Talk about damning with faint praise. Someone is going to sign that kid to a too-long, too-rich contract in a few years and it's going to end horribly for them.

(I never miss a chance to poo poo on Cam Fowler and only hope that he continues to use his mysticism to make the Ducks fans think he is a benefit to their team)

OK. Again, I have two guys I want and have fallen to me, it's just a matter of who I think is more likely to get taken between now and my other pick (8 spots). Here goes nothing.

Winnipeg selects Alexander Steen. He puts up terrific numbers and fancies every year and is probably the best established offensive player available (maybe one other dude but salary is meh). I'm glad he fell to me! The Jets:

Parise-Bergeron-Simmonds
Steen-Kadri

Doughty-Hamonic

Nov 2, 2006

I'm not a huge fan of how old my offensive core is, but it's not like Bergeron/Parise/Steen aren't all gonna be really good for a while, so I don't mind. When they fell to me, I felt they were BPA on forwards. Actually, there's one dude I'm thinking of who I possibly could have picked who's younger but I like Steen better anyway.

Probably yes, and he can't play a full season, either. But he's an offensive machine when he's healthy and plays heavy minutes. He's a UFA after next year and I'd hope to re-sign him. He gives me a pretty sweet second line in-the-making with Kadri.

I have a team full of kids so I'm giving them a dad to watch over them. The Hurricanes take 6'9 Zdeno Chara. He's going to reunite with his little buddy Dougie and help anchor my top pair for the next two years until the rest of the D is really up to the task.

Chara is 39, yes, but he's still able to play heavy minutes and do ok with possession and scoring, and he's got one of those weird contracts where the AAV drops in his over 40 season (to 4 million). If he wants to keep playing (I think Chara will end up challenging Chelios for oldest D) we can even look at keeping him around after this contract is up.

The downside is he has a NMC and you'd need to protect him in expansion.

I don't know if anyone else is keeping expansion in mind, but it's affected my choices to a small degree.

Also figured I should actually write my pick in here. The Predators selected Paul Stastny as a playmaking center with a big contract that's luckily only good for two more years when he's 32. He has trouble staying healthy but when he is he's a fantastic playmaker, maybe at the cost of being a goal scorer. It also allows me to either move Nylander down to the third line or switch him to wing depending who I get for the top two right wing positions.

I think the odds are better that Connor starts in the AHL, unless he has an exceptional preseason. There's a ton of competition among wingers this year.

The Real Talk:

Connor and Provorov are about as close to sure bets as you can get prospect wise outside of Matthews/Laine imo, and both should make their respective teams this fall. I don't think you'll find better value on a ELC outside of maybe one other guy who plays a position I didn't really need.

strongly disagree. i think he probably develops well but he's got a long way to go before he's anywhere near troch, who in 15-16 had a very positive impact when he was on the ice in goals for/goals against/shots for/shots against, and rask was a negative on the ice for all of those things except goals for

Adam Larsson is T-Bone's favourite Devil and for good reason. He's big like giraffe, strong like ox, skate like wind, shoot like cannon, and start in defensive zone like rented mule. At least half of those things must be true or else hfboards morons wouldn't post about how underrated he is and how much they regret having to trade him to get one of the top young wingers in the game. He might play in one of the other two zones this season and bank some pucks off McDavid's shin and then you'll see.

Could be with Laine, although I think he makes his way up very quickly in any case. Actually those two are the best winger prospects in the NHL, loving Jets man.

There were some vets I really wanted to take, but yeah I figured he would go soon with how youth has been drafted. Hextall has been freaking me out a little a bit though saying he might go back to Juniors again.

Eh gently caress it most of my other center options are awful and will keep dropping.

Who needs offense? We're going to aim for shutout shootout losses.

Let's double down on what I think is a real strong top 4 and select 6'4 Jay Bouwmeester. His possession numbers and rate stats aren't great but he's far and away the best left d still on the board for me, and he was a top pairing guy of a team that went to the conference finals so he must have something left.

Laine - Bjugstad - Gallagher

Chara - Hamilton
Bouwmeester - Ristolainen

He's really quite bad, it's absurd how little offensive upside he has considering he went 4th overall. Use him as a PK specialist and you'll be fine
