ISSTH always goes in cycles between fights and swindles. All the fighting we've got now is just preparation for going MAXIMUM OVERSWINDLE.

Meng Hao's finally made it to the Eastern Lands! :toot:

I'm kind of going to miss the clearly-delineated stages on the path to immortality. Sure, there's still going to be power levels based on how many meridians you've opened, but that's not quite the same as "Alright, you've cultivated an internal lake of qi, now you need to refine that into pillars, which you are then going to break down into a Core, and from that you'll refine your Nascent Soul--once you've done that, you're finally ready to start setting up your Severings".

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but Meng Hao's basically already succeeded at Dao Seeking, right? That was the whole big deal with that projection of himself--he's found his own personal Dao. He still has a lot of preparation to be ready for Immortal Ascension, but he's at least guaranteed that he'll be going for true Ascension.

Man, I am having the hardest time staying interested in the current My Disciple Died Yet Again arc. It's a nearly complete reset: it takes place in a different world with nearly no relation to the first one, all but two members of the existing cast have been left behind, power levels are starting from scratch, and the bug investigation is starting from scratch. The protagonist isn't doing anything proactive, just reacting to the situation around her as it unfolds, and there's enough different things going on that it's hard to really care. The jokes are getting really stale, too.

Is anyone far enough ahead on the raws to let me know if it swings back around? I can just binge read it in a few weeks.

jwang

Yeah, the rock stage is probably the weakest arc of the whole story, mostly because she could do mostly all of diddly and squat. The next major arc gets better though, with a hint what is the true issues involved in this world and things getting slightly more serious (or at least as serious as the third reincarnation arc). I forget the specifics of the next couple of arcs, but the gist of it is mostly her going into a lower ranked world to deal with the root of the problems involved with cultivation. Problems in the upper world is more of interpersonal issues than stomping bugs.

The gags about female self-image, animal attraction, and lightning rods will continue though.

I finally got around to reading all of Mushoku Tensei, and it was really drat good. Like, it had plenty of major problems, the loving perverted main character and the straightfaced harem ranking pretty highly there, but I am such a sucker for stories where the protag ends up in a loving relationship with a family. One of the final chapters, where he's surrounded by his family as he peacefully passes away at 74, then in the afterlife tells the god he's been fighting against for most of the story "I'm not angry at you anymore, I had a good life, peace out" was beautiful.

It's just something I rarely see in light/web novels. Shonen is all about fighting/competition, shojo is all about how pretty and romantic the boys and girls are, xianxia and wuxia are lucky to even have a loving love interest or anything beyond "gaining immortality and punching god in the face". I just really, really like scenes like the main character returning from a stressful situation, to his loving family, and reaffirming how much he truly cares about them. MT had some of the best scenes like that, it really made up for a lot of flaws.

I never understood the point of a slave character in these stories. I mean, in the non-adult/18+ stories. It's like, the authors are planning their stories and are secretly excited by the possible fetish material and then chicken out and it never comes up again. Not that I'm complaining as the slave rape thing is disturbing (to put it mildly) but it's like creating a character that shits gold when they eat a certain food and then never having them encounter that food. Why bother?

What do you mean, chicken out? There are plenty of web novels where the protagonists make sweet rapey love with their new purchases. Er. It's also often used as a very fast and logical way for the hero to gather a party willing to travel around a fantasy world with him without having to first establish trust and whatever for fifty chapters. Helps move the story along, I guess. Plus you can treat them super nice as the only non-racist and noble-hearted man they've ever met, which means they'll instantly fall in love with you if you set them free. You don't even need to be handsome!

Eh, I don't like Mushoku Tensei at all. Stuff like that Shield Hero or Arifureta WN are also rated highly but are really terrible. Heck, some novel with "Slave Harem" in the title is #5 on the list darkgray linked. The best thing I can say about Mushoku Tensei is that it seems to do a somewhat better job of employing most of the tropes you tend to see in the "reincarnated as an awesome dude who is really powerful and surrounded by beautiful women who all love him" genre. Generally speaking, due to the targeted audience, I find reader ratings/views to be a very poor measure of the quality of WNs.

I'm not even against wish fulfillment in stories, but once it becomes too blatant I find them impossible to enjoy. It's like there's no limit to how much wish fulfillment some readers want in these stories. I understand the appeal of a story where, for example, a pretty girl is in love with the main character. I even understand when there might be two or three girls; the variety and element of "who will he choose" can be interesting. But once you end up with like 5+ girls interested in the main character it gets kinda ridiculous. The same goes for powerful characters. It can be fun to have a character with some unique, powerful ability that other characters do not have. But most of these WNs seem to just keep handing the main character one ridiculous power after another, until the result of most conflicts seems like a foregone conclusion. An overpowered character can be okay in some situations (the obvious example being something like One Punch Man where the main character's fights aren't the focus of the series), but these WNs are generally explicitly about the growth of the main character as he continues to defeat enemies and attract beautiful women.

The reason I was able to stomach it in MT was because of the family stuff. I mean, it gets pretty loving blatant, like with the incredibly stupid dues ex machina of The main character's older self teleporting in from the future with a diary that explains the plot and tells him how to get magic swole, but then dies off immediately and never really becomes majorly plot relevant ever again.. There's absolutely no tension in the fights, it's like reading a pretend fight between two kids "Nuh-uh, because I block and immediately..." Hell, by the last few chapters they have the dude who can defeat god on their side and willing to fight, and the only reason they're not just letting him annihilate everything is because the main character feels indebted to him and doesn't want him to have to waste any power. All the tension from the story comes from the fact that the main character is only one man, and the opponent is actively targeting his family. It is kind of a let-down that after the holy beast is summoned his family never actually gets attacked again, and if the story ran long enough after that I could see the premise wearing thin, but for the final few chapters I thought it worked perfectly.

And to go with that, I loved the fact that the story admitted that the main character is actually superfluous at that point. Once his kids are born, his role in the story is basically over. The only reason he's a threat to the bad guy is because his family is gonna gently caress that dude up in 100 years. So the entire point of the novel after that is to protect his family as best he can. He never bitches about it, he sacrifices pretty freely as long as it's for their sake, he embodies what it means to be a dad. You don't see any "dad" main characters, and I really like the fact that the story kind of lampshaded the main character's lovely aspects by having them mirror those of his actual dad. It's a really great scene when main dude sits down, thinks about it, and realizes that he has become his father, and the guy that he never really respected actually was pretty loving stand-up all things considered. Those are some incredible loving beats to see in a story about an invincible reincarnated magician touring the world and building a goddamn harem. The story is far from perfect, but what it gets right it gets so right.
