I just reached HR2 and I'm still wearing the Tetsucabra set, so I'm wondering if there are any good upgrades from that? I've tried searching and most people seem to agree to go for the bujabujabu set, but surely that's not what I should be wearing for the whole of LR?

EDIT: Technically it may have been updated for Gen?

Give it a whirl.

You'll be fine with buja for all of LR. Maybe blow a few armor spheres to increase armor when you hit the first level of HR but otherwise you're good.

The problem will be the first level of high rank since most HR armor requires gathering in areas that aren't available in that level. HR 5 is when you'll get access to enough gathering points to build out a high rank set

Ceanataur is razor sharp and 13 points of expert with two slots so you can bump to 15.

Yes you can wear buja all of LR because atk L is a very good skill in its own right, better than expert typically.

Completed the Fated Four - it was much easier than the MH4U final low village quest but still fun. Used the buja set and didn't really get into any major troubles. Glad Glavenus was last though, it was by far the hardest / most annoying.

Aerial DBS are major fun - I loved DBS before but aerial style makes fighting the flying monsters a good time.

This. I'm just making and upgrading every LS I have the mats for, and swapping between them for fashion/element matching. So far, my favorites are the Yukumo Blade, The Eager Cleaver, and Black Katana Mk.1. I also have a Rimeblossom kicking around for appropriate monsters. I'm planning to make Coiled Nail soon, which will be kinda hard to fashion hunt with, but is also a decent amount of sharpness with Paralysis status.

Depends. Do you prefer super fantasy weapons with tons of spikes and glowy bits? They'll be somewhat difficult to come by until late game. But this is easier to match if you either don't mind, or else also prefer things that look like the monster from which they are crafted.

If so, then things like Hidden Saber (Nargacuga line), Tigrine Edge (Tigrex line), maybe Dios Katana/Demolition Katana (Brachadios line), or Dancing Flames (Agnaktor Line. Is Agnaktor even a monster to hunt in this game? e: just checked. It is. Cool. Always liked that hunt). Then you have weird poo poo liek Reaver "Cruelty" (Devil Jho) which is this hosed up meaty jaw bone chained up on a stick.

Alternatively, maybe you prefer things simple. There are plenty of "just Katanas". Things like Eager Clever, Rimeblossom/Yuki Ichimonji are "just" Katanas.

If you want some straight swords, your options are pretty limited. Guardian and Aqua Guardian are pretty rad looking hugefuck double-edge swords. They're almost large enough to satisfy the fantasy deal, but otherwise pretty simple in their design. Rusty Claymore also works. And La Justiciere (Shagaru Magala) fits the fantasy angle even better.

If you want Longswords, that aren't technically swords you even have some options depending on what you think is cool. Garuga, and Rajang have Polearms. and Kakaru Kumo Naki is like some sort of hosed up bone poleaxe which some people might like (me. I think it looks loving sweet).

For novelty, Chain Slaughter is literally a giant chain saw, complete with buzzsaw sounds. Else, Hairtail's Hairblade, which is literally just like an eel impaled on a long stick.

For Longswords your options are mostly limited to curved swords, but given every weapon can technically be upgraded to end-game viable you're totally at liberty to pick whatever fits your interests best. Unfortunately, Kiranico dropped all of the weapon images when it updated for MHGenerations, so if you want to take a look at things yourself I believe your only particular option right now is to download Ping's MHX dex. Else you have to compare with weapons from earlier in the series of the same/similar names, and won't do anything for the new weapons.

Have you heard of Fermat's principle?
Just want to make sure I'm not misunderstanding something about the weapon: can someone sell me on using heavy bowguns? At the moment it's difficult for me to understand the allure of them over light bowguns and bows.

I can't find the information anywhere, but I'm assuming that heavy bowguns have an innate damage multiplier that is higher than light bowguns. If so, how considerable is the difference?

What is the benefit of having siege/crouching fire? At best it seems to fire rounds faster in a long sequence of sustained fire, but I can rarely get in a situation where you can fire more shots than you would by just firing plainly. Is there a special buff the bullets get that I'm not seeing? Compare that to rapid fire for light bowguns, which fires a similarly quick barrage for more damage and saves ammo without having to commit as heavily. I guess maybe it's a difference between burst/sustained damage playstyles?

Having the shield on a heavy bowgun is an interesting mechanic, but it doesn't block very well, is unreliable, and one could say that the mobility of the light bowgun allows you to never end up in a situation where you would need it. So again, hard to justify the bulkiness of the gun.

I can see the hunting arts for the heavy bowgun being cooler (hello anime nuke shot) but I'm hoping that's not the only positive (and perhaps I'm wrong and they aren't even that good).

Anyway, it just seems like a rather awkward and slow gun that I'm either a) not seeing the invisible benefits of it or b) it's situational and I should only use it on certain monsters or in party play or etc. If it helps, I was using adept style to dodge, perhaps this is the wrong style to use?

Siege Mode lets you fire quickly without reloading, or reloading a lot less often. It's useful because you'll sometimes have cases where you have a siege ammo that only has a magazine size of 1 or 2 in standing mode. HBG really shines now in Adept and Aerial styles. Adept gets a special instant reload and damage buff after an Adept Dodge, that can optionally go straight into siege mode, and also has the ability to roll directly out of siege mode. Aerial reloads when you vault, and lets you either do an aerial slam or aerial shot. If the ammo you have loaded is also a siege ammo, your aerial shot will be rapid fire. It's great for status ammo. And yeah, anime nuke shot is pretty good once you figure out how to properly aim it.

Rapid fire does 70% damage with each shot
Siege fire does 100% and fires insanely fast

Adept is the correct style, it gives you the safety of LBG

Gunpowder infusion is the "best" skill because it's free damage

someone did the math for 4u (gen is unchanged mechanics other than arts and built in shots)
https://www.reddit.com/r/MonsterHunter/comments/33knht/lbg_and_hbg_damage_differences/

LBG and HBG do similar damage but HBG is generally higher dps because you don't miss rapid fire shots and the calculation doesn't factor in siege mode.

Set a trap + go into siege mode with pierce = the monster is going to die. HBG is "tougher" solo and really shines multiplayer where other people will be knocking the monster down and keeping it distracted. Online I would go so far as to say HBG is the better option in almost every case.

For Melee weapons, is Aerial everything the best style? It seems to provide so much over everything else. The monsters can rarely hit you while you are flailing through the air smashing them on your way down, you typically don't lost THAT many moves for the various weapons. I guess the only thing you lose are the additional hunter arts, but I seemingly forget to use those anyways so I don't miss out on much.

I keep trying to go back to Striker SnS but keep feeling like I'd be better off mounting monsters and then stunning them while they are on the ground. What am I doing wrong in the other styles that makes Aerial feel so strong?

if you're playing solo yeah aerial is great, mounting is a ton of free damage. If you're in a party it's generally good to have only one person aerial because of the increase damage required to mount each time you do it. Plus I think maybe you can hit the other person midair?

LS is a weapon with good hunter arts that guild or striker is good for, SnS is another one.

It's a trade-off. It means that your damage will suffer during the "everybody go nuts on the monster after it fell over" part of the mounting. Longsword loses its spirit slashes, for example, which are normally its most damaging attacks. You basically lose the ability to use your heaviest attacks with the same precision you could have gotten from the ground.
