Anyone got ideas about what might be the minimum GPU that might be able to run a Rift, not to play games but just for movies/virtual desktop? I kind of hoped the Ion netbook I have would do fine, but even once I'd got past the (currently arbitrary) SSE 2.4 CPU check, I can't proceed through the full setup because it needs a more recent NVidia gpu driver. Although I haven't tried it with SteamVR - I take it that doesn't work without all the Oculus stuff installed?
I'm not sure what's the earliest driver version they'll support or what's the oldest GPU (or cheapest laptop with a GPU) that would at least allow installation. Probably wouldn't be enough to play movies in BigScreen or VD anyway right?

The only reviews they have are written. The rest of their video content is not review based. They are just trying stuff out like everyone else. Usually it's their first or second time touching the game, especially with VR.

I've definitely noticed some slowdown in terms of actual game framerate with my 1070 but the "look" framerate has been silky smooth, which I guess is what keeps me from feeling nauseated. ATW is cool. I wish American Truck Sim ran better - unstable framerate on High but the resolution general crispness looks too bad with anything lower.

Since a 1070 is ~= to a 980Ti currently (until the VR specific special abilities get implemented in VR games) that means your about the same as me and Euro/American Truck Sim has an issue they have still yet to fix in their engine. You sit in a town, and the framerate/cpu/gpu usage goes to crap (FPS drops, CPU and GPU usage are nowwhere near max) but the minute you drive outside of town, usage climbs as does FPS and whatnot.

No idea what it is and have yet to see anything from the devs about it being looked into/fixed and its annoying because some bottleneck is leaving performance on the table as it holds up everything else in the process line in town, which isn't really that big of a town in the first place.

Similar bottleneck feel as running the Rift through SteamVR for games like Elite and such too.

Dirt Rally is super great if you're into racing games. If you think you'd like to play a rally game, pick it up. It's the only modern VR rally game at the moment and it's super good. If you end up not liking it, steam has refunds.

Edit: If you play dirt rally in VR and don't like the lock to horizon, go to Documents/My Games/Dirt Rally/hardwaresettings and open the config xml in notepad, find "orientationlock" and set that to true. False locks to horizon, true locks to car.

Yeah that sounds about right. Hope they optimize it eventually, I just wanna drive my big truck the speed limit down the desert highway :(

I tried the Vector game, pretty cool but also have framerate issues. I know it's Early Access but obviously for VR that's a tough obstacle. I was wondering if that was more my CPU though since it's so physics based - I have an i7 3770 3.4 GHz.

Also, Oculus is kidding themselves if they think I'm going to buy an early VR game on Home instead of the place I can get a refund.

If a game uses Unity's built in renderer it would be a moderate amount of work. If it uses a custom renderer it would be a large amount of work.

Note that Valve's dynamic scaling technique, while effective, can significantly reduce picture quality. Instanced stereo and fixed foveated rendering are mostly lossless, and they're the things people usually talk about as the new Nvidia tech (even though you can do them almost as well on other hardware). There are no current Unity or Unreal renderers that do these, so it would be a large amount of work for any game.

The ideal would be for games to use all three techniques, since they're all compatible with each other and they're all possible on any hardware.

SPACE HOMOS
Jan 12, 2005

My coworker is letting me borrow his DK2, so last night I tried out a Dirt Rally, iRacing, Assetto Corsa, Elite: Dangerous, and House of the Dying Sun. Are there any demos that are interesting? Since I don't own the rift I don't really want to buy a bunch of VR games.

So far I am pretty imrpessed with the rift. I didn't realize how well it worked and it does really confuse your brain. I get a little motion sickness, not stomach churning but just feeling hot. Taking jumps or having the car go backwards in Dirt Rally really tricks my brain. Out of the racing sims I own, I think iRacing looks the clearest without having to mess with pixel density. Assetto Corsa does a great job of car interiors but things don't look as defined in the distance. I tired raising it to 1.5 density which is fine for hotlapping but as soon as other cars are loaded it drops to 60 fps. I know ACs rift support is experimental, so I hope they make some improvements. Without the post processing all the colors look blown out - but with it on its blurrier than normal.

E:D has a cool cockpit that you want to look at, but I get bored of being a space trucker real fast. House of the Dying Sun throws you right into the action so I enjoyed it in VR a lot. While its vehicles are not as detailed as E:D, once you stop looking for flaws and play its pretty cool.

My biggest complaint is not a flaw of the rift, but I have to wear my glasses and the rift feels like its going to mess up my frames which are not huge or wide. Every time I pull off the rift it pulls off my glasses. I adjusted the straps as they recommended on Ocullus' FAQ. I am nearsighted so I thought I would be fine without them but Its just out of focus without glasses.

The rift focuses to infinity so the screen looks like it is far away. It shouldn't scratch your glasses or anything like that but your glasses might scratch the dk2. The lenses are made of plastic.

Insomniac states a November release date for The Unspoken (that wizard fight club thing). So presumably, no later than that. Based off of that, I'd guess that Touch preorders go live not long after OC3 (which runs October 5-7). I kind of hope they try to get a head start on shipping orders ahead of the actual software launch given the debacle that was the CV1 launch, but I'm not gonna hold my breath on that. Hopefully they'll also announce the price ahead of orders going live this time, too.

Find a used G25/27 that fully works and go nuts. The G29/920 have the stupid shifter bought separate and are still essentially identical to the G27 outside of console specific buttons and its stupid.

Also If you don't have a way to mount the wheel nicely to your desk (or just don't want to mess with mounting/unmounting it each time you want to race, I can recommend this neat deal.

It is simple but works well once you get the cables all organized well. Makes it easy to move around as a set and you can lower it down to store if need be.

As far as I'm aware, the 5000 developer touch units are probably already out and being shipped en masse.

One of the indie game developers I follow (Glass Bottom Games - Hot Tin Roof people) got 3! boxes of Touch controllers before their HMDs shipped.

Also all of the people who are already doing experiments and filming youtube videos using the touch controllers.
Don't we even have a goon or two in this thread that also have the touch controller dev kits?

One can extrapolate that the production timeline is basically ironed out and that they can move these more quickly than they could HMDs as they aren't dependent on any fancy manufacturing processes or external providers like screens/lenses/sound drivers

I suspect the vaugeness on the launch window is more to give their contracted developers more time to finalize their games and build up stock rather than some unexpected delay.
We all know how things went when they did a soft launch of the Rift (announce, take preorders, set a date) and then miss that date.
A hard launch where they announce and start shipping same day would be crazy... but it depends on whether or not they'd have enough stock on hand to actually do a hard launch.

Looks like Out of Ammo are botching their release cycle. They pushed multiplayer without fixing bugs, and introduced more bugs in the process. When they were working on the MP update, they claimed they couldn't fix bugs at the same time, like they aren't branching at all. They put out 2 new feature releases without addressing some pretty annoying bugs with the core gameplay.

They added a survival mission, and it's awful. You're supposed to survive in a valley amidst wreckage, but it's a mess. You can't carry any magazines around, so you have to move over to a full one (scattered around) to pick it up when you need to reload. Also they implemented teleporting but really didn't think it through. There's no parabolic targeting, and it doesn't really work well with the rest of the game. It's out of place.

Incredibly, they failed to add a game menu to the new modes (including overwatch) so all you can do is finish or quit the game. How did that pass testing?

They're being pretty slapdash with the release process so I'm going to change my opinion of Out of Ammo from buy to wait.

Turns out VR cover are going to make a thinner facplate/padding for the oculus which should reduce the godray issue and increase the fov, similar to how it reduces blur on the vive. Also there'll be one to make glasses easier to wear with the headset. It's insane that nobody thought to include different faceplates and padding with the headsets in the first place though.
