not sure what spaces is for YouTube Messenger for text messaging but only about YouTube videos Did I miss any? I guess there's also like a million ways you can use Google apps to send text messages: direct messages in google+, comments in sheets, docs and slides, and so on, but then you're getting pretty far afield from "messaging apps".

Now that I think about it I guess I kind of get it: Hangouts is getting kind of old and the brand doesn't really work for young people, so you invent some new brands for the new shiny functionality. But you can't kill the old brands, because if you kill the old brands people get mad (aren't people still mad about GTalk, the last time google did this?). I guess you could choose to not do anything, just leave Hangouts like it is, but the features in Allo are actually genuinely pretty cool and it would suck not to have people use them. So you end up choosing the lesser of two evils: a pile of apps that have overlapping functionality. So I guess probably nobody's dumb or evil or self-aggrandizing, they just make the best of a situation that they found themselves in. Like Allo is Hangouts for non-corporate / young people with shiny new features Duo is Hangouts video calling for non-corporate / young people Hangouts Dialer is that way because of the Intents system on Android Fi is something completely different and needed its own app for customer service anyway Messenger... no idea. It's probably important to have an app that doesn't depend on google play services so people can reliably use AOSP??? I'm not sure. Hell even Spaces is probably for some obtuse corporate use cases that don't come up in the general public; maybe in a year it'll have only a few users but they'll all be really rabid. YouTube Messenger is kind of hard to defend but I dunno, I assume someone did market research and decided it was a good idea. I guess that's probably a bad post for the Google Thread but I dunno, maybe it all kind of makes sense if you squint.
