It's impossible to know how the VP selection went down. My personal theory is that Newt is such a media parasite that he inserted himself into the veep stakes and had free reign to fan those flames. The Trump campaign couldn't shut the speculation down because Gingrich is one of a handful of reliable surrogates. Newt didn't get VP but he got weeks of the spotlight which is all he cares about. No idea what Christie's whole deal is.
