The last job I worked for had absolutely no idea what health code or OSHA was. They kept unknown cleaning chemicals capable of causing burns in random unrelated containers, had absolutely no PPE available, used aerosols near food prep stations, and left samples made with mayo out for 8+ hours. In retrospect I should have sent the full wrath of safety administrations after them

Every place I've worked for has thrown massive, unending shitfits over fines as low as two digits, so it might actually work even if it is kind of laughable. Then again, every place I've worked has essentially used me as a night janitor to cover for deficiencies in their daytime cleaning routines and then got pissed at me for the overtime they scheduled me for. Que sera sera.

Depending on the source of operations insurance (if not diligence in actually getting it lol), its possible to get hit enough in the bottom line due to citations to drive some safety programs. The bad part is fines are a huge boon in the operating budget of agencies so you're paying insurance fat cats instead of building sustainable agency driven programs.

The problem is that a lot of roads and bridges were built prior to that standard being established and it's too expensive or difficult to redesign and rebuild them to fit. Not to mention that railroads own a lot of those bridges, and railroads are the stingiest corporations on the planet

We found one of these contraptions rigged up in the attic of my fraternity house. Apparently, someone put it together in the early 2000's, decided it was unsafe, and just left it there with a sticky note that said 'no' on it. Then come 2007 or so iirc, someone found it, saw the sticky note, ignored it, and tried to chop down a tree branch with it. Predictably the blade bounced, and he sliced open his upper arm to the bone and he nearly died. Of course, the response wasn't to get rid of the thing, instead they attached a sticky note which said 'NO, gently caress NO' to it, and left it for the next person to find, which sat until 2012 or so when someone finally took it apart if memory serves correctly.

Do you ever get a pic where you aren't sure if it should go in this thread or the Schadenfreude one? The reason these fire fighters are spraying water on the money transport van is because the driver managed to get himself locked up inside the secured part of the van. It's a hot day and that part has no ventilation whatsoever, so they're trying to keep it cool. The company brought a spare key to get the guy out in time. He's doing "reasonably well, considering the circumstances". The company won't say how he could lock himself up, because of security reasons. Also, I have no idea why the guy with the hose seems to be wearing just a shirt, instead of the fire fighting uniform. E: the guys to the left dressed like bees are cops. Carbon dioxide posted:Do you ever get a pic where you aren't sure if it should go in this thread or the Schadenfreude one? I presume that is the firefighting uniform, i.e. the thing they normally wear sans protective gear. As far as I know, the actual protective gear is something you can put over other things, which means you'd usually have t-shirt etc. underneath. If it's a hot day and obviously a non-dangerous situation (at least for him), why bake in the sun unnecessarily?

I worked for the British Columbia Ministry of Environment in the 90's and was told the story of a conservation officer who did the same thing, except in a bear trap with a tranquillized bear inside it. The trap is basically an overturned barrel with a cage door at one end that is spring loaded and set to go off when a bucket of food is touched, like this: The officer successfully trapped and tranquillized the bear, but when he entered the trap to tag the animal he forgot to dummy lock the door and it slammed shut on him. Knowing that it would be 4 to 6 hours before someone came looking for him and 15 to 20 minutes before the bear woke up, he was forced to slit the bear's throat with his pen knife and wait for rescue.
