The world is loving nuts, and here I am writing an update on a Friday night. Anyway, we've got Dagger so no more countdown timer but we still need to get the hell out of here. But not before we do more Mognet. What could Princess Garnet and Queen Brahne be thinking? Kupo! I don't understand how the royal family thinks... Yeah let's chill a bit first. Anyway the walk back up to Queen Brahne's bedroom is so uneventful I took no screenshots of it so let's skip to it. Why have you done this...!? I have devoted my whole life to serving you and the princess...! The truth has finally hit Steiner, and drat is it hitting him hard, so much so that even Zidane isn't giving him poo poo. Hell, this might be the first time he didn't call him "Rusty." Do you think she'll ever wake up? Of course. She's asleep because she's tired. That's all. FADE TO SILENCE Zidane doesn't even wait for a response. He's as emotionally spent as everyone else right now. Except Vivi, compared to the poo poo he's been through this is just a walk in the park. What happened to you? You are not your usual self. I can't... I can't even shed a tear... ...... There is no escape! Where have you been all this time? This is battle #3 with Beatrix. The deal is the exact same as the first two. If you don't deplete her HP, the battle will automatically end after a number of rounds. Same strategy as the others too, try to go for steals before the battle ends. She still hits like a truck but is still manageable enough. Geez, another one of these. Her Semi-Rare steal is the Survival Vest, important since it teaches Mug to Zidane (deal damage while stealing) as well as Antibody and Locomotion (prevents Stop, which as a reminder is essentially instant death in this game). I don't grab it because screw save-scumming for it. And oh hey, she ends yet another battle reducing everyone to single-digit HP! Though at least this time she uses one of Cloud's limit breaks. And for the second time in a row it triggers a worthless Trance. Holy crap Trance blows. ...Hey, wait a minute... You're the general of this kingdom. Isn't it to protect Dagger--your Princess Garnet? Princess... The queen really did mean to kill her... WHAT!? Steiner, it is time for you to accept the truth. All this time, I have been mistaken... I hate to say this, but the lady's right, Rusty. You'd better learn to accept it. ...But you can still save Dagger. Freya... I tell you this because I acknowledge your powers. I don't know if I can...but I will give it a try. Irrevocable is the spell we have cast! It is useless! Princess, are you alright? ...Ohh, my head... What happened...? So Dagger is back to normal, relatively speaking, and Beatrix is temporarily not kicking our asses. About time we caught a break. Have you extracted all the eidolons from her? We have, Your Majesty! Yes, Your Majesty! Oh? Are you defying me as well? Your Majesty, it is my duty to protect the princess. I beg you, reconsider. Please do not harm the princess anymore. You two are joining forces? How amusing... Mother! Don't worry. AWWWWW WHO'S A CUTE MUTANT CREEPDOG CERTAINLY NOT YOU YOU UGLY gently caress For this battle, we get control of Freya and BEATRIX. Yes, now WE are the rear end-kickers! Seiken is all the badass moves she used before on us. They're all pretty expensive MP-wise so despite being so drat cool it may not be the wisest idea to actually use them. Beatrix also has a good array of White Magic, including Holy. Honestly, the wisest thing to do is stick Beatrix with physical attacks and Cura. But if you must use Shock or Climhazzard, well, I'll forgive it just this once. These giant doomdogs are pretty fragile, one attack each from Beatrix and Freya will take it out. Girl Power! Speaking of girl power, now we can gear-up Dagger. I give her the Multina Racket so she can learn those abilities before later going to the Stardust Rod. And whatever armor I give her, there's too many drat abilities now for me to really keep track of all this. Act quickly to evade this guy. Dammit! Type C's...aren't really any different from Type B's. I don't even know if you fight any outside this one battle (if you do don't spoil it I want to be surprised). Apparently I mastered the Mage Staff so a quick detour to get Sleep before I start the Lightning Staff and then finally get caught up with all the Black Magic spells I'll never use until more come. Actually I use a good variety, Blizzara is great with Magus Hat boosting it, Bio's great in general, Drain is useful if Vivi is low on HP, and the status effects can be useful depending on the enemy. Zidane and company then have to fight two gleedogs, no biggie with four people. Especially since Blizzara is so sweet. What's the matter? Beatrix served the queen all these years, and now she is turning against her... Freya lost her comrades, yet she insists on protecting the princess... What? Why are you goin' formal all of a sudden? I want you to escort the princess out of Alexandria and take her to Doctor Tot. I'm sure Doctor Tot can come up with a plan to help us and our kingdom. Piece of cake. I'm an escape artist. Don't worry, Steiner. We'll get her there. Zidane, Master Vivi, I'm counting on you. It's kinda hard to notice with everything else going on, but if you look closely you can actually see Zidane and Steiner forming respect for each other. Steiner's stopped treating Zidane like a low-life, Zidane's actually calling Steiner by his real name. They irritate each other initially, but when poo poo gets real they have the same priorities and values. They both want to do what's right. Everybody is fighting for me... That's right. They're moving forward, giving everything they've got! So we have to move on, just like they are. We can't stop now! Uh Dagger there's a reason why we need to keep going what with all these weird mutantdogs chasing us constantly. Not that it matters since Vivi's a god drat busta who can one-shot these weenisdogs. What do you think!? It's not going to be easy... Now, you may think, oh, two barfdogs, no big deal, we've got loving Beatrix. This can actually be tricky since they can gang up on one member, especially since they can lick people to Sleep. This is why you want to actually preserve MP for Cura rather than spam Seiken Densetsu moves with Beatrix's miserable MP pool. This fight was a bit tough due to getting sleep-locked but the duo pull it off in impressive fashion. Beatrix! Freya! Grant me the honor of assisting you brave knights! We fight two more dogdogs but we've got one more body to get licked to slumbertime so it's easier. Also here's Beatrix flipping her hair for her victory pose because she'd rather look glamorous than keep her hair out of her one good eye. Not that I can blame her, if you're as drat powerful as Beatrix you might as well look good kicking rear end. Anyway, that's gonna be the last we see of Beatrix and company for awhile. For now, we'll focus on Zidane, Dagger, and Vivi. And moogle mail, the most important of sidequests. Really stupid, they are! To be fair, only Dagger knew about the trap and she probably didn't expect to be caught again plus she's kinda distracted but whatever. Bastards, we may be, but clever are we. Hee-hee-heee. Blank! ----- We've gotta hurry! Zidane and Dagger are in trouble! Who's Dagger? Zidane's new girl? What? You don't know? Know what? What are you talking about? ----- Man, I love you guys! Blank... Marcus... Get out of here! We'll take care of this! There's more bad guys coming! I owe you guys big-time! FADE TO SILENCE Dagger? Are you alright? ...... Forget I asked. I'm sure you have a lot on your mind... ...We're riding this thing? Yeah. Let's get going. We have no time to waste. I...I don't know what to do anymore... Yeah, they're fighting for you, but also, they know, deep down inside, that they have to fight! Sometimes, you can't think everything out. You have to listen to your heart. Another classic We're going to Treno. We'll stay there for the time being and try to figure out our next move. ...... That's- I think this one's different from the one I ran into! Be careful! This is Ralvuimago, not Ralvurahva like the previous iteration that simply ran away. I don't know whether it's an evolved form of the previous monster or something completely different or whatever the hell. It has physical attacks, it can cast Thundara, it can even inflict Mini. However, this thing can be trivialized simply by using physical attacks. It'll counter physical attacks by coiling up. This boosts its defense, and further attacks will result in an earth-based counterattack. Float nullifies it, or you could simply not attack it during this phase. More importantly, it won't initiate attacks in this phase either. It also won't counter non-damage attacks, so you can debuff it and steal from it with impunity, making stealing from this boss pretty convenient compared to the last three Beatrix battles. It's vulnerable to Blind and Slow in case you want to use those on it. As for steals, the Semi-Rare is the Oak Staff, which would be a huge get if we didn't get one from a Chocograph back at Disc 1. The Uncommon Steal is new though, an Adaman Vest that halves Fire damage and teaches Bird Killer and Stone Killer. It's not a bad get. Once I get it two Blizzaras from a Focus-spamming Vivi obliterate this thing and its ice weakness. Hey, hurry up! Don't yell at it. The poor thing must be scared to death. But it's... No, Zidane! Look! ARE YOU KIDDING ME. We'll pass Treno if we don't stop soon! Dammit! We can't jump off at this speed. Huh? What the... Shoot!!! ----- Let us through! I have strict orders from the queen not to let either of you through. I shall make any inquiries on your behalf. The queen's guests have arrived. Let them come in, shall we? I shall inquire. Stay here. What does that mean? Queen Brahne is quite upset with you two for letting the princess escape with the pendant. SILENCE We cannot live without the queen's backing! We must first tell the guests to come in! Here's the first of the two guests. Out of my way! The queen summoned me. Restrain yourself before the queen. Lani was the one in Lindblum who stayed at the inn and complained about the moogle. I think she was also in the Festival of the Hunt. I hear things aren't going too well. Have you no manners? This is what I get for hiring a lowlife. I'm sure you didn't hire me for my manners, Your Majesty. Hmph. The first is to retrieve the pendant, a national treasure, from Princess Garnet. A soulless golem. A defect is running free. I don't know what happened between you and the princess, but what should I do if I meet with resistance? Hmph. Good day, Your Majesty. Yes, that accursed monkey! I shall give you an extra reward if you take care of him. ...I was right. I'll take care of your request after I finish him. Ah, finally! We leave immediately! As I recall, Lani and Scarlet Hair are both in the Festival of the Hunt. Also, yay, another forced loss against Beatrix. I mean, was it really necessary? MachuPikacchu posted:It's been a while, can someone please remind me why Stop is a death sentence in this game? Stop doesn't wear off like in other games, so if a character or monster is hit with Stop the game pretty much considers them "dead", much like petrification (though Stop wears off after battle).

According to the official strategy guide (which is on a shelf right next to my desk and quicker than looking at GameFAQs) you can cure Stop with either Dispel or a Remedy. While Beatrix does have a pretty small MP pool, she has enough to throw out some climhazzards and a stock break/holy. Considering you only fight three battles with her and a climhazzard should one-shot the doggies there's no reason not to use her Seiken abilities and have Freya clean up. Shock is totally a trap though.

I really don't like how this whole scene deals with Beatrix. Don't get me wrong, her personality, struggles, and story are all great, but this scene was just the most poorly-done part of her arc. Yet again, we're thrown into an unwinnable fight to show off how supremely badass she is, and then, when she was a mere instant away from turning from Misguided-But-Loyal Warrior to Irredeemable Villain, she INSTANTLY jumps ship and switches over to the good guys, because she's also unmistakably HEROIC in addition to unbeatable. Oh, and of COURSE she ends up saving Dagger's life with sheer white magic power (don't Paladins usually have lovely magical abilities?) overcoming a magical curse that shouldn't have been able to be removed. Honestly, she's portrayed as a person so perfectly badass that one might think of her as proto-Lightning. I wonder if Toriyama was involved in FFIX? One thing I really like about the bounty hunter scene is how Scarlet Hair there handles his guard. While Lani is stopped and argues (loudly and arrogantly) with the guard, the other guard tries to stop SH, and he responds by simply shouldering her aside and walking over to Brahne like the guard wasn't even there. It just perfectly conveys a sense of do-not-give-a-gently caress about anything he considers beneath him. Bufuman fucked around with this message at 04:22 on Jul 16, 2016 |

This is hands down one of the best moments of the game. Beatrix swapping sides, Steiner becomes more serious (although he's still hilarious) and his bromance with Zidane kicks off, and there's all around a ton of awesome things going on. And there's a great pitfall that a lot of games fall into at moments like this that this game dodges. In many games, during a situation that Freya and Beatrix find themselves in, the fights are either obscenely hard or piss easy. Here, the Bandersnatches are enough of a threat that you need to stay alert, but not enough of one that there's much danger of having to go through the previous scenes. And man, I'd kill for some way to see what Steiner, Freya, and Beatrix go through between now and the next time we see them, even if it ended up being some kind of gauntlet. Steiner and Beatrix bounce off each other really well and I wish they'd get more interaction. Plus, Freya pretty much falls off the face of Gaia at this point so I'd like to see more of her.

I think the moment would have worked better if Beatrix knew about what was going on and had to work with her own self-doubt during the 3rd match. Instead of an immediate change.

This Let's Play has been very great and I'm so glad it's returned. There's been something I've been curious about though. Some of you may know the mobile game Final Fantasy Record Keeper, where content from all the games is mashed together into one big 2D Final Fantasy battle-fest. It mostly draws from FF6's style. Of course, FF9 has a lot of attention in the game, and I was wondering if you guys would be interested in seeing 2D sprites from the game for bosses or enemies that Mega64 comes across as we get to them? This might be a totally self-indulgent request and I apologize if so, but it's better to just ask and see what the reaction is, I think. So let me know!

CHAPTER NINE: Gitan was explore for clues in old tree. Time to rock and roll, his thoughtedhead brightened him. Gargan Roo is only a problem at level 1 if I somehow linger in a screen long enough to get caught in a random encounter. Or if I get unlucky. But I didn't! Bye Treno. Raluvavulva or whatever is no big deal as it can hit only one person at a time. Tinhank blood swords at it. Back to Gitan's wacky crew of minorities. Gitan getting naked last disc is rewared with new clothing teleporting to his location this disc. Ah, my friend, how I missed you. What do you call the wierd guitar moves done for this area's music? The Great Chalice of Hope in SMT4 also does it. Anyway it's Fleeing and gathering treasures and not collecting 7-direction golems for my Battle City Tournament deck. There is only one encounter that matters, the ol' Double Carrion Worm. Like the axebeaks, Quark eats one. Then like the axebeaks, fleeing so we keep the magic but not the experience. I am not good at button mashing, so these are annoying. Zuus are actually larger than the stop graphic so that it's still flapping is kind of a sign this didn't work. After the weird and funky trunk theme a simple flute tune can go screw itself. I buy entirely too much stuff. This is the last store before the hardest part of the game. I need to prepare. I go snaggle the silk robe for fun. Quark dies along the way. We leave them for the jackals so that Gitan may live. LOL JK I was trying to set up another Limit Glove. MAULED BY AN ANTLION: A LOCAL SLAVEHOLDER TELLS HIS TALE Unfortunately there's an invisible free heal before Antlion. Sandstorm inflicts blind and reduces HP to single digits. But not to 1 for Quark because ugh why does playing the game in comically unintended ways have to be so difficult. Quark shows off their fancy-new Auto-Life. They do not have a halo because blind's graphic takes precedence. Papito casts Bio some. It doesn't matter. Just about 1k damage. Sandstorm sets HP to a random single digit, so in this case it increased Ratchel's HP by 3. The Antlion is not exactly hasty about killing the party. poo poo, I'm not exactly hasty! Finally, Quark bites it. Auto-Life revives them. At 1 HP. The exact amount for Limit Glo Oh gently caress you. TRY TWO: Balls. EFFORT THE THIRD: Get bent loser. And then the sandstorm ritual fails as Ratchel is level 1 and too weak to riverdance. It's more of a gullydance. Next time: the invasion of Cleyra that Mega64 skimmed over is actually kinda ridiculous when you can't kill anyone. REGISTER OF RESETS: One to Tidal Flame Garnet for the hell of it; Unknown number lost to plant spiders spawn numbers; died to Flans without Flee; Untimely crit pushed Sealion to fatally Blizzara; less work to suicide on optional Type A fight than to win or reset; incredible number of resets for phoenix down RNG; and then again; Marcus gained levels; Snared by the Mandragoras leaving Quan's Dwelling; Only one on a pointless phoenix down rng; Antlion did not cooperate; Again, Antlion did not cooperate.

Here's the rest of the sprites. Didn't turn out to be that many after all! CHAPTER 13 Black Waltz No. 2. I like that "put Dagger to sleep" lose condition this guy does. It's a very FF9 thing to do. CHAPTER 14 Black Waltz No. 3. Technically this sprite and battle aren't for this part of the game in Record Keeper, but for the one at South Gate later, but I'll put it here since it'd be the same anyway. CHAPTER 19 There's no boss battle with Zaghnol in Record Keeper, so we'll have to skip ahead a bit. To make up for it, look at this. CHAPTER 23 Gizamaluk(e) of the famed grotto. I remember only killing this guy with a Trance Freya jump assault. Took a while. CHAPTER 26 Beatrix, everyone's favorite priss! Actually, she's probably my favorite woman in all of Final Fantasy. CHAPTER 31 Ralvurahva, compact as all get-out. CHAPTER 33 Antlion, who honestly does just look like a slightly redesigned version of the one from FF4. CHAPTER 36 Ralvuimago, and I'm not exactly sure what's going on here. And that covers everything we've seen thus far, sort of. I'll be here to provide sprites with new bosses as we get to them. Thanks for putting up with me!
